Warsmith Aznable
I like the Games of Example. I don't think I've ever heard of Space Marines directly doing things to impress recruits before. Lysimachus
Just on the scheme as I'm a bit busy: Â If I'm totally honest I think it would work better for a Tzeentchian renegade Chapter? (and the name works much better as this too) Â You'd need to keep everything else really plain and dark (black/boltgun mix for weapons, maybe a dark grey stone effect for eagles - or chaos stars?) Â Also would look better if you could graduate/blend the colours like on the Celebrants scheme rather than piece by piece. Gorkimedes
HomeWorld The Iridescent were founded upon the world of Mubala. A planet covered to near entirety by vast tropical jungles. Humans had lived upon its surface for millennia before Imperial fleets encountered it during a crusade in M.33. The majority of Mubala's surface is free of human threatening predators, with only the isolated western continent containing beasts of any threat. While free of native dangers humans brought their own tragedies to this paradise world. Many wars raged across the planet during pre-Imperial times. The ruins of lost civilizations can be found swallowed up by the continent spanning forests. Since contact with the Imperium Mubala has been conflict free. The dense jungles offer a near limitless supply of spices, food and chemical rich plants. Under Imperial rule Mubala was designated as an Agri-World and remained as such until the 19th Astartes Founding in M.36. Color Scheme While their armor may seem patch-worked compared to more standard chapters individuality brings the Iridescent together just as well as uniformity. Each piece of armor speaks of the warrior who wears it, their past glories and future aspirations. Geneseed Ultramarines? Recruitment The Iridescent recruit solely from the world of Mubala. Contact between the general population and the chapter is limited except for during the times of recruitment. When the ranks of the sky-warriors must be replenished they descend to the world's surface and the Games of Example are held. Within ancient arenas individual warriors accomplish feats of strength and daring seeking to inspire the people with transhuman might and to ignite a flame within the bravest of the youths. Organization The Iridescent are a codex compliant chapter following all of the basic structures laid out millennia ago by Primarch Guilliman. As such the chapter is versed in all methods of warfare though they do seek to avoid protracted sieges and wars of attrition when possible. Aircraft and Land Speeders are a common sight when the Iridescent are upon the battlefield. The Naming The length of a brother's term as a scout varies within the Iridescent. Before they are given the honor of becoming a battle brother the aspirants are considered nameless and must earn their place within the ranks. Upon their elevation each brother is given a name the reflects his deeds and personality. Timeline of Important Events M36 The 19th Space Marine Founding, Mubala is chosen as a homeworld for a successor chapter created from the lineage of Roboute Guilliman. 3.122.937.M36 the last member of the original training cadre sent to found the chapter dies. 683.M37 The Iridescent come to the aid of Hiveworld DoLesch. A large portion of the chapter is lost defending the civilian population from attacks by a previously unmet Xenos threat. 691.M37 As the war on DoLesch drags on and the death toll rises into the trillions Skymaker and Dreamkeeper are sent to Terra to request aid from the High Lords. While they arrive safely they leave two years later without ever being given an audience. 822.M37 As a warband of the 4th( cough* http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282417-pan-humanism-warband-of-the-god-makers/ *cough) Legion attacks Mubala Dreamkeeper and Skymaker lead a group of their fellow marines inrebellion against their brothers. Large amounts of wargear is stolen and huge swathes of the planet's surface are burned by orbital fire. The traitors flee while Captain Shadowdash of the 10th declares a never-ending hunt for their lives. 903.M37 Captain Shadowdash is killed with his oaths of vengeance unfulfilled. His bones are used to craft a sword ( or something else?) wielded by the chapter's champions so that he might one day taste the vengeance he sought. Character names/ideas so I don't forget them. Darrell
Article is relatively bare-bones at the moment, but a few things come to mind. Â 1. Why is a Space Marine Chapter, whose Astartes will literally know nothing but war and training for war upon their selection, based on such a relatively tranquil world? The people seem to know no hardship, and require inspiration to bother trying to do anything worth noticing. The population sounds lazy. Why do they want to recruit from a lazy populace? Were they forced to be based on Mumbala? If so, why did someone think it would make a good base for a Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes or that the protection of an entire Chapter was necessary? If they weren't forced, what made them settle? The people don't seem particularly impressive--perhaps it is the only inhabited planet within a reasonable distance of their duties? I like the idea of Space Marines putting on a show for humans, which is certainly different, but it will need some development. Â 2. If you want to start neophytes off with a relatively dull color scheme and become more vibrant with experience, perhaps the colors represent the various companies in which the Astartes has fought. The armor starts