The Red Wolves of Hakon

Hey everyone, I'm doing a khorne-touched space wolf army (using the SW codex, hence posting this here), and decided that I should do one of those army blog things to keep me motivated.

Here is the background I wrote for the army:

Hakon had his first vision during his initiation. He was given the Canis Helix and lost consciousness. He found himself in the chill wilds of Fenris, but he was not yet awake. Before him was an impossibly huge cave. He went inside, feeling in his blood that his destiny as a space wolf lay within.

There he found a massive wolf, its fur shades of brown and copper and dried blood, lying atop a mountain of skulls as big as the world.

Behind him, Hakon heard warriors approaching. They were human, like him, and yet he sensed that he had greater kinship with the beast that lay before him. He turned, meaning to fight the intruders, and then awoke.

Since that day, Hakon has carved his legend in destiny's leathery hide as a proud son of Russ. He earned honours beyond those of any warrior his age, and had the acclaim of his lord. He earned the epithet 'the savage' in those days for his unrelenting and straight-forward approach to killing.

Yet, it was not enough. The praise of his fellows left him cold, and Hakon felt hollow and unfulfilled. The vision he had had during the Trial of Morkai haunted his waking hours as well as his sleep. Sometimes he would dream of the red wolf, but he only ever caught a glimpse. Those glimpses were all that kept him going, the only thing that gave him a sense of place in the world.

He found that he dreamed most often after he had killed, and so he started yearning for the chance to spill blood. He volunteered for the most dangerous missions, and always threw himself into the fray with reckless abandon. His lord applauded him for his valour, and saw his recklessness as natural for a blood claw.

Then, one fateful battle, Hakon's pack was killed to a man by a worshipper of the ruinous powers.

Hakon was the only survivor, and swore the oath of the lone wolf as was expected of him.

In spite of all odds, Hakon managed to kill the Slaaneshi chaos lord who had butchered his packmates, and upon his triumphant return he was elevated to his lord's Wolf Guard.

The recklessness and fury in him was never quite stilled, however. With the passing of decades of warfare, the dreams became ever strong, as did Hakon's need to be with the red wolf.

He came to believe that the red wolf wished for him to find it, that it was real and was waiting for him in some forgotten corner of creation.

War broke out close to Fenris, an industrial world tried to secede from the Emperor's light. Hakon's great company were sent by Logan Grimnar, along with two others, to put an end to the rebellion. It was a war the likes of which Hakon had a fought a hundred of, but this time he was given his own command. Hakon was popular among the men of his great company, and had made a name for himself beyond as well.

So it was that when he started disobeying orders to hold or retreat, when he started throwing himself and his men at the enemy without relenting or heeding the wishes of his lord, the wolves under his command followed him on his ruinous path to a man.

Hakon and his group of bloodied followers stalked off into the night and broke off all ties to their chapter. They have been sighted several times since, always in the most dire and grim of war zones. They have been altered and swollen, clearly touched by the perditious influence of chaos.

The Red Wolf leads Hakon ever on, through an endless procession of wars. Hakon and his band keep faith, for they know that with each kill they come closer to their god's bony throne.

One day, they know, they will reach it, and then fight to the death for the right to be forever by the Red Wolf's side, against each other and all other challengers who might appear.

I don't have a lot of miniatures painted yet, just the beginnings of one Wolf Guard pack.

I'm not a very good painter, but I'm feeling pretty good about how they came out. They'll be getting some of the new GW blood effects put on them before I call them done, and they're getting a snow base.

I've got an order coming in, enough bits to make ten wolf guard terminators and Hakon, who will count as Logan Grimnar. I'm also going to be adding some drop pods, a land raider crusader, and thunderwolf cavalry.

Comments and criticism on my writing and painting appreciated!

I'm using the SW codex though, they're chaosy Space Wolves, not wolfy Chaos Marines. I really do feel it makes more sense to have this thread here, but if the mods disagree they should of course just move it.

As for spot colours, I'm a bit skittish about trying pack markings because my painting is kind of awful, especially when I don't have a clear line or border to work with.

I usually mess up anything even slightly resembling freehand.

That excuse doesnt wash around here (I know as I've tried it myself). You might have gone on the heretics path but you were once VI legion and we back from nothing or no-one. Seriously though you could a simple red/black jagged design ( ^^ ) ( ^ ) or even half and half. Red/black for GH's, white/black for LF's and yellow/red for BC's or in my case blue as yellow is horrible to work with IMO. Hope this helps and dont be so hard on yourself your painting seems pretty good to me,we dont allwork for the 'Eavy Metal team thumbsup.gif

i am in agreement with the idea of some spot color. and since i also play blood angels when i see red i want to put some green spot colors on it.  i stole this one from dakkkadakka but i noticed you hadnt done the lenses yet consider some cool green glowing lens, will give an added piece of color, and  plays right into the wheel house not being the neatest painter.

I might try that, yeah, though not all of the helmets have obvious lenses. I'll experiment with drybrushing some bright green on spare helmets for some glowy effect.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm also thinking that getting the snow basing done might offset the deep red some.

That's the idea! I want to keep them tied to the wolfy symbolism pretty strongly, rather than just go 'they're CSM who have some wolf bits on them'. I think the chaos gods would probably have a ton of different names, and present themselves differently to people based on their culture and personal obsessions, rather than just using the one name and form the fluff usually gives them. The warp isn't a physical place, it's a world made entirely of ideas and thoughts (recent books have given us *maps* of the warp, *MAPS*).

I got my terminators in today and figured I'd show some WiP pictures. Apologies for the crappy photos, my camera just would. not. focus.

I'm going to finally get to trying the glowing green eyes for spot colour soon. I'm also going to paint the swords to look more icey and glowy too, since they're supposed to be Frost Blades/Axes.

Its ok to live here.

Great minis and concept! I guess having a 13th Company or Lost Company is a safe bet for those who like their wolves to be allot more savage looking. But having khorne-touched space wolf army is another thing.

Now I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but you could consider that even a radical or dark saga Wolf Lord was a little more psychopath that the other wolves. Maybe exiled for being to extreme in matters of the murdermake. It's always cool to have good guys looking and at times acting like the anti-hero. Something to keep in mind. Either way, looking forward to seeing your painted work completed.
