Gundam Titans

Recommended Posts

I've been watching Gundam again and it occurred to me it'd be pretty cool to field a mobile suit.  Only problem is that I know next to nothing about Gunpla. Anyone know of Gundam or similar models that would work well as Imperial Titans?

I'd been looking at Tieren and Zaku, but most of the ones available are a bit small, as I've heard high grade is about 6" eg http://www.gundamplanet.com/hg-zaku-ii-big-gun-gundam-thunderbolt-ver.html

Equally, do you guys think that with the right paint job, some of the other models could look properly 'Imperial'?

I think it could be done, but you'd need some heavy conversion along with the right paint job. Most of the Gundams are too sleek and similar to the Tau's mecha aesthetics to blend in with an Imperial army. But as I said, I definitely think you could use one as the basis for something, so long as you weren't afraid to get your hands dirty with some pretty extensive modifications. Zaku is certainly a good starting point too.

I'd figure the Zaku / Zeon suits make a nice basic especially for corrupted titans. But I'd agree that the basic suits are too sleek compared to the STC imperial builds.

From the few model kits I've build from that range, I think they will be too small for 40 k scale games though. The most common are akin the 1/100 or 1/72 modeling scales . most 40k kits are close to the 1/48 scale ( which is why those tanks seem way to small for the models). But maybe there are bigger kits available? A dread knight size Zaku is certainly possible though.

How would you all advise doing the bulking up?

I've converted a few Tau Stealth Suits to Myrmidons by giving them a terminator powerfist, a necron head (skull), and covering them in imperial bling.  (funny what a particolored scheme does.)  So there army looks a bit more streamlined than straight imperium.

Also, it looks to me like the Heresy Era technology has a rounder, more Buck Rogers aesthetic to it.  Thoughts?

Personally, I think the Wing era Leo's wouldn't take much to convert to a space marine aesthetic.

As for heresy era, maybe. I think that's allowing for how some of the design of 40k was in the older models. Some of the newer  'heresy era' stuff is also very fond of raised trim and oversized rivets.  The classic, mk1 terminators were VERY round, but the 'heresey' terminators are very blocky and in some cases even loose the rounded shoulderpad look alltogether.
