It's pretty obvious by now. Our codex spells it out in all but name, the HH series has consistently hinted at a future purpose for the Errants other than just collecting more of themselves. 

 

If you read 'Pandorax', Epithemeus basically tells us the whole story. We're not aware of who all of the founding 8 Grandmasters were, but the basic process is;

 

- Sigilite collects a bunch of Astartes, psykers and non-psykers alike, to be the genesis of a final Chapter of daemonhunters. These are the Knights Errant

- Presents the eight to the Emperor, he approves

- The eight journey to Titan, Titan disappears into the warp

- During their time on Titan, they have their original gene-seed removed and the Emperor's gene-seed implanted (this either enhances their existing psychic powers, or grants the non-psychic Errants psychic abilities directly from the Emperor)

- The eight train the entire original Chapter

- When Titan re-emerges from the warp, the Horus Heresy is over but their work has only just begun

 

Epithemeus managed to hibernate for nearly 10,000 years, so it would seem Knights (if not by extension all Astartes) are functionally immortal, barring death in combat. It's not clear if he's aware the Lion is still alive, but he definitely is aware of his former Legion's history and his awkward placement in history (he was loyal to Luther, but ultimately left all that behind for the Grey Knights). Hence why he studiously avoids all contact with Imperial forces, as the Dark Angels probably want to reclaim him (as would the Grey Knights).
