Shadespyre
Quite a simple question - I'm about to start painting some Rogue Trader period Mk VI marines with the studded left shoulder pad, where the heck should I put what markings? The modern codex style is to put the Chapter Badge on the left shoulder pad, not available in this case. The best I can think of is to either: 1 - leave off the tactical arrow and put the chapter badge on the right shoulder (as I recall this is how it used to be in 1987!) 2 - superimpose the chapter badge over the tactical arrow but I'd love to hear what other people have done to combat this! I'm aiming to try and make this a "modern" Space Marine force with old miniatures rather than recreate an RT army or embrace the current Heresy-era obsession. GrandMagnus
Go for nr. 2 and nr. 1. Mixing both together can give a good amount of variation. But mostly nr. 2 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285042-chapter-badges-and-unit-markings-on-mkvi-armour/#findComment-3556286 Share on other sites
deathspectersgt7
I put the Chapter symbol on the right pad sqd type on the grieves or a small version next to chapter symbol. Bryan Blaire
I put the Chapter symbol on the right pad sqd type on the grieves or a small version next to chapteor symbol. :tu: for putting the squad markings somewhere else Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285042-chapter-badges-and-unit-markings-on-mkvi-armour/#findComment-3556303 Share on other sites
ninjasuperspy
Most of the time I see people moving the markings to the grieves but you could put a banner (IE one of the tactical squad loincloth things) over the pad & put the marking on that. A homebrew version of this pad from the FW Red Scorps kit: http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/images/fw_sevrin_loth_shoulder_pad_10_large.jpg The Templars and Dark Angels kits do similar stuff as well. JeffTibbetts
Chapter badge always goes on the right shoulder for Mk. 6. Squad markings can be left off entirely or added to a knee or just about anywhere else, depending on chapter. I think it's fine to leave it off and that's what I do. Seleucus
This should give you an idea of how it was done: http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/4379/shoulderw.jpg Or this?: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qlqT8KeqqHg/UH68hnDUZQI/AAAAAAAAC5A/wZts_jYV9tY/s1600/rainbow+warriors.png And this?: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Onisuzume/Dark%20Angels/CrimsonFists01c.jpg And this one?: http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130915024115/warhammer40k/images/c/c7/Apothecaries_RT_era.jpg Yet another: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a118/Gagoc/Sources/RT_SalBadges.jpg More: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111011183605/warhammer40k/images/thumb/6/68/Early_SM_Diagram_WD_93.jpg/830px-Early_SM_Diagram_WD_93.jpg If you can find someone with the original ook (below), this would help: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b8/Rogue_trader_cover.jpg/200px-Rogue_trader_cover.jpg And this one (available - I think - for £20 at Black Library if you cannot find someone with a copy): http://www.blacklibrary.com/Images/Product/DefaultBL/xlarge/insignium-astartes.jpg This gives an idea of what the latter book has: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m150/Cpl_Saint/Ultramarines/pads.jpg But it has more without the rims on the shoulderpads. Brother Tyler
In truth, there are a lot of options open to you. The Forge World Imperial Armour books do a great job of showing the variety. You can put either squad or Chapter badges on the shoulder pads, then put the other on the chest, kneepad, greaves, whatever. You don't even need all of your battle-brothers to use the same pattern - some might have the Chapter badge on the shoulder pad and the squad badge on the kneepad/greave, while others might reverse that. Don't feel constrained to using a rigid pattern, and don't feel constrained to using a single older pattern that might be completely obsolete. Do whatever works for you. Surrender_Monkey
I put a big chapter icon on the right pad then paint a small squad marking in the corner. Shadespyre
Wow, that's a lot of ideas, very helpful. Thanks especially to Seleucus for the big pile of RT era art, this would all be easier if I could find my old books and WDs (which I am sure are in the loft somewhere!). I think a big Tactical arrow makes a nice backdrop for a chapter logo, but the other unit badges less so. Maybe moving that to the right knee would make good sense. Of course it would be easier to decide if I had actually nailed down a COLOUR, a NAME, or a BADGE for my chapter! Peredyne
On my Minotaurs army, I have a tac squad of all mk VI armor with the chapter badge on the right shoulderpad and the unit badge on the right leg at the knee. Kaedes Nex
Since Mk VI has no knee armor, how do you guys paint stuff on the knee? Kaedes Nex
So just sort of eyeball it and make it the same size as if the marine would have had a rounded knee guard? Shadespyre
I think that's the best option for me, if only because RT era minis tend to be a bit variable in design! There are now some mocked-up Tac-marines in my army thread (green link below) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285042-chapter-badges-and-unit-markings-on-mkvi-armour/#findComment-3556961 Share on other sites
Riconas
Personally, I just put the studded shoulder pad on the right shoulder for one of my guys (since armour is often re-used and re-purposed, I figure this happens, at least once in a while), which allowed me to have a blank shoulder pad on the left to place my chapter badge:http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/30/e35f.JPG Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285042-chapter-badges-and-unit-markings-on-mkvi-armour/#findComment-3570411 Share on other sites
Kaedes Nex
Someone pointed out to me that the 6E C:SM has artwork for an Iron Hands or one of their successors with the studded shoulder on his right arm, so that configuration does indeed exist. I still find it disgusting though (kidding).
