Horus Heresy: Cometh the Red Angel - Picture Heavy

After a long time of (me) planning it, me and my brother finally managed to start our Isstvan III campaign, and what better a way to start it than the Legendary Battle from the Betralyal book: Cometh the Red Angel.

Unfortunately while I've amassed quite a collection of Horus Heresy forces, I don't quite have the 5000 points of World Eaters that would be ideal for it, so we had to have some stand ins. Remembering, that Saul Tarvitz was with the World Eater Captain Ehrlen when Angron came down on Isstvan III, some loyalist Emperor's Children quickly  joined the play, and adding some Death Guard to the traitors, allowed us to have World Eaters on both sides. Because of this, we also decided that unlike the rules say, The Emperor's Children and World Eaters could join each other and benefit from their warlord traits for this scenario only.

The forces being used:

Five man Cataphractii Terminator squad

Ten man Tactical Squad with Bolters

Aegis Defence Line

Total 2000 points

The Mission:
For those who don't have the Betrayal book he objective of the mission is for each side to kill as many enemy units as possible, and for the loyalist to wound or kill Angron, and try to have more units left than the traitors at the end of the game. Traitors get extra points for killing the loyalist warlord (Saul Tarvitz in this case).

The Loyalist start anywhere on the board except near the edges, and traitors start with nothing on the table, instead moving in on the first turn. All traitor infantry may deep strike (on the first turn) and if they already could, they may also assault that turn.

With that let's get onto the actual battle.

Deployment:

The Loaylist take cover in the ruins, forming a rough ellipse around the center of the table. Heavy weapon squads take commanding positions in the top floors of the buildings. Saul Tarvitz and Captain Ehrlen lead the forces from a ruined manufactorium. As the loyalists hunker down in the rubble, the air is filled with the sound of roaring dropships.

Loyalist Deployment

Traitors turn one:

The dropships discorge their deadly cargo around the loyalist, most units electing to deploy at a safe distance and cross the rest of the journey on foot. Several units deep strike closer, but as the traitor armies are still deploying the loyalists strike the first blow. The Death Guard flamer unit drops too close to the loyalist World Eaters and are immediately cut down. The Emperor's Children autocannon squad's sergeant also directs fire with his augury scanner, targeting the deep striking meltgagunner squad but to no effect.

The traitors advance

Angron & Rampagers spearhead the advance in the Spartan. The infantry advance up the middle and open fire on the Rapiers but do nothing.  On the traitor's right flank the meltaguns vaporize two terminators, while the jetbikes and Lascannon squads  kill three men from Empero's Children autocannon squad. Finally the tanks open up, the predator killing two members of the loyalist lascannon squad and the spartan fells one Palatine blade.

The sudden onslaught of the traitor forces is too much for the Emperor's Children heavy support squads, and they both retreat.

Finally, a world Eater Assault that dropped behind the manufactorium find that they don't have the necessary momentum to make it into a close combat.

Loyalist turn one:

The Autocannon squads regroup, but being far closer to the front the lascannons try to put more distance between themselves and the enemy. Captain Ehrlen rushes out of the manufactorum, eager to shed the blood of his former brothers and the Emperor's Children assault squad joins them. Demanding vengeance the terminators move towards Meltagun squad and Palatine Blades move out of cover planning to use their meltabombs against Spartan.

Ehrlen' attacks his former brothers

The assault squad fires their pistols and throw grenades killing one of their foes, while Ehrlen kills two with his grenade. The Emperor's Childrena Tactical squad also pours their fire to help but it achieves nothing, whilst their World Eater comrades unleash the fury of the legion against their treacherous brothers advancing from the other side, but only succeed in downing one. The Rapiers target the Predator taking off a hull point of.

In a stunning display of discipline the meltagunners of the World Eater Legion hit the charging terminators multiple times, and only the durability of Cataprachtii plate ensures they reach their target (3 melta & one bolter hits, one terminator dies). The terminators charge in, killing two, and their remaining foes flee. Near the manufactorium Both Captain Ehrlen and the Emperor's Children assault squad reach their target. Ehrlen accepts a challenge from the World Eaters sergeant but fails to kill him (6 attacks with Paragon Blade!). World Eaters kill one of the Emperor's Children and they kill two in return, but the World Eaters hold their ground.

The Prefector of the Palatine Blades manages to plant his meltabomb but it fails to harm the venerable tank.

The surviving terminators charge their former brothers

Traitor turn two:

Spartan tank shocks the Rapiers who turn their tails and flee, and for a good reason. As the assault ramp lowers Angron, the Red Angel, comes forth, followed by ten bloodthirsty Rampagers.  Angron immediately goes after the fleeing Rapiers and the rampagers decide to chase the lascannons. The Dreadnought closes in on the loyalistWorld Eater tactical squad, as does the traitor World Eater tactical squad. Unwilling to be left behind, the Death Guard pick up the pace and run towards their enemies.

The traitors press their attack...

...and the Red Angel cometh

The Predator fires at the Emperor's Children tactical squad in the manufactorium, killing three. Dreadnought shoots at the loyal World Eaters but does nothing and the Spartan kills another tactical marine. On the right flank the World Eaters lascannons make easy kills of the Palatine Blades out in the open, and the rest on the flank pours their fire against the terminators, killing one.

