New to IG, looking to start Steel Legion

Well, I have a decent size army of Black Templar, and I want to venture out in to the Imperial Guard. Id like to stick to one theater of war, so Armageddon makes sence, since Templars and Steel Legion fought there.

With that being said, I would like to build a fluff Steel Legion army. I know manticores are pretty awesome, and the same with vandettas, but I am looking to build the army for fun games. So I am thinking of getting at least 6 Chimeras, and Vet squads to fill them up. As Steel Legion is mostly mechnized, i would like to know what other vehicles I should look in to.

What variant of russ should i be getting for them?

What type of artillary? (I am thinking the Basilisk, armageddon pattern).

What should i use for fast attack?

Any other advice would be great!

Well, for artillery I'd suggest basilisks and/or medusas, seeing as I know FW makes kits for both of those in Armageddon-patterns.

Fast attack, I'd suggest hellhounds and sentinels, I remember reading a Templar book that took place on Armageddon, and some resourceful Steel Legion members replaced a missing assault cannon from a Templar dreadnought with a Sentinel multilaser from one of their downed ones.

For Russes, I really wouldn't know. Personally I prefer the Punisher for its high volume of fire, but others will suggest others that are better. What are you looking for in a Russ? Anti-infantry, all-rounder, or anti-tank?

Welcome to the Guard soldier! The Steel Legion are a good army, will you be collecting the metal models? There's a chance the new codex strongly rumoured for early next year will come with new Steel Legion models, so it would be prudent to hold off on infantry until we know what's coming. Fortunately as the Steel Legion are heavily mechanised this means you can concentrate on your armour while you wait smile.png

The Steel Legion should be mechanised as their name suggests, but this doesn't mean you can't fight on foot and have the Chimeras roll in support. I'd recommend taking at least one Platoon to give you more bodies for cheaper. As for what to take the good news is that aside from heavily featuring mounted infantry the Legion aren't really tied to anything in particular so you have free reign to do pretty much what you like.

Of course, this should involve lots of tanks ideally tongue.png Making good use of artillery and Fast Attack elements would fit the theme well, some Hellhound variants and Sentinels would be great to run with your Chimera squads. The Sentinel apoc formation isn't about the Steel Legion's Titan hunting Sentinels for nothing biggrin.png

For Russes maybe some Demolishers to close in with your attacking elements? Exterminators could be handy too as your artillery will be throwing enough pie plates around and the Eradicator is one of my favourite tanks thanks to how good it is at clearing objectives out.

I really dont know what I am thinking about for Russ tanks. I am thinking that with the number of Orks on Armageddon, they had a lot of anit-troop fire power. But I also think I need something to pop armor. Unless I leave that up to the Basilisks/Medusas.

I have read that book as well with the Dread who uses a multi-laser. It was a great story.

I know they mention that a HQ Russ for Steel Legion is an excuitioner. So I may have 1 of those, and maybe another dakka one.

I will have to check in to the sentinels, and see what I can run with them. I may lean toward the hellhound veriants, just because it may be more fluffy. I am not sure if Armageddon produced Sentinels.

Edit: Thanks for the advice!

As for troop models I will be using DkoK for all of my troopers. Yes.... expensive, but cool looking. If new models come out for Steel Legion, I may look in to them.

With the new Dex on the horizon... I am not sure if this is the best time to start building or not. Just want to brain storm some ideas, and see how much I need to invest to get a decent size army.

Armageddon certainly does – and you'll be pleased to hear it may help with your anti-tank problems mentioned above. The Armageddon pattern sentinel is armed with a lascannon and has an enclosed cabin.

Typically, your infantry should deal with their tanks (weight of fire from heavy weapons), while your tanks deal with their infantry (because guard tanks excel at this – regardless of the foe). Standard Leman Russ battle tanks are a great versatile choice, and the others are to taste. Personally, I find Demolishers excellent in my heavily infantry-based army; and also think Eradicators are an excellent tank. Despite their so-so strength and poor AP, ignoring cover is huge – giving you a great start in Night Fight, and making a lot of units that rely on stealth, shrouded etc. very vulnerable.

The simple answer is that basic Guard infantry are your best bet at the moment if you're certain of the DKoK approach. You need loads of them and they're useable under the current codex as conscripts/whiteshields, regular infantry and veterans. They won't get superseded, and the sooner you start getting your basic stuff painted, the better.

Welcome to the Guard, soldier!

Sounds like you need an Eradicator and maybe some Griffons? They will make Orks cry little green tears, but only briefly because they'll be blown to tiny bits shortly afterwards. Hellhounds are also fantastic at removing all green stains - that's a WarriorFish guarantee or your money back!

As for Sentinels and Steel Legion... you may as well call them Steeltinels! :D

Before you ask, yes it is my holy mission to make everyone see the light of Eradicators and Griffons. The God-Emperor came to me in a vision and said "Dude, why isn't everyone totally using these? They rock".

Humm.. Looks like sentinels will be a fun addition then! I know this list wont pack a punch in tournments, but I think it would fun to play. I guess now I have a rough Idea of gathering up some Chimeras, and enough troops to start a 1500ish point game. WIth some Artty, Russes, and sentinels as my other tanks.

Heck, Those sentinels look pretty sweet, I may just buy that formation!

I was going to buy it when it was released until I discovered that it included a grand saving of 0p over buying them individually. May as well just get them at my own pace, that and I've enough to be doing as it is and that's before you take into account online store discounts!

I love Sentinels, the kit is great and pretty quick to assemble and paint. Easy to mod and even without modding still very dynamic with countless poses. They're nice and cheap and make great support units for infantry pushes along with Chimeras and Hellhounds. Outflanking Sentinels always put in a good show and keep the enemy on his toes. They're the epitome of how I like my Guard: numerous, mobile and shooty :)

Yeah, I see how they can be very useful. For my space marines I like to use land speeders. Same concept, Cheap, can pack a punch, expendable if needed. My LGS offers a discount when you buy over $100 of GW product, so that little price break helps.

Sounds like they're up your street :D Sentinels may not have the speed of skimmers but they can fight in CC so even without a weapon they're still dangerous forcing your opponent to deal with them properly which is great. I've taken out quite a few vehicles with such a charge - Sentinels are unusually flexible for a Guard unit :)
