JGeils81
Hey Guys, SO I read the entire rulebook .pdf and just ordered the dark vengeance(DV) set to start out. Have some paint questions. I have a ton of model paints from well, building models but I usually used Testors and Model Masters and they are enamels. I have some other paint, but its like craft/art paint that is acrylic. Will enamel paint work on these plastics/resins? Is the walmart type acrylic paint high enough quality to use? it comes in tubes, is thick and would need to be thinned quite a bit. I plan on using the DV set to learn the game part, and to practice building/painting/converting, before I buy anything else really. Thanks in advance guys, Jeremiah also, I'm always open to advice! Shadespyre
Yes, you can use enamels on plastics (I assume resins too) but it's very rare that anyone does so anymore (I know of one guy till painting Warhammer Empire stuff with them). This is mostly because acrylic paints are so much easier to use, being water based, and because the range of acrylics available is now at least as good as the enamels (whereas 30 years ago you never saw acrylic model paint), Some "craft" acrylics are okay on models, but the type you are describing really aren't. Some of the ones which come in 2oz flip top bottles are okay (Decor Art, Ceramcoat, Anita's, Plaid are ones I've used) but I've found it varies from colour to colour and they are best used for bases and scenery work, where they can be great value. Modern acrylic paints - and there's lots of choice now - are really very good, and I would recommend trying them out before deciding what route to go. Pick up just 4 or 5 basic colours and try painting a model with them. If you have a massive collection of enamels in suitable colours (not just tank / airplane camo paints like I had as a kid!) I can see the attraction of keeping on with them, but I'd recommend the change myself. JGeils81
most of mine are base colors, and military colors, olive drab, panzer gray, gunmetal etc. Ill find some acrylics to test out, having to use thinner for the paint and the brushes is definitely a minus to enamels. Thanks for the input! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285454-enamel-or-acrylic/#findComment-3565801 Share on other sites
Forté
Look for the Vallejo ranges of acrylics. Game colour is closest colour wise to GW stuff and the Model colour range is more the colours you're used to. Xenith
I would personally never use enamels, water based acrylics are just so much easier to work with.