off a dark color, or perhaps entirely unpainted, and the first color to be applied is whatever represents the Scout Company (Or whatever may pass for the Scout Company). The length of the color corresponds to how long the Space Marine spent in the respective company. So, for instance, someone with a long band of Scout coloration may have had difficulties proving himself while someone whose band was short had quickly advanced. This could proceed up the armor, the colors telling a history of the Marine's service as the base color is painted over. A separate color scheme with the arms could represent specialties with different weapons or fighting styles, with each color representing a weapon or combat preference. The color of the hands would be the primary specialty (Perhaps with that specific hand), then fading as their experience lessens toward the shoulder. This way, two marines from two totally different companies who had never before met would be able to size each other up at a glance. "He advanced quickly as a neophyte and through the Reserve companies, but looks like he had some trouble when he was put into the 5th." "He's deadly with that plasma cannon, and mean with a power sword." It gives an easily visible record of their rise through the ranks to the Space Marines, but to outsiders and even other Chapters they just look like a complete mess. Â I'm not sure how serious you were about the Chapter, but those were the things that came to me while I was reading. Gorkimedes
Good points, I can see why the population comes off as kind of lazy. Maybe for a reason why a chapter would be placed upon such a world I could push the founding back to during the Nova Terra Interregnum ( 8th I think) and place it in Segmentum Pacificus. Its' an Agri-World where a large amount of chemicals are harvested, they could be seen as vital to the imperial war effort. The chapter being there could be a show of force by the High Lords to the Ur-Council, "you aren't taking this one". Â I really like the idea of armor telling an inside story to the rest of the chapter. Warsmith Aznable
The Games of Example don't necessarily have to "make sense". It could just be tradition, and tradition is everything to most chapters. It could commemorate a victory that turned a fleet based chapter into one with a home world, maybe. It could be something that has gone on for so long and changed so much that nobody even remembers exactly how it started or even what it originally was. Maybe they found a human world still in the darkness of Old Night, and instead of waging war on them to bring them into the Imperial fold, they decided to demonstrate how strong the Imperium was, and this was so popular with the people that they kept asking to see it, and centuries later it had turned into a Space Marine circus that they take advantage of to round up likely children. Point being, it's an interesting idea that just needs to be framed correctly. Gorkimedes
Appreciate all the ideas guys. Maybe something along the lines of this?    M.35 sees the Imperium challenged in ways not seen since the Great Heresy. The Ur-Council of Nova Terra has claimed dominion over Segmentum Pacificus and the Moirae Schism threatens to tear the Mechanicus apart. As part of the tenth Astartes Founding The High-Lords in their infinite wisdom task one of the new chapters with exploring unconquered space within Ultima Segmentum.     Led by Alexandros of {insert name here} the new chapter crusaded far from Imperium controlled space for the first three hundred years of its’ existence. After centuries of crusading the chapter encountered Mubala a world that had never before been touched by the Imperium’s might. As the chapter prepared for another long campaign of compliance something surprised them. The peoples of Mubala were unlike those previously encountered by the chapter. Where the people of other worlds fought to the bitter end against integration into the Imperium these piled endless questions upon them. Treating the astartes not as conquering monsters but as deified sky-warriors the people of Mubala requested to see the full might of these strangers on display, a request the battle-weary marines were glad to fulfill. A great parade upon the planet's surface was held.     Over the years the chapter continued to return to Mubala to recruit new members, favoring the eager crowds over the unwilling recruits taken from other worlds. The chapter fortress continued to grow as more and more of the chapter’s operations were centered upon the world. Eventually the chapter as a whole officially settled upon Mubala choosing to make the welcoming world their sole recruiting ground. As the chapter's presence grew so to did the parades as each new generation of battle-brothers added their own flavor to the events. Morphing over time into great games held to find new aspirants. Gorkimedes
So I've been thinking about the color scheme and how it would work. Tried making two examples in the painter to get a visual of how it would function. Thoughts? Colors correspond to time spent in various role. pink= scout red= assault purple= tactical Teal= devestator white faceplate= veteran sergeant The first marine is predominately red signifying that he is an assault specialist but he spent an extended amount of time in the scout company so the pink extends far up his armor. The second marine got out of the scout company quicker so only his boots bear that color but he's relatively horrible at close combat so only his glove bears that mark Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284937-the-collected-works-of-brotastic/#findComment-3557062 Share on other sites

