Chapter Badges and Unit Markings on MkVI armour

Quite a simple question - I'm about to start painting some Rogue Trader period Mk VI marines with the studded left shoulder pad, where the heck should I put what markings? The modern codex style is to put the Chapter Badge on the left shoulder pad, not available in this case. The best I can think of is to either:

1 - leave off the tactical arrow and put the chapter badge on the right shoulder (as I recall this is how it used to be in 1987!)

2 - superimpose the chapter badge over the tactical arrow

but I'd love to hear what other people have done to combat this!

I'm aiming to try and make this a "modern" Space Marine force with old miniatures rather than recreate an RT army or embrace the current Heresy-era obsession.

Most of the time I see people moving the markings to the grieves but you could put a banner (IE one of the tactical squad loincloth things) over the pad & put the marking on that. A homebrew version of this pad from the FW Red Scorps kit:

The Templars and Dark Angels kits do similar stuff as well.

Chapter badge always goes on the right shoulder for Mk. 6. Squad markings can be left off entirely or added to a knee or just about anywhere else, depending on chapter. I think it's fine to leave it off and that's what I do.

This should give you an idea of how it was done:

If you can find someone with the original ook (below), this would help:

And this one (available - I think - for £20 at Black Library if you cannot find someone with a copy):

This gives an idea of what the latter book has:

But it has more without the rims on the shoulderpads.

In truth, there are a lot of options open to you. The Forge World Imperial Armour books do a great job of showing the variety. You can put either squad or Chapter badges on the shoulder pads, then put the other on the chest, kneepad, greaves, whatever. You don't even need all of your battle-brothers to use the same pattern - some might have the Chapter badge on the shoulder pad and the squad badge on the kneepad/greave, while others might reverse that.

Don't feel constrained to using a rigid pattern, and don't feel constrained to using a single older pattern that might be completely obsolete. Do whatever works for you.

Wow, that's a lot of ideas, very helpful. Thanks especially to Seleucus for the big pile of RT era art, this would all be easier if I could find my old books and WDs (which I am sure are in the loft somewhere!).

I think a big Tactical arrow makes a nice backdrop for a chapter logo, but the other unit badges less so. Maybe moving that to the right knee would make good sense. Of course it would be easier to decide if I had actually nailed down a COLOUR, a NAME, or a BADGE for my chapter! wallbash.gif

Personally, I just put the studded shoulder pad on the right shoulder for one of my guys (since armour is often re-used and re-purposed, I figure this happens, at least once in a while), which allowed me to have a blank shoulder pad on the left to place my chapter badge:

Someone pointed out to me that the 6E C:SM has artwork for an Iron Hands or one of their successors with the studded shoulder on his right arm, so that configuration does indeed exist.

I still find it disgusting though (kidding).
