Need help starting wolves

Recommended Posts

I want to start a fluff, fun, Space Wolf army using Ragnar Blackmane. Space Wolves were my first army when I started playing 2nd ed and I am being pulled back to them trying to get back into 40k. I played Imperial Guard and Dark Angels in 5th ed but have not played any 6th ed. From what I have read Grey Hunters in Drop Pods seem to be the way to go.

I do not want to use fortifications if possible as this does not fit the fluff that I want. I'm also wanting to use Blood Claws and try to have more infantry than vehicles. I do not know much about escalation, stronghold assault or the data sheets that keep coming out.

The only model I kept was my Storm Talon as I became quite fond of it.

I plan on using a lot of magnets to make the most of the bits in the box. That way when the new dex hits (I know it is about a year away) I'll be able to change weapons as needed.

I'm not wanting to win tournaments just to good times and fun games.

So down to the Q&A. Do you NEED allies to have a chance to win? Can I play a fun & fluffy list and still win games? What are the current must have units?

i am new to them as well ... been learning them in a local league ..

so far these are the ones that have made a difference for me

Grey Hunters ....

Long Fangs ....

and i use a Rune Priest for my HQ (cant have named units yet)

the big thing i run into, is the inability to deal with flyers.

Ragnar is headstrong and used by the great wolf as a vanguard force. They are masters of the drop pod assault. I would play a total bullrush force getting in close and personal. Get an odd numbers of drop pods, I' suggest 3, to drop some wolf guard or grey hunters in first turn to serve as a distraction and put a threat right there in his face. After that I'd suggest X claw forces, considering Ragnars background, this will be fitting, albeit harder to pull of in 6ed with dakka being generally easier to play and arguably stronger than choppa.

Still, here are a couple examples:

2x 15 bloodclaws slogging across the field with hidden axe, wolf guard battle leader with TDA and SS (and the free axe/thunderhammer) to eat challenges and a Rune Priest for rerolling to hit. The sheer number of attacks will overwhelm most units and since theres 34 models split between two units, the opponent will need to dedicate a massive amount of firepower against them.. which will be bad seeing as we have established that there will be some pods landing. Now, add ragnar to this and you will have at least 40 s5 attacks on the charge rerolling to hit.

Another option are Skyclaws, they can take a wulfen, free flamers and a hidden power fist, perfect to deliver a power fist right into the rear end of a tank or harass their support lines.

Never play bikes and not really worth it, cost too much. But some Land Speeders can be nice, dirt cheap too.

So yeah, that's the general idea. Loads of claws, some wolf guard, rune priests or wolf priests, ragnar, pods, speeders and you are good to go. It will be less forgiving than the usual setup of GH with long fangs and some stationary anti air, but hella fun, I tell you. And loads of bodies.

The odd flier isn't an issue for me there, seeing as I will be chopping most of the time of have overwhelming numbers. But flier spam a la necrons might be an issue. I usually get my tau allies or the aegis line, gotta see for yourself how your meta looks.

Have fun!

Welcome back!

I love my pod lists, I usually run 5 pods in more competitive games and 3 in fin ones.

The definite must haves are longfangs, grey hunters, and rune priests, so those might be a good beginning, but if you want a fun fluffy list I would mix in some other units.

The fun fluffy list I just finished building looks like this

HQ 450

Wolf lord tda, saga of the bear, thunder hammer, storm shield wolftail talisman 220

Rune priest tda 120

Wolf priest saga of the hunter 110

Elite 457

Wolf guard 217

2x Tda combiplasma 76

2x tda combimelta chainfist 106

Drop pod 35

Dreadnaught 2x autocannon 125

Lone wolf tda thunder hammer stormshield 2 pups 115

Troop 645

15 Blood claws, power axe 240

10 greyhunters, plasmaguns, wolf standard, drop pod 205

10 greyhunters, meltaguns, wolf standard, drop pod 200

Heavy support 305

6 long fangs 5 missile launcher 140

Preditor anihilator 165

Fast attack 140

2x landspeeder Multimelta heavy flamer 140

And the 2 games it has played were a blast, even though it is currently 1 and 1.

When you start buying troops, I recomend buying space wolf boxes and the new tactical squad boxes and mixing them together as the space wolf box has plenty of bits to wolf up your units.

Welcome back and have fun,
