rjpstoked
I did search and didn't find anything, Would anyone share their thoughts on ink products used today. I used them a lot 20 years ago, and since my resurgence into painting, I am confused to who sells them (I used citadel inks), and the differences between them, washes, and glazes. Lastly, who sells the inks you prefer. Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284571-current-inks-products-thoughts/ Share on other sites
Surrender_Monkey
I am fairly sure Coat d'Arms is literally the same stuff as the citadel paints in the 90s, GW used to buy them from that company and rebadge them, so it you're looking to match an old colour they're probably your best bet. Someone else can probably elaborate further, but I think the primary difference between and ink and a wash is pigment, ink has more pigment so has a stronger colour vs the more subtle washes. A glaze is a super thin wash that merely gives a "tint" of a colour rather than actually covering the colour beneath. Lucien Eilam
All three use transparent pigments. The real difference with Shades and Glazes are the media they use, not the pigment. Inks are very prone to leaving tide marks as they dry, and don't flow as easily as the Shades. Shades use a base that encourages them to run off the surface and into recesses. Glazes use a more paint-like base, so they cover the surface evenly and modify the underlying colour. They're both much less likely to leave tide marks than ink, but will if you absolutely flood an area, so it's still better to use multiple thin coats than one thick one. You could get similar effects with ink mixed with different artists' media, but mixing them well is a skill to acquire. The advantage of Shades and Glazes (and similar products from competitors) is that they work consistently straight from the pot. Hemal
Agree with the statement above, i always use inks diluted with acrylic matte medium, though I have yet to try using with lahmian medium which seems to be a pretty cool mixer for most of my paints (I may never use water again!!)
