Horus Heresy : Joining the Fray

Recommended Posts

Morning brothers!

A good friend and I will be pledging ourselves to 30k. He plays 40k Ravenguard and will be doing Salamanders. For my part I have 40k Blood Angels and even though I am in the process of converting a baneblade to a BA felblade, my choice is not set in stone.

Our play group contains a Night Lords, World Eaters and Ultramarines player. I will not play Space Puppies or Luna Wolves.

Any suggestions from the remaining legions available? I'd like to hear some thoughts on why you picked your legion, or why choose another in retrospect.

Thanks!

Loyalties mean little to me in the Heresy, I like legions with character. I like how Magnus was depicted. The Alpha Legion have been done well too.

Iron hands/warriors also have their appeal with their heavy metal.

This is why I am looking for input, I am pulled in too many directions.

Go for the III Legion! You want to be perfect, right?

I kid.

First Legion. Nothing more to be said. ph34r.png

If anything, I hate Fulgrim. Not because of the way he fell from grace, because it was somewhat tragic. Because he seemed to have no redeeming qualities to begin with...

Iron Warriors. As awesome as they are in 30k and look the biz in older armour marks. Rules are on the way in the next book (Extermination is it?) - just look at Heathens or Pyromancer they have some great Iron Warriors for the heresy for inspiration. I will be adding an Iron Warriors contingent to my Sons of Horus when their shiny things come out.

The Iron Hands! I mean, just look at these gorgeous models!!

It's always difficult to advise someone else, but at least I can give you the process I used and which helped me to finally decide just a few days ago.

First, I'm a loyalist. I haven't found a traitor's story that convinced me (EC being the worst...). And there's much more traitors on this board than loyalists, which is just another reason, if you want to be different (that's a big "if").

Half the job done :)

I wanted a legion which would permit hobby fun, with extra personnalisation. There are so many amazing threads here (1000H, Kapturowski's IH, Captain Semper's EC, nearly all NL ones, BCK, sorry for those I forget) it's impossible to resist being partofthecrew.

Long hesitation about Salamanders, but at last, I prefered a legion that played a role all along the HH, and preferably the siege of Terra, as it would be a tremendous fun to play parts of it.

So I chose White Scars :) Probably Blood angels will be part of it. There are drawbacks, the most important being I'll have to wait a long time for the book dealing with them, and even more for the models by FW.... When I see IH, I have a beginning of regret, but at least it's a great modelling challenge.

I agree with One-eye that currently the traitors have more following but I'd guess that this is because they have been supported more extensively so far by FW. As more books and loyalist minis are released I'm sure the loyalists will pick up.

Given that this is really a long term (and expensive) commitment it should be one from the heart. If your heart tells you Thousand Sons it may be worth waiting for an appropriate releases and not rush. Another think to consider is your ability to paint your minis well in certain colors - it is really rewarding to see a Heresy-era army fully painted. For me, who can't paint yellow if my life depended on it, I will always avoid Imperial Fists on these grounds alone (although I'm not particularly drawn to them anyway).

Conversly it may be a good opporunity to try a new colour theme and move away from your comfort zone. So say no to red armies (Thousand Sons, Word Bearers (Serrated Sun style), and Blood Angels. Try blue: Ultramarines! or the blue/green of the Alpha Legion... or Dark Angels. whistlingW.gif

Then there are the models themselves. Some will do the trick for you irrespective of everything else. The Emperor's Children did that for me - especially the Phoenix Guard that I have still to buy! But that was enough to give me the drive to tackle the purple - a colour I had no previous experience with whatsoever.

So a lot of decisions, regarding backround, models and painting challenges that only you can answer.

(btw the IH models are indeed gorgeous - except the dread that is a bit plain to me).

These are well constructed thoughts brothers.

I agree that I should stay away from colours I have already painted extensively (my Blood Angels are a homebrew white/red halves colour scheme, and I have painted an entire company!) So that would bar out the Scars, 1k Sons, Blood Angels. I could always do Word Bearers in their pre heresy grey, but that doesn't feel right.

So you hate Fulgrim, will not do Space Wolves or Luna Wolves(and I'm guessing Sons of Horus?), Salamanders, Night Lords, World Eaters and Ultramarines are already being done. And the Scars and KSons have similar colors and the BA are your 40K army.

That leaves the Alpha Legion, Dark Angels, Death Guard, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Iron Warriors, Raven Guard and maybe Word Bearers.

Hmm. Yeah, go for the Tenth. They gotz the big tankz.

What themes or units float your boat ?  What fluff or history, or future, or differences do you want?

I chose DG, I like the models, love the idea of using banned weaponry etc, mkIII armour, great fluff and models, so for me, DG is where it's at.  Like you, I also have a few legions I'd avoid.

Always the 10th: we've got guns, tanks, shock troops & mechanicum. What more could you want?

So I chose White Scars smile.png Probably Blood angels will be part of it. Well, if you find yourself pining for the 10th, you could always add an allied detatchment if you get bored of all that white.

I mean, for supplementary forces the Iron Hands are supremely fluffy. After Istvaan V, the Legion fractured - the Clan structure meant these huge formations (which could vary in size - I wouldn't be surprised if some were the size of 3-5 chapters) were loyal effectively only to themselves & Ferrus. With the Gorgon dead, they went their seperate ways - sure some went back to Medusa, but others went far and wide - some event went completely rogue. We've already seen some allied to the Ultras after the Massacre, some completely independant. Even pre-heresy, divisions of the 10th were used by shock troops by other Legions.

So Iron Hands allied with White Scars? Thats practically cannon. Plus the colour contrast would look awesome.

Just in case you need further convincing, here's a thread about how fluffy Scars & Hands are as allies: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285382-iron-hands-and-white-scars/

Not that I'm biased or anything whistlingW.gif
