Robed Terminators

Recommended Posts

I have conducted a couple searches but have not been able to find any tutorials (or mention) on how to robe Terminators cry.gif

I am building a Space Hulk specific Death Wing force and I want to create Ezekiel in TDA as my Librarian.

Any tips, pointers, links, and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you Black Cohort, you are correct there are "robe" options in the DW Command set. It has options for the Terminators to be Death Wing Knights with tabard bodies. But I am wanting to create this guy in Terminator armour:

And as you can see, he has full robes, not just a tabard.

I am pretty confident with green stuff, I was kind of hoping to be able to sculpt the robes myself which is why I was looking for articles here.

I guess I will just have to collect a bunch of reference pics and give it a go myself. unsure.png

Do you guys feel that the full robes will not transfer well onto TDA? I was wondering this myself. Perhaps something more along the lines of what the DA veterans wear in which you can still see their legs would be better, or even replicating the style of robes worn by Azrael the Supreme Grand Master would be better.

Perhaps,

I am comfortable sculpting the robes on the upper body, it is just the legs that I am unsure of...... Past attempts have left them looking chunky and not cool at all.

These legs from Basicks are specifically for robed termies.:

Basicks is the former partner at Micro Arts Studio - he took the conversion parts with him when he set up alone.

They are good sculpts and fit well to termie torsos.

Not sure if this is a helpful comment what with Seleucus providing a link to some awesome robed terminator legs, but with the togas you might consider having them not cover the legs completely. They could just hang down one side, leaving most of the lower body uncovered.

I appreciate any comments Brother R.

I am torn between modelling a full closed leg robe or an open version. Closed robes seem to be reserved for power armour, and opened tabards and capes seem to be the norm for TDA. I am wondering if this is in part because the full leg robes do not look as good and/or are harder to sculpt...

I wanted to make as accurate a representation of Ezekiel as possible given that he will be in TDA. Perhaps a tabard and cloak will suffice and I am being too strict with myself....

I would hazard a guess it's so the 'terminator' shape is kept visible. I'm not too fond of those robed legs above for this reason. I think they loose the power and shape of the armour, which is the core essence of Terminators.

I illustrate this with Belial. Forget his strangely 2nd Edition pose for a moment. He has a tabard which fully covers his upper torso, a cloak and a hood. This conveys - at least to me - a sufficient amount of 'secretiveness'. It's like he's wearing a robe except for his legs. Yet by keeping his legs exposed he retains the classic Terminator look.

The way I'd think about such a conversion is this. You can have an exact replica of Ezekiel with Terminator instead of Power Armour. That makes me think 'Ezekiel in Terminator Armour'. Or you make him different whilst keeping the core of who he is, and that makes me think 'Ezekiel wearing Terminator armour'. I find this a little hard to explain, but the latter is cooler. It makes me wonder why he's shed his normal garb to wear Terminator armour. Why's he made the change? Who's he fighting? It's things like that that make a model for me.

And, besides, there are plenty of things about Ezekiel you can use beside his robes. His distinctive face mask and sword. His personalized banner. His keys and book. His traditional closed and wary stance (I don't think I've ever seen him in a 'fighting' pose). There is, doubtlessly, a secretive air about him and that is conveyed through his robes. But you can convey that in other ways, like Belial shows. Besides, if you took all those other things and put them on a terminator I'm sure he'd be unmistakable as anything save for Ezekiel.

All that said, if robes are really the only way you'll be happy with the model - go for it. No point starting a project you haven't got your full heart behind. Read up on some tutorials, maybe wait a bit until your confidence picks up and then sculpt/convert/kitbash! Whatever you do, I'll be interested to see the end results.

Here's a thread on this forum that might help:

This pic shows the robed legs I mentioned above:

That's all I can find at the mo.

If you need a template for robe shape: http://www.hobbyhottips.com/robes-hoods-template/

Then all you would need to do is move the robes around on the upper body and sculpt folds into them.  The robed legs Seleucus posted would aid in the lower half of the model, as well as providing sculpting clues for how to do the folds in the top half.

Hope that helps.

have you ever used heavy aluminum foil?  I use it for multiple things when building armor, was mostly making 1/35 scale, but it worked well for things like flags, coats, belts and damaged armor.  fairly easy to work with and cheap!

I have not used it or heard of it before. Thanks for the suggestion.