Gorkimedes
Debating it, I'm pretty much tapped out on miniatures at the moment so I'm trying to figure out what I should buy next. Never bought any Forgeworld stuff before so I was thinking about trying some of that stuff out. Including these guys over the past few years I've thought of  basic ideas for a handful of chapters and two warbands, maybe a paragraph or two on each. The two paths I'm thinking of going are  1- focus on just these guys or 2- Try and blend them all together/ make up fluff for my own sector and paint a mixed crusade force Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284937-the-collected-works-of-brotastic/#findComment-3559466 Share on other sites
Conn Eremon
I can guarantee that the second option is a helluva lot of fun. Gorkimedes
Had the basic idea for these guys before the Iridescent. I think having two chapters on Agri-worlds might be too similar. I'll try and make it work but if not one will get changed. [basicheader=]Overview- Knights of Pir[/basicheader] Homeworld- Pir Battlecry- The basket and the shield! Benu and the Second The first chapter master of the Knights of Pir was Lord Benu of the Imperial Fists. Under his guidance the new chapter was forged into a fighting machine that would have made Dorn himself proud and the strictest compliance to the codex was enforced. Upon Foster's World the future of the Knights of Pir changed forever. Assaulted by twisted daemons from beyond the veil Foster's World cried out for salvation and the Knights of Pir were quick to respond. At the time of this engagement the chapter was relatively young. When the forces of the ether charged the chapter broke rank, the young marines fleeing before the daemonic onslaught. Alone Chapter Master Benu stood defiant, dueling with three princes of mist and shadow. Two were cast back to their hells before the third lifted up the broken Astartes lord and rended his body. Horrified by the sight of their Lord's death the Knights of Pir attacked, reclaiming Benu's body and destroying the last of the daemonic princes. Tech-marines and Apothecaries worked tirelessly sealing the fallen chapter master within the Sarcophagus of a Dreadnought. Allepo, the first captain elevated from the rank of the Pir marines, succeeded the fallen Benu as chapter master and his fate foreshadowed the future of his chapter. Groomed from his earliest days in the chapter by Benu to be his successor, Allepo was a son of Dorn through and through but as self hate consumed the chapter after Foster's World it touched Allepo the strongest. As time past he became more and more erratic, taking the Knight of Pir from one hellish battle to the next without rest, leading one suicide charge after the next hoping to find forgiveness through struggle. By the time of his death and interment within a dreadnought there was nothing left of Allepo besides pain. When the Second marches to war alone he is a mindless machine of death, only alongside his former master is Allepo a shadow of the paragon he once was. The Knight of Pir are a small chapter, hovering for the most part at 600 marines but at times falling far below that. As such the rarely march to war on their own, instead choosing to attach themselves to local Imperial forces the majority of the time. Following the death of Chapter Master Benu recruitment demands were taken to the extreme. Benu's death was seen as a sign of weakness within the new chapter, one that would be removed by any means necessary. It is not unheard of for brothers in the Knight of Pir to have spent fifty or sixty years as scouts before being elevated to full membership within the chapter. Upon proving themselves as scouts the aspirants must pass one final test. Echoing the pain-glove of their forefather's the aspirants spend time within a chamber of pure torture. Ancient technologies flood their nerves with pain while chaplains seek to get them to renounce their oaths to the Emperor. Aspirants remain in this state until the chaplains are satisfied enough to pass judgment upon them. The smallest hint of doubt means death but if they succeed the scouts are given a white colored helm signifying their purity. Conclusion The Knights of Pir believe it is their duty to protect and provide for the Emperor's people. Their world feeds the hungry masses and their shields guard them from harm. They do this not out of a sense of benevolence but out of service to their lord upon Terra. The Knights do their duty so that the peoples of the Imperium may do theirs. LongGone
Two issues the popped out at me on the first read: Six months in the room of pain? That is a very long time. Have you looked at the fluff for Imperial Fists to see if they have a record of who's been in the pain glove the longest? Even if it's longer than six months, I'd put some money on it being someone on the level of a Chapter Master. An aspirant trial that involves pain endurance is pretty unique, but I would scale back the awesomeness a lil' bit. Also, and this is more of a nitpick than anything else, but I would rethink the battlecry. Statement+Response battlecries are an iffy thing for me. You know the cliche villain who is defeated because he spent too much time talking? In my mind, the more involved involved the cry, the more likely your guys will catch a bolt to the dome piece. Gorkimedes
Can see how that's  a bit to X-treme, maybe ten days or so? Can't find anything that mentions length online about the pain-glove but in Angels of Darkness one of the Fallen is tortured by chaplains for fifteen days. Lexicanum says he's a chapter master pre-heresy, so something a bit less than that might work. Zincite
