Alpha Legion Cell Regulus Beta 088- Callsign: Adders

So as much as I love 40k, my status as an almost broke college student has left me with few options for my 30k Alpha Legion.  Therefore, I've turned to converting GW plastic kits.  Below is my first finished (construction wise, that is) Tac Squad,Beta Tau 1-1, with some fluff.

IMG 0612[1]

BT 1-1 is classed as a Fire Support and Suppression Squad, which means they are tasked with delivering effective fire to support largwe squads as they move up.  All of BT 1-1's Legionnaires are armed with Equis- pattern suppressed boltguns and boltpistols.

IMG 0611[1]

Legionnaire Vonaire(Von) Telnyr (1-3)is the squad's Designated Marksman.  His boltgun is equipped with a bipod and enhanced scope, for acquiring targets of  opportunity.  His armor, which is the same worn as many of the other members of the squad is Vibora pattern, a local variant of Mk. 4 and Mk. 6 plate being developed by Alpharius and Corax in the years right before the Istvaan V massacre.

Sgt

Sergeant Daxandr (Dax) Koe (1-1) is the grizzled Terran veteran leading BT 1-1.  As a result of his age, being one of the older legionnaires in a line squad, Koe is allowed to wear small tokens of past battles.  For example, the chain hanging from his modified Mk. III chestplate is a symbol of his status as a Strike Leader for the Pacification of Decerna III, a compliance where the Alpha Legion sustained no causalities.  While Alpha Legionnaires are usually clean-shaven, Koe sports a modest goatee, used in a recent covert operation where facial hair was used to better blend with the local population.  His large-bladed croatil knife hangs from his left hip; the mono-molecular blade is sharp enough to cut clean through power armor.

IMG 0609[1]

A side shot of a standard Legionnaire from BT 1-1.  Legionnaire Remus (Rem) Otane, or 2-3 (2nd File, 3rd man) is a fairly new edition to BT 1-1 and as a result has more updated pieces of armor.  His helm is a Mk. 4 Vibora - epsilon pattern  masks the typical snout of the Mk.4 behind a thin layer of radar dampening ballistics foam.  His greaves are typical Mk.6, fresh off the Manufactorium line.  His Equis bolter with 20 round clip and three spares  on his right shoulder.  His chest plate is a Mk.5 Hydrian pattern.

Well, this is all for now, more to come shortly!

I hate to point it out, but Von's bolter muzzle is wonky. Other than that, these guys look pretty cool. Have you worked out how you're gonna paint them yet?

Hydra Dominatus!

Dragonlover

Yeah, the side effect of not having enough pins to straighten all of the silencers, nothing a little greenstuff cant fix, however. thumbsup.gif

Well I'd hate to double post, but I've got some more Legionnaires for you all!  This batch was kitbashed pretty hard...and it shows, however the lack of shoulder pads is intentional, to better represent the Recon feel.

Beta Tau 2-1 Heavy Recon Squad.

IMG 0614[1]

BT 2-1 has been a staple of the Legion's recon element since the Kayvas Belt Expedtion, where Sergeant Rekstis Seo (Rek) led his squad in eliminating elements of a Ork motor pool, causing complete and utter havoc amongst the Xenos which led to a weak point in the right flank of the Ork line which was exploited by a massive Alpha Legion armored strike.  Legionnaires Zebrious (Zeb,1-3) Olantyr, Janus(Jan, 1-4) Zemlan and Goran (Gor, 1-5) Bosob all wear Mk. 4 Vibora pattern armor and camo cloaks. Legionnaire Kalif(Kal, 1-2) Mosaab wears modified Mk.4 plate gifted to him by a member of a Sons of Horus Reaver Squad he bested in an honor dual (A rare occurrence for Alphas). Sgt. Seo wears a modified Mk. 3 helm with ballistic foam obscuring the vox grilles.  All of the Legionnaires, save Zeb carry Equis Alpha pattern bolters, with extended barrells, suppressors and scope.  Zeb's Mamba pattern bolter is an entirely different animal, firing an Anti-armor round chambered in .88 caliber,  full .18cm larger than a standard bolt shell and with a uranium core.

