Eisenhorn31388
Hello all, new IG player here. I am currently building up a small list of guardsmen to run along side my Imperial Fists as either objective takers or meat shields. I've always wanted to start a guard army to have a huge number of models and tanks, but obviously that is an expensive endeavor, so I am limited to allies at this time. I currently have: -Company Command Squad (unbuilt) -Lord Commisar (Gaunt model) -30 guardsmen with various weapons (2 grenade launchers, flamer, plasma gun, sniper rifle, 2 lascannons) -10 guardsmen (unbuilt) -3 Chimeras What do all recommend I do with what I have? I've got no spare funding right now for any new models. I was thinking running a CCS w/ master of ordinance, a squad of vets/stormtroopers (ST would deep strike), an infantry platoon with platoon command and two infantry squads all in the chimeras. Would this be the best build I can get with what I have? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/ Share on other sites
lionofjudah
With your available models I would take CCS with LC, sniper and PG- higher BS PCS with flamers and commissar in a chimera 2 inf squads gl in chimera Vets- here's a great vet squad- take barker with a HB(I use a marine with HB), 3 plasma guns and the lascannon- they infiltrate and can unleash an inordinate amount of high bs fire into a rear area of your enemies lines. May be a suicide squad but they will earn their points if used properly. Think with some boys from marines and general converting skills you should have no problem making this with what you have. midjithero
My first IG army I had was huge and I ebayed it about 4 yrs ago to clear up some space. When I wanted to play IG again, I started out the same as you, start small and build it up. The way I ran my allied IG unit to start was: CCS (lascannon) vet squad (3plasma, chimera) vet squad (3melta, Vendetta) Basilisk You could do something similar... CCS - LC, Plasma Vet squad - 3 plasma, Chimera Vet Squad - 3 plasma/melta, Chimera [this squad depends on your opponent] This would help you claim objectives, be mobile, and offer a little annoyance to your opponent with the special weapons. You could also go something like... CCS - 4 Plasma, chimera Marbo PCS - 4 flamers, chimera Infantry Squad - Plasma Infantry Squad - Plasma Hvy Weapons Team - 3x Lascannon Commissar If you(or friends) have extra bitz, you can make your own Hvy Weapon team. Tactic for this kinda load out would be CCS/PCS roam around in chimeras giving orders to the Infantry Blob(with Commissar). You can also convert your own Marbo model which is a pain for enemy Terminators. The biggest suggestion is to utilize your bitz, and also get magnets if you can! It takes a bit longer to build your units, but will give you more versatility when making lists Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/#findComment-3567189 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Ah, the sons of Dorn standing together with the hammer of the Emperor - could there be a more fitting alliance in His service? Welcome to the Guard noble Imperial Fist, I think your yellow will complement the fatigues quite nicely :D Looks to me like you're already the makings of a few armoured fist squads to support your Marines. Aside from the additional durability and fire power a Chimera provides it also helps you keep the squad within cheaper and yet more effective. Guardsmen bundling out of a Chimera to rapid fire and flame the enemy can be pretty effective for the cost and it will let your Fists do what they do best and reduce enemy vehicles and buildings to wrecks and rubble. You have a good plan for your models, I'd go for Veterans over Stormies. The additional special weapons and BS lets them do a fair bit more than a humble Infantry Squad - especially from a Chimera. Stormies are cool but they are unfortunately overpriced and would be competing with what your Marines can do better (Sterns spring to mind). It's also a great start to a stand alone Guard army so you're already at the stage where you can think about armour :) Have you thought about how you'll fit the army in? Are they a PDF the Fists have come to support? What about colour schemes? Eisenhorn31388
Thanks for the replies guys, anything helps when starting a new army with as many choices as IG. I think for now I'm gonna run two infantry squads and the PCS in the three chimeras and have the CCS sit back and drop pie plates. The left over guys will be the vets and I'd like to have them outflank. As for the fluff behind it, I've always loved the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, so I'm thinking that my IF (though I know they don't normally travel far from home) will have been summoned to retake a hive world in the Sabbat Worlds and the guard regiment was called in to support the IF because it is their homeworld. I really would like for the color scheme to incorporate red somehow. I know that most IG schemes are camo or the like, but I'm thinking fully red tanks and the infantry will be black with red armor plates. Still toying with that though. Red is a bit much to take but I like the combo of red and yellow. (hence why I play Blood Angels as well!) WarriorFish
There are some nice red camouflage patterns you can do, like Mars pattern for example but maybe something a bit more normal would be better (unless you have something other than grass matts to play on!)? Perhaps a desert scheme with some red on, or with the colours moved along the spectrum closer to red? Try the B&C's Imperial Guard painter to experiment if you haven't already Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/#findComment-3567755 Share on other sites
hendrik
perhaps something like this http://www.swapmeetmodels.co.uk/images/htmlarea/tanks/011004_tank_leopard_red.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/#findComment-3568151 Share on other sites
Eisenhorn31388
I like that tank, but this begs the obvious question: How in the world to I paint that? Coming from C:SM, all I know are solid colors. And I think I have decided on standard tan/khaki color with red armor plates. Eisenhorn31388
Ok, so I think I may be on to something with an idea I just had about where my guard regiment came from. I'm thinking of something like this: The Imperial Fists are called in to liberate a world under fire from the Legions of Chaos, but realizing that there is no hope for salvation, the IF take all loyal, surviving residents of the planet off of the dead world. Having all of these citizens of the Imperium aboard their flying fortress Phalanx, a new guard regiment is founded, not having any home world. I'm just having trouble thinking of a fitting name because everything I think of sounds like a great name for a tank or tank unit. "Armor of Phalanx or "Hammer of Phalanx" sound great for tanks or units of tanks. Any thoughts? hendrik
citizens of phalanx? due to them now residing in the phalanx? although they would normally be enrolled in the phalanx defense force (if it has one?) other than that it is "illegal" by decree of the high lords of terra that space marine chapters rule over imperial guard regiments, due to "splitting" the forces in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the horus heresy. The two armies can work together, but on paper they will never be a regiment belonging to the imperial fists Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/#findComment-3568646 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
The cream/lighter colour with red armour is the most common "red scheme" I've seen, so that certainly works. I wouldn't give up on camouflage just yet though, it's really not as hard as you think. It's just a matter of deciding what colours to use and the general shape then experimenting a bit - we can help you out with that if you want to give it a go :) Like hendrik said having them on the Phalanx itself is taking it a little too far but there's nothing stopping the Guard regiment from taking an informal name in honour of the Fists or working together with them regularly (e.g. 313th Eisenhorn "Dorn's Hammers"). You can have the armies closely linked without breaking any of the in universe lore, for example having the Fists keeping a representative with them and helping with training. That also means you can bend the laws in your fluff too. Who's to say the representative doesn't have a say behind the closed doors of the regimental command bunker? ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285518-starting-ig-for-allies/#findComment-3568653 Share on other sites