brotastic, on 04 Jan 2014 - 03:56, said: Can't find anything that mentions length online about the pain-glove but in Angels of Darkness one of the Fallen is tortured by chaplains for fifteen days. In the old Index Astartes article, Rogal Dorn "endured the pain glove for seven days until he was gifted with a vision of the Emperor". I suppose it's open to interpretation as to whether that's an incredibly long time and the vision was granted to him because of the exceptional circumstances, or whether his time in the pain glove was cut short. However, if there's nothing to compare it to I would play it on the safe side.  Of course there's nothing stopping you using ambiguous terms. 'The aspirants must spend a prolonged period of time in the pain glove.' 'The torture continues for an excessive amount of time, until the chaplains are satisfied.' Gorkimedes
Some basic ideas for last loyalist chapter. Will add more later. [basicheader=]Overview- Solar Foxes[/basicheader] The blood of Heshet, the flesh of Dorn, the will of the Emperor! [basicheaderhalf=]Heshet- A World In Decay[/basicheaderhalf] Created during the Sixteenth Astartes Founding the Solar Foxes were given the planet of Heshet as their homeworld. A once thriving planet covered in cities of staggering scale Heshet had become a blight upon Sector Altansar. Chocking under the weight of its' past glories the planet was costing the Imperium more and more to supply and providing ever less in return. As the world slowly spiraled into anarchy it was seen as a little loss to give Heshet to the newly founded chapter. The growing gang-culture would provide ample recruits for the Solar Foxes. Surprisingly the training cadre sent to construct the chapter was not satisfied with ruling over the decaying heaps of strato-scraping cities. Broadcasting a vox-message world wide the chapter master of the Solar Foxes made three promises to the people of his new home. I give you the freedom to live a life free of fear of the shadows. I give you the freedom to serve your lord and do your duty to the Imperium. I give you the freedom to challenge me with the foreknowledge of my wrath. What followed was a campaign of brutal efficiency. Petty lords and gang masters were ground to dust beneath the boots of the Astartes. The people of Heshet were forced to work or die and over time the world itself was reborn. Hive cities were repaired and order was restored. By the time the chapter turned its' attention outwards what was left was a model world of the Imperium. The people worked and lived unafraid of crime or death, upon Heshet only the light need be feared. Gorkimedes
Same stuff as the other thread, just trying to collect everything. Anyone know of any completed diy warbands? Been trying to find examples but all the ones I find are for loyalists. Now to decide which of these four to finish first. Pan Humanism and the Warriors of the Truth Color Scheme Uhhhhhh Iron Warriors colors with a gold or copper helm? The Promise "Why did we fail at Terra? The answer is simple, we allied with those who had forgotten their humanity. My father tore down Dorn’s walls with such speed that it was embarrassing. Our legions stood outside the final gate ready to grasp victory… and where was Fulgrim? At the deciding moment of mankind’s greatest war where were the rabble of the third? Breaking rank to gallivant through the streets of Terra screaming praises to there Xenos born god. Look to the Eldar, how long did these things rule over the galaxy? I have heard tales that before their fall their lives were measured not by hundreds or thousands but by millions of years. These creatures claimed the very heavens as their home and what have they to show for it? One weak and petty god. Humanity has barely begun to walk the path to ascension and we already eclipse them. Our gods outnumbered theirs before we crawled out of the mud on Terra. Reject this xenos deity it offers you nothing that true human gods can give you. Does mighty Khorne not give you the strength to fight, the will to draw your blade and stand between your enemies and all that you cherish? Who sustains us through our trials and our despair? Nurgle! When you look at the universe and say this is not right, this must change, that is Tzeentch freeing your mind from blindness! All of these gifts lend strength to our greater cause. But do the worshippers of Slaanesh seek the same greater glories as us? No, they are fickle, self-serving cowards. They would sacrifice humanities noble cause for their own ends! I was one of the last to quit the field on Terra. As we were fleeing to our drop ships a vision overcame me. The Emperor came to me and told me of his fate. So-called loyal sons had imprisoned him within a throne of gold. The legions on Terra had not been defending him; they had been keeping him trapped. Dorn, Sanguinius and Khan, traitors who sought to prevent the Emperor from completing his great work. Below his palace the Emperor was attempting to tear a hole into the very heart of the immaterium. A stable pathway where the living god could commune with the divine chorus. At Terra, Horus had contained a portion of the gods within himself. Compared to the nova that is the Emperor, Horus was but a candle. This was the promise made to me on Terra. Free the Emperor from his prison and he will summon his fellows within himself. The entirety of the gods will be infused into the Emperor and heaven will walk upon mortal soil. Mankind has created the greatest gods to ever exist, one more struggle and we will rise to meet them."