Sgt Rekstis Seo

IMG 0615[1]

Sgt. Seo is a Homeworld veteran, one of the first batch of non-Terran Alphas.  His proficiency in navigation and tracking made him a natural choice for command of a Recon squad.  The Legiones Astartes training further enhanced his skills and provided him with the equipment and weapons to become an effective warrior.  His lower chestplate bears scars of a hasty armor repair. He brandishes the classic Croatil hunting knife and a Equis pattern bolt pistol.  He also carries an unsuppressed bolter maglocked to his back but it is rarely used.

IMG 0616[1]

Legionnaire Zeb Olantyr is a young, yet experienced sniper, with only a decade of experience under his belt.  At first, he struggled to fill the shoes of departing squad Precisonaire, the current Vigilator, Sebastyan Vryand, but earned his squad-mates trust and admiration for diffusing a tense hostage situation where an eldar pirate band had sedated and taken hostage a member of another Recon squad during an ambush on Krxyis IV.

More tomorrow!

Okay, so after a couple of days of  experiementing with different blue/greens, I've decided on my color pattern for my Alphas, which is showcased below on the Cell Vigilator, Sebastyan Vryand.

IMG 0642[1]

Vigilator Sebastyan (Seb, Adder Actual 1-1) Vryand is a Terran veteran, one of the first batch of Alpha Legionnaires recruited from Terra; he hails from the Southern Caucasus region.  Strike  Commander (his formal title) Vryand started his Legiones Astartes career in a line tactical squad of Gamma company, eventually working his way up to a spot in one of the elite Recon squads, under Sgt. Seo where his skill with a rifle became known to the Legion command, particularly Lord Omegon, the commander of the  Stealth squads.  He was promoted to Vigilator following the Ferinus Worlds campaign where he was credited with 5 Exarch kills, mortally wounding an Eldar Autarch and disabling or immobilizing 4 enemy transports over the span of 18 months.  Seb sports a Mk.4 helm with slaved scope which connects to his Equis pattern bolter.  His chestplate and greaves are of an unknown, possibly experimental Alpha Legion pattern(which would be dubbed Mk.5 in post-Heresy analysis)  On his backpack is a Vox unit and Auspex, as well as advanced rangefinding and laser targeting devices.  At his feet is his trusty power sword, which he uses with as much skill as his bolter.

In regards to the paint scheme, I have yet to really highlight it, but this picture is just supposed to give you an idea of the base.

That's all for now.. My next post, aside from models, will include some Legion structure, as I have imagined it, and should hope to clear up what exactly, a CELL is.

Thanks! The comments keep me motivated yes.gif .

As for the models, the snowstorm that just hit the NE U.S. has kept me from priming my models, however, I've come up with a basic Alpha Legion organizational chart that explains how the Legion operates.

-Legion Battalion Combat Force-4,000-5,000 Legionnaires + support personnel and attached armor/air support

The largest organizational unit for the Alpha Legion during the Great Crusade, and the Heresy, the LBCF provided the Legion with the manpower to prosecute a Compliance campaign, or in the case of the Isstvan V Atrocity, help to exterminate almost three legions worth of Astartes. It was formed of 3-5 Battalions and usually commanded by Alpharius, Omegon, or one of their stand-in's (i.e. only the Primarchs commanded these formations.) An example of such a formation would be the attempted Prosecution of Nurth. The Alpha Legion was known to possess around 6 of these formation, the 22nd, 44th, 66th, 88th, 122th, and the 144th.

-Battalion- 1,000-1,500 Legionnaires+ support personnel and attached armor/air support

The most tactically flexible organizational unit within the XX, the Battalion was a mainstay of Alpha Legion combat actions during their participation in the Great Crusade. Each Battalion, commanded by a Commander consisted of 3-4 Line Companies, consisting of regular, bolter armed Legionnaires, each commanded by a Lieutenant Commander(or Captain), a Fire Support group(usually 1-3 Heavy Support Squads), a Special Weapons Platoon (1-3 Tac. Support Squads) a Reconnaissance Platoon (3 Recon Squads), an Apothecary Detachment, and a Specialist Detachment(Terminators, Stealth Squad, Seekers, Breachers or Destroyers). These formations provided the Alpha Legion with the bulk of their victories, and were the main units present at the Kayvas Belt Expedition or Tesstra Prime (which is why the XXth took such care in the prosecution of the planet, because they lacked the manpower for an open battle). The XXth is known to 22 such Battalions, each receiving a a letter from the XXth Legion phonetic alphabet (i.e Alfar, Bold, Chayn, Deki Battalion, and so on.

