henrywalker
believe it or not i'm planning to write a university paper comparing the fluff's depiction of norse mythology through space wolves to Snorri of Iceland's depiction of norse mythology. You'd be surprised how similar they are. Anyway i want to know who actually came up with the space wolves and first wrote their fluff. anyone know? Grotsmasha
IIRC, it was the 2nd Ed. Codex that really brought this identity to the fore, I'd suggest starting there. Valerian
The original Space Wolves of the early Rogue Trader Era were very similar to the Space Marines of any other Chapter. Initially, there were no separate army lists, but a single general list to be used for all Marines. The Space Wolves got a specific list tailored to the Chapter in the "Book of the Astronomican", published in 1988, which was the first general supplement produced for the game. That list, too, was not too much changed, and looked nothing like the Space Wolves as we know them now. That transformation occurred very late in the Edition, in December 1992, when US White Dwarf 156 was published, which included the revised/new details about the history and structure of the Space Wolves. White Dwarf 156 included all of the background material (or "fluff"), while White Dwarf 157 included the army list and introduced the now-famous special characters (such as Logan Grimnar, Ragnar Blackmane, and Njal Stormcaller). The background material first revealed in White Dwarf 156 has been revised and recycled over the years and included again in each release of a new edition of the game. The original authors of this material were Bill King, Andy Chambers & Jes Goodwin. Valerian
It is one of the examples provided on page 12 of the 2e Codex, but there is no additional information provided on that particular totem (unlike the symbols of the Blackmane, the Thunderwolf, and Morkai, as well as the Wolf that Walks the Stars that get a small snippet).
