wise_crak
Hey guys, i am thinking this would be a good way to run a trio of flyers: stormtalon 1 with skyhammer launcher stormtalon 2 with lascannon storm raven with multi melta and lascannons my thinking on this is the talons can take out any threat from air to ground based targets while the raven can deliver its cargo using its las-cannons along the way melta any unit upon dropping off its cargo. in my mind (I havent tested or played this idea yet) this could be a really good tactic! what you think? discuss! GodEmperorOfMankind
GW think so, you can take it as a battle formation: http://www.blacklibrary.com/games-workshop-digital-editions/Dataslate-Adeptus-Astartes-Storm-Wing.html Also if you run that formation the raven gets a bonus to targeting ground units Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285661-could-this-be-a-good-way-to-run-flyers/#findComment-3570176 Share on other sites
TheSauce
I've had some good luck running the Storm Wing formation myself. I find it a little hard to justify anything but the skyhammer's on the Storm Talons, though. That S7 Ap4 matches up well with the S6 Ap4 of the assault cannon for lots of anti infantry/light armor shots. Also, I continue to preach the use of hurricane bolters on Stormravens. For a relatively small investment of points, you get about a full tactical squad's worth of bolter fire (6 Twin-linked bolters). And, while you lose chapter tactics (only matters if you're playing Iron Hands), a BS5 stormraven with pinning is nothing to laugh at, because it means that your twin-linked stuff will almost never miss, and your missiles will also be super reliable. And you can pin two units a turn with POTMS! wise_crak
thanks for the input guys! is that dataslate worth the money? I saw it and unsure of the perks so didn't want to pay for it. I can only imagine how brutal an Iron Hands Stormraven could be! Stickeh
If you take the Storm Wing data slate they don't benefit from the main army chapter tactics, as they're a pseudo-allies slot. Worth considering if you were dead set on using IH tactics because of the Stormraven. GodEmperorOfMankind
Well it lets you take two talons as escorting craft for your raven, and gives your raven BS5 as long as there's still a talon around, plus as Stickeh says, they come as a seperate detachment so no Chapter tactics, but also don't take up your 3 FA slots ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285661-could-this-be-a-good-way-to-run-flyers/#findComment-3571395 Share on other sites
wise_crak
so it sounds like its totally worth paying the two pound for it then! and considering it doesnt take up any slots just makes it sound even better! BS5 with las-cannons on the turret sounds pretty dangerous! so this data sheet with this load out would be super effective? wisecrak Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285661-could-this-be-a-good-way-to-run-flyers/#findComment-3572515 Share on other sites
Stickeh
Might be worth looking at the new tyrannic war veteran dataslate. One formation is Cassius, Tyrannic war veterans (sternguard with only hellfire special ammo but slightly cheaper) and 0-6 Stormtalons. The Stormtalons get infiltrate, allowing then to start on the table, and also get a special rule that let's all tyrannic war vets ignore cover against that unit if the talons hit with anything in the shooting phase. Ishagu
I run two Talons with Las Cannons and a Stormraven with MM, Las Cannon and Hurricane Bolters. The HBs on the Raven are a must! As it can cover ground quickly it allows you to kill light infantry guarding objectives late game. SyNidus
That's an interesting idea, though personally I like to have TLAC for my stormraven because it means I have more versatility. Gideon999
I have had good success without the hurricanes, but with a typhoon launcher. About the same points but allows the flexibility of longer range, frag and krak missiles for better flexibility.