-Company-200 men each, Specialist Companies differ.

The company is the organizational level at which a XXth Legion force stops receiving supporting armor or air support. The line companies, each housed on a Strike Cruiser(1 each) or Battle Barge (up to three) were supposed to be self-sufficient. As detailed above, a Line Company was composed of 200 bolter-armed marines, with a full range of deployment options, including Drop Pods and Rhinos. Rarely did an entire company take part in a single engagement, as it was more likely that a part of the company was supplemented with Specialist units, based on the type of conflict at hand. Specialist companies usually numbered between 150 (the entire Legion Destroyer cadre, Rho Actual) and 300 (the combined Recon/Stealth company, Epsilon Actual) Line Companies were designated using the Greek Alphabet as well, but with repeating letters, extending to Epsilon Zeta company, Specialist Companies, were all within the first "Series" and received the phrase Actual after their letter to show them as the only one of their type. * A note on the "Actual" designation...it refers to a unit that is either the only of its kind present in the formation, or the Headquarters unit for the formation.*

***Cell***- Unit Sizes differs, but is most comparable to Companies.

The Cell is a uniquely Alpha Legion formation. It consists of A Strike Commander, along with as many different squad types as is needed for the mission. Usually, the Strike Commander is contacted by the Primarch and is given a particular mission to accomplish. He is given a single Strike Cruiser and access to the Legion's combat records. From here, he pulls the squads or in some case, individual Legionnaires, he needs for the operation. These men are picked usually for their A) excellent infiltration, stealth or espionage scores or B ) for their combat record and brutality...sometimes for both. An example of this procedure, called Cell Harvesting, is evident in the removal of Squad Sigma from the Chondax System for the completion of the Tenebrae Misson (see The Serpent Beneath). Units picked for a Cell operation are given completely random callsigns, (i.e. Beta Tau 1-1) but the Cell Name, and Call Sign (Regulus Beta 088, Adders) all have meaning, which no person, outside the Legion has yet to decode. Typically, Cells do not exceed 150 men, and NEVER exceed 200, this is including operatives, recruited by the Cell once their mission has been established.

-Platoon- 50 Legionnaires

Althogh rarely used outside of Company supply and medical records, the Platoon allows a Captain to easily break down his company into quarters, or for a Battalion commander to assigned parts of Specialist companies to Line Companies.

-Squad- 10-20 men

Squads are an integral part of any Legiones Astartes force, but especially so for the XXth. The Alpha Legion prides itself on maneuverability in combat, and the squad allows just that. Usually Tactical Squads, Tactical Assault Squads, or Breacher Squads will be 20 men strong, while Seeker, Tactical Support/Heavy Squads, Destroyer Squads, Terminator Squads, and Stealth Squads will number 10 men, as they are more effective in smaller numbers.

-Fire Team-5 men

A Fire Team is simply a designation for a casualty-depleted or purposely scaled down Seeker, Tac Support Squad, Heavy Support Squad, Destroyer Squad or Terminator Squad. It is the smallest formation used by the XXth Legion.

Well thats all for now folks!

Ok so I finally got to sling some paint on these bad boys!

First up, Cell Moritat Vicandyr (Vic, Adder Actual 2-1) Moldese

IMG 0653[1]

Moritat Moldese leads the Rho Actual Destroyer Detachment of the Adders.  He wields two plasma pistols with deadly precision, being a fan of up close attacks and the uniqueness of the weapons used by Destroyer squads.  His Mk.4 Vibora pattern suit (all parts) is reinforced in the chest area to protect against the Rad weapons used by his companions.  His armor is, as usual with the Alpha Legion, is primarily unadorned, except for the Death's Head on his left shoulder pad, a symbol of the Destroyer Cadre, and the Phoenix on his right shoulder pad which marks him as a Moritat.  Moldese is quiet Legionnaire, he keeps to himself and when not in his arming quarters, the only other place he will go is the Apothecary, conversing with the Medicae staff about the ravenous cancer that afflicts himself and  other Destroyers, due to the nature of their weapons.

