There's no need to be brother were just lowly hobbyists

Okay so here's the alpha legion technique

ALPHA LEGION

1. AIRBRUSH WITH THINNED LEAD BELCHER/ IRON BREAKER (50/50 MIX)

2. AIRBRUSH FROM TOP OF MODEL WITH THINNED RUNFANG STEEL

3. MIX A LITTLE TAMIYA CLEAR GREEN WITH TAMIYA CLEAR BLUE (25/75 MIX) AND AIRBRUSH OVER THE MODEL IN 2 COATS

4. AIRBRUSH ARMOUR PANELS WITH TAMIYA CLEAR BLUE. BLENDING FROM MIDDLE OF FIGURE DOWN, SO THE STRONGEST BLUE COLOUR IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PANNELS

5. AIRBRUSH FROM THE MIDDLE UPWARDS WITH TAMIYA CLEAR GREEN

6. USING AN AIRBRUSH BLEND A HIGHLIGHT ON THE HIGHEST PANNELS (HEAD, SHOULDER PADS, TOP OF BACKPACK) WITH RUNEFANG STEEL WITH A TINY AMOUNT OF LOTHERN BLUE, EXTREMELY THINNED DOWN.

7. APPLY THINNED COAT OF TAMIYA CLEAR BLUE OVER THE HIGHLIGHT AND BLEND INTO THE SURROUNDING AREA.

8. USING A BLUE GLAZE, DRAG DOWN THE WHOLE MODEL ALLOWING IT TO SETTLE IN THE DEEPEST AREAS.

9. SILVER – BASECOAT WITH LEADBELCHER

10. WASH WITH NULN OIL

11. HIGHLIGHT WITH LEADBELCHER IN STRIKING MOTIONS TO CREATED CHIPPED AND WEATHER APPEARANCE

12. HIGHLIGHT WITH IRONBREAKER

I emailed them a while back

Oh man I got that same scheme when I asked them and it threw me for a loop. I don't even have an airbrush (wife would probably kill me) or the techniques & experience necessary to make that process happen with the multiple highlights & mixtures of various Tamiya colors. I've been experimenting with Sotek Green + Various Washes + Guilliman Blue glaze & I think I'm getting close to something usable though. What I'd really like is to figure out how with Hawk Turquoise & some washes this person is able to do their Alphas because I really like the blue they've got:

I still need to go get some Clear Green though, even if only for Auspex screens & so forth.

Here's Alan Blighs method if your interested:

Hi there, bearing in mind that I am no painter of any great ability and i have no doubt there are better ways, here was my method To get the blue armour -black undercoat, then a layers of a gunmetal/dark steel colour of your choice followed by some fairly heavy layers of strongly pigmented blue ink or blue glaze with a light spray of matt varnish between ink layers (this is an old trick i was told to get better deep colours from layers of inks without them blending), then a black wash to bring it together as i wanted a somewhat battle-worn look. I have a tendency to use a mix of all sorts of inks, including artists inks. Hope that’s of some help, Alan.

I use a mix of Sotex Green, temple guard blue, and purple, blue and green washes. Here's an example of something I painted last summer:

Temple Guard Blue eh? That's interesting, I might have to go grab some of that. I've been looking at Vallejo Metallic Medium as well and wondering what impact that would have on a base color.

Vallejo Metallic Medium gives the base color a pearlescent finish when combined with it.  It is also a bit thick when compared to other additives.  You would need to add a thinning agent to the paint as well as the Metallic Medium to get the desired effect.  You might want to check out the Vallejo Model Air range for a metallic blue if you wanted to go that route.  They are already quite thin and have a metallic/shiny finish that you can alter with various inks and clear coats.