- Tryket Verinan Speaker of the Truth. Origins "From its' inception I was with the Fourth. First hand I saw the reawakening of our species, watched as the Emperor reforged a shattered husk of a planet into the shining capital of an empire. As my body was reshaped by the Emperors gene-techs so too did my mind change. What had barely been noticeable before was now a loud booming voice. When the legion marched to war the heavens sang to me of the certainty of our mission and I brought the manifest wrath of the Emperor down upon our enemies. I was there at Nikaea when the strong were punished for the mistakes of the foolish. The numbers of the warp-touched were few among the Iron Warriors but it was seen fit to send a handful of us to observe the event. My heart sank when the ruling turned against us. We shared power with Magnus but never his hubris...his foolishness. As we departed I caught sight of Lord Commander Eidolon with a smug grin across his face. Secure I'm sure in his freshly reinforced sense of self-righteousness. Always the dutiful son I, regretfully, obeyed the Edict to the letter, giving up divine fire for simple bolt and blade. My mind I wrapped in a fortress of wards and traps, all but severing myself from the call of the Empyrean. Until Terra I remained blind in my self imposed isolation. As the legions were fleeing the homeworld a great wave of psychic pain rolled across the land. My wards were burned and cast asunder in an instant. I could feel the Emperor calling out in grief at his imprisonment. As awareness flooded my mind I cursed those who had falsesly accused my kind and caused our censure, I cursed those to weak to hear the call, I cursed my own blindness! Had I listened, had I not rejected my gifts perhaphs I could have changed these events. I will not make the same mistakes again. Next time I march upon Terran soil it will be with divine words upon my lips and men of faith at my side."- Recollections of the Truth-Speaker Beliefs " Chaos, never before has such a false name been used to keep the masses blind to the truth. It is not disorder our gods bring but change...and change has always frightened the weak. The gods come from humanity. The Heavenly Choir from our dreams, the Emperor from our flesh. Deny them and you deny yourself." The God-Makers believe in the unquestionable divinity of mankind. It is humanities destiny to not just struggle to survive, but to grow, prosper and conquer. All the lights in creation will one day shine upon human eyes alone. All other races of note have gods in one form or another. The Eldar and their Dark Prince, the Ork hordes and their empowered war-bosses. These races have ended their progress while mankind marches on because they failed to unite the divine with the material. The gods of the warp are beings of dream stuff, fickle and changeable things. Subject to the winds of imagination and the tides of emotion. The Emperor is resolute and strong, constrained within the iron laws of the universe. When mankind's dreams are combined with their reality all obstacles will be washed away. Organization " Change gave Horus' forces the strength to tear down the greatest Empire to ever claim the stars. Disorder is what allowed the strong to fall before the weak." The God-Makers see the gods as vehicles for humanities growth, not excuses to descend into madness. Personal growth is encouraged but order is enforced. Tryket Verinan's word is law and his Iron Warrior brothers stand at the warband's head. The worship of the True Pantheon has limited the warband's growth, Astartes from the old legions look upon Verinan's belief in the Emperor with disgust. It is from the younger generations that most of the warband's new recruits come from. Space Marines dissatisfied after seeing no victory in sight after centuries of serving the Imperium, renegades who see their brothers accepting a life of squaller and pointless bickering hiding within warp storms. The Eminent March For the past ten thousand years the God-Makers have sailed within the void between stars. Striking at worlds, seemingly at random. While the actions of the God-Makers may seem without purpose they are not. The gods scream to Verinan from the warp, demanding that their vessel be freed from his prison. Their howls direct the fleet to search out the so-called living saints of the Imperium. Over ten millennia the God-Makers have captured twenty-one of these divine mortals. The ritual cast upon these paragons is simple and horrible. Taken to the heart of a warp storm a daemon is summoned into their holy flesh. Carry both the gifts of the Emperor and the blessing of the neverborn has killed all but one of these saints. As they tear themselves apart Verinan listens to their death-screams. He has claimed to hear many things within these cries of pain. Whispers of words spoken upon Holy Terra, commands from the Emperor himself and even visions sent back in time from the united pantheon. Each sacrificial union has changed Verinan. When each saint finds the brink of oblivion he has fed upon their warp energy. Long gone is the Iron Warrior who fled from his legion at Sebastus IV. Those who have looked upon him describe him as a figure of constant change. At times he appears like his old self, a simple warrior of the fourth legion, moments later a tower monster of raw flesh and shadows. Still other times Verinan will seem to be perfection given flesh, his features twisting to a form akin to the Emperor himself.