Revving their chainaxes the World Eaters charge in. Angron catches the rapiers and butchers them in the blink of an eye. The lascannons shoot one of the rampagers before being overwhelmed, and the dreadnought kills three of his former brothers, but under the company standard the men refuse to run. Behind the ruined manufactorium Ehrlen again fails to slay his opponent (eleven attacks total!), but at least the opposing sergeant fares no better. However, the Emperor's Children kill all the other World Eaters. This is too much for the sergeant who turns to flee, but is quickly cut down.

The Assault Squads clash

Loyalist turn two:

Ehrlen and the assault squad take cover next to the manufactorium. Saul Tarvitz abandons his commanding view of the battlefield and joins the World Eaters command squad as they rush towards the approaching Death Guard. The remaining terminator sergeant decides to go after the Jetbikes.

The command squad and the Emperor's Children tactical squad both fire at the Death Guard, killing two, one of whom carried the legion vexilla. The autocannons fire at the Jetbikes but the sky hunters prove too nimble targets, and the terminator sergeant fares no better.

The traitors right flank

Putting the bolter aside he charges the jetbikes, but to his surprise they cut him down with their blades before he  even gets to swing his power axe.

Saul Tarvitz and the command squad charge the Death Guard, and the company standard beares is cut down by a hail of bolter fire (They took two wounds from over watch fire. Not wanting to lose the closest model, the wounds were both look out sir'ed on the Standard Bearer, who then failed both armour saves!) The Death Guard centurion challenges the chosen with the Power Axe. Saul Tarvitz kills one of the Death Guard, while the chosen with a lightning claw kills four traitors . The other chosen wounds the centurion three times with his power axe, but thanks to reftractor field he only loses one. However, he also fails to kill his opponent, and without the the vexilla to bolster their morale the Death Guard elect to retreat. The command squad fails to catch them (the Death Guard roll 6, vs 1 and another 1 from crusader, and despite the close distance to the table edge, they stay on the board.)

Dreadnought kill three more of his brothers, and cuts down the rest as they try to escape(sergeant's meltabombs failed again).

The loyalist command squads figths with all their fury...

And the Death Guard flee before them

Traitor turn three:

The Death Guard rally and the World Eaters tactical squad moves to charge the command squad. Angron runs towards the Emperor's Children in the manufactorium, accompanied by the Dreadnought. Rampagers gets back onboard the Spartan and race towards the action. On the right, the Jetbikes move forward and finish off the autocannon squad.

The loyalist numbers grow few

The tactical squad rush the few loyalist, the sergeant shouting  a challenge which is accepted by the  chosen with the lightning claw. Saul kills one of the oncoming World Eaters, while the World Eaters centurion does nothing, and the rest of the squad only manage to(30 attacks!) wound Saul. The chosen fails to kill the sergeant with his lightning claws, and gets power axe to the face for it. The other chosen kills one, and the combat continues.

Loyalist turn three:

The tactical squad unleashes the full fury of their bolters at Angron, wounding him once. Captain Ehrlen & the Assault Squad move trough the manufactorium and charge the dreadnought, but fail to hit it with their meltabombs, though the dreadnought is caught by surprise and also does nothing.

Saul Tarvitz is completely focused on defending himself, but the remaining chosen kills one of the traitorous World Eaters. The World Eaters then cut Tarvitz down,  and finally the sergeant finishes the last chosen.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Battle%20Reports/Sauldies_zps97c9f9cd.jpg

Saul Tarviz and the Command Squad are finally overwhelmed

Traitor turn four:

The tactical squad and Rampagers both charge the Emperor's Children Assault Squad, while Angron goes after the tactical squad.

Ehrlen challenges the World Eaters centurion, wounding him once (with murderous strike) but the reftractor field saves his life. In retaliation the centurion does nothing. The Emperor's Children kill one man from the World Eaters tactical squad, before being wiped out to a man. Resolving to fight to the death Captain Ehrlen stands his ground.

Angron tears through four of the Emperor's Children, but despite facing a primach they hold as well.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Battle%20Reports/Lastmoments_zps8a8988cc.jpg

The last loyalists try to sell their lives as dearly as possible

Loyalist turn four:

Angron kills the remaining Emperor's Children, while Captain Ehrlen decapitates his opponent, as the other World Eaters watch the duel.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff46/Gorzag_bucket/Horus%20Heresy/Battle%20Reports/Erlenfightson_zpsc72c750d.jpg

Ehrlen stands alone

Traitor turn five:

With no space for Angron to charge in, and not wanting to watch as Ehrlen cuts down all his opponents one by one (12 models capable of accepting challenges left) the traitors unsportingly turn his challenge down, and the captain is overwhelmed by the traitors.

As the dust clears, not a single loyalist remains on the field. The traitors have made a successful planetfall, though Horus will surely not be pleased with his brother's impetuous action...

Final victory points:

Traitors 13 (eleven units killed, loyalist warlord killed)

Loyalists 5 (Angron wounded, four units killed.

So the traitors start the campaign with a massacre, but to be honest my brother was having a terrible time with his dice and also was more than a little limited in force selection by the scenario, so next game will probably be very different. I'll try make more battle reports as our campagin progresses. And finally sorry about the quality of some of the pictures. I forgot to charge my camera's battery and the first pics had to be taken with my phone instead. And even as I got the battery charged, I was a bit too eager to get on with the battle to pay proper attention to the camerawork.