Lieutenant Commander Moyses (Moy, Adder Loud) Straub, Cell Figurehead (Praetor)

IMG 0652[1]

Lieutenant Commander Straub is a shadowy figure, appointed to the Adders Cell detachment by the Primarch himself.  He is rarely involved with combat actions, except in the case that he summoned there.  Straub is present at any and all political actions regarding the Cell and acts as the Cell Commander when in the company of other Legiones Astartes, Imperial, or xenos forces.  While his role as a Commander is much of a farce, Lt. Commander Straub is an adept swordsman and can best even some of the Palatine Blades of the III Legion.  His Mk.3 Helmet sports an ornate plume, which while out of place in the XXth, suits his status, while the rest of his artificer-crafted Mk. 4 is relatively plain.  Also it is known that Straub is in fact, a seasoned veteran Cell commander, and acts as an adviser to Commander Vryand.

Seeker Squad, Sigma Actual

IMG 0657[1]

Sigma Actual was tasked to the Adders on Commander Vryand's personal orders.  They accompany him on most missions as his  personal  fireteam.  Sigma Actual wears darkened XX Legion armor colors, and while not as dark as the Stealth Squads, it still provides more than adequate camouflage.   Sgt. Antilles (Ant, 1-1) Rorsche filled out his squad with crack shots and stealthy Legionnaires such as Pawel (Paw, 1-4) Wlasyuk and has purposely kept the squad's size to 5 in order to maximize their effectiveness while keeping the size down.

Sgt. Antilles Rorsche

IMG 0655[1]

Sergeant Ant Rorsche has earned the respect of the Seeker company through his exceptional tracking skills, which were honed in the Recon squads, where he fought alongside Commander Vryand.  He rose through the ranks of the Recon squads, narrowly missing Precisonaire in Sgt. Seo's squad but was awarded with Sergeant-ship of his own Seeker squad shortly after.  Rorsche has trained his squad relentlessly on the tactics of both urban and rural tracking and expects each Legionnaire to put in at least 10 hours of range-work with their bolters each training cycle.  Rarely does Rorsche pick from ranks other than the Recon squads, the exception being Legionnaire Wlasyuk, who was drawn from a regular line company.  His modified Mk. 3 plate is draped in a flowing robe, as is common practice with many Seeker squads, in order to break up the lines of their armor.  His chestplate sports a stealthy yet reinforced stomach area while the gorget provides extra protection with no added stealth bonus.  Sgt Rorsche tends to lead from the front and is very rarely seen with a helmet, as he believes it hinders his ability to track targets.

Legionnaire Pawel (Paw, 1-4) Wlasyuk

IMG 0656[1]

Legionnaire Wlasyuk, aside from his terrific marksmanship, was a very unremarkable Legionnaire at a time.  Beginning in Gamma Iota company, Wlasyuk fought his first few engagements without wasting much ammunition. yet his Squadmates were astonished because in each battle, "The Deadly Paw" as he had become known, had exceeded almost all of them in kill numbers.  His dead eye ability to spot weaknesses in enemy armor made him a legend in his company and  this legend soon spread to the rest of the Legion.  He was soon noticed by Captain Torbel Maxentus, the Seeker company commander, and a test of sorts was arranged.  Should he lay low 5 Loyalist officers on Isstvan V, he would be spared the long, arduous tour of duty in the Recon squads and be promoted to a Seeker squad.  Legionnaire Wlasyuk killed 7 loyal Astartes that day, including an Iron Hands Morlock and he is believed to also be the sniper who laid low Commander Solaro of the XIVth and allowed Alpha Legion infiltrators to take on his identity.  For this, he was given a billet in Sgt. Rorsche's squad.  His Mk. 4 Vibora suit bares the usual modifications of the XXth Techmarines, and he is seen drawing his Croatil knife, seemingly as he is bringing up the rear of the column.  It is clear that the leadership of the Alpha Legion has their eye on Pawel, but only time will tell what will become of him.

Thats all for now!

DH

Painting wise, I understand these aren't the best pictures, but be assured that the lack of highlighting on the Seeker squad is intentional, due to their missions involving lots of stealth.
