U.S. Army WW2 paint scheme IG

Hey all. I'm starting a fluffy IG Cadian ally for my ultramarines, and eventually plan to make it it's own stand alone army after the new codex. I'm thinking a unit of 3 Leman Russ, 2-3 Valkyrie/ Vendettas, a manticore, commissar Yarrick as my HQ and am waiting to see what the codex brings for troops and elites. Any advice or experiences I'd appreciate hearing.

I thought I was being original with this, but the more I Google it, the more I'm seeing it's been done to death for Germans, Russians and Japanese themes. But.. When I think of a Leman Russ, all I can think of is that old 80's movie "Tank" which featured a Sherman Tank.

I tried painting my Commissar Yarrick with Caliban Green, but it doesn't look right to me. I painted my Chimera with Rustoleum camouflage paint, which says it's okay for plastic. Looks more appropriate.

Any advice on colors from the more experienced guardsmen/women out there?

at least one or two platoons - these babies will be your staple against almost all things. as you are taking Yarrick as your HQ, platoons will give you the opportunity to issue orders via your platoon command squad (PCS), HWTs will enable you to pour an unforgiving amount of firepower into your enemy, SWS can be tailored to whatever you want (i'd suggest as you're aiming for a USA WW2 scheme-theme, maybe at least one team of snipers to disrupt the enemy and force morale checks when they take even just one casualty), while your good ol' fashioned infantry squad will give you the chance to cover the field in boots. they can go and do their own thing, or combine into a blob squad and march on in force.

as for camo schemes i honestly don't have an answer - its something i haven't thought about. i did a google search for you though and here are the results:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ww2+us+camo&rlz=1C1CHFX_enGB530GB530&espv=210&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=NBrXUvXOIYSAhAf5y4CwCQ&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1517&bih=741&dpr=0.9

hope this helps and good luck with your endeavors.

i honestly believe yarrick costs way too many points for what he'll bring to the table. also look for flames of war tutorials on how to paint american tanks/infantry!

also note that a large part of the american forces(or forces in general) didn't wear patterned clothing. here's an example of what the airborn uniform looked like:

conversion wise i would try to shave off the shoulderpads and file/resulpt them into just normal sleeves and use some american helmets on the models

Agreed, a good number of Guardsmen is what makes a Guard army as they provide you with lots of options and a solid core. Then you can just add special and heavy weapons as it suits you.

Regarding colour schemes Flames of War have a nice US paint box that I use for some of my camouflage colours, that should pretty much cover all your colours! If I remember right it also has a little painting guide on which might be useful :)

Removing should pads will be a lot of work, so I'd suggest you think about how much time you want to invest in all those Guardsmen first. For the scheme itself, looking at hendrik's first picture I reckon painting them that lighter colour would look good, and the darker/green helmet colour would work well on the armour I feel while still retaining a clear resemblance to their inspiration. Even more so if you adopt US Army markings etc on vehicles!

As for Yarrick he is expensive, but having played against him enough times I can say he's a pain in the arse to deal with!

Conversion wise I would recommend looking at Victoria miniatures forearms without shoulder pads. Flames of war paint sets are awesome US olive drab is pretty much dead on. The battlefront painting guides are chock-full of great tips and information. Looking forward to seeing your progress man

Also go to the ammo bunker website look in the 40 K painting area and look for a guy named big will check out his MerciAn lancers...

Thanks for all the input ! Plenty to think about for sure!

I've since made a deal with a friend for his realm of battle game board and his guard stuff, which included a fully painted Russ.

The downside is it's not the scheme I'm thinking, but it does remind me of the battle across the Sahara. But my chimera is already that camo green.

I'll post pics as I'm able... If that's cool with the admins. I still have to read that part of the rules.

you could try to remove the paint using simple green, motor oil, whatever, there are a dozen articles on how to remove paint from a model.

posting pictures is most definetly fine! in fact, i've heard the commissar puts a bolt in your head if you never post any WIP pictures! better not take that risk son! ;)

don't feel bad about your painting skills! thruth be told, i find tank easier to paint then infantry, and other find it the other way around.

Anyway, how to solve your problem?

Don't, imperial regiments get thrown together all of the time. remember, only a rare few regiments actually get replacements. most regiments will just be thrown together to form a new, combined regiment. your regiment could be one  of those regiments, the stubborn tankcrew refusing to repaint their beloved leman russ.

While I agree the tank looks good I'd argue that it's a paint job done well rather than a good paint job if you know what I mean. It's a nice colour scheme with attention paid to transfers and some weathering but the methods used to do them are not advanced - I should know I recognise them well enough! laugh.png

I think you can do just a good a job as him. A bit of dry brushing here and there, and attention to some chipping and you've pretty much done all that he has. Given a choice between the best painted model in the World and an identical model I painted I would pick my own model every time! So don't discount yourself yet, a bit of experimentation and you'll be surprised what you can do.

With guard, don't spend any points on anything you don't need.  The only upgrades you should buy are special and heavy weapons in squads.

Heavy weapon teams are useless in the current meta - wave serpents kill the entire squad in a heartbeat even with terrible dice rolling, and tau just laugh them off the table.

Here are some good combinations:

Command squad with 4 special weapons in a chimera

20 man troop squads with sympathetic heavy/special weapons and a commissar (no CC weapons)

vendettas

Psyker battle squads

3xheavy bolter Leman Russ

Manticore

Exterminator with hull lascannon

colossus (these are awesome)

Hydras

just stick to a nice mix of infantry and AV14 tanks to begin with,  keep it nice and simple, and you'll do fine.

Also: Ally in inquisitors to twin-link artillery! especially the colossus

Thanks.. Or maybe "tanks"... For all the input.

I've continued on with the Catachan Green/camo green paint scheme as planned. The Vendetta and Chimera are looking very nice, and my second Russ is coming along.. Just debating on what cannon I want. I'm planning on an anti armor unit of Russ tanks, and I'm not sure if I want the basic cannon or the longer canon.

First command squad has a vox caster, a medic, a meltagun (wanted a heavy flamer, but had glued the wrong legs to the torso, so the pocket interferes with the gas line of the flamer), a bearer with bionic arm and power sword (what's the difference between the two flags, btw?) and a sarge/commandant. Current scheme is basic fluffy Cadian colors.

Manticore and my second command squad just arrived in store. I have to say.. The GW customer service through retailers is outstanding. I ordered Tuesday, the shop owner had it by Friday.

Future plans are one more Russ, another vendetta, a hellhound, and an ordinance battery. Some purchases I'm holding out for the new release for. I hear the basilisk is getting a facelift, and plastic storm troopers... And a rumored knight paladin would be most welcome!

Pics to follow... Including some of the figures in better light. Words of caution... I'm not good with the highlight layer or eyes, so most of my ultramarines with bare heads look like 80's action figures.

For the Russ, I'd suggest not gluing the entire barrel together (if it's the new kit you've got, dunno about the old one) as you can use it as both the normal Russ, or the Vanquisher (Anti-armor, basically a long-range meltagun that always rolls 2d6, but only AP2)

From what I've seen, the only difference in flags is cosmetics. Use either of them for either standard.

I look forward to seeing this project completed!

Argun is right (nice avatar by the way), the new Russ kits lets you plug and play :) Regarding the banners the fancier and more ornate one is the Regimental Standard - the one with the big wings and honours on. The Platoon standard is the slightly tattered one.

Everyone needs a CCS, so that's no bad thing. I always take the standard as it looks great as a focus point for the army, and it has been at the head of many a glorious charge to victory :D So much so that I think I'd use the model for one of the lasgun members of the squad even if I didn't pay for the upgrade!
