Molokai
I've decided to finally start a 30k force. At the moment I'm leaning heavily towards pre heresy death guard. The scheme is different to anything I've painted before and want to give it a shot. I'm ordering betrayal tomorrow when I get paid and also want to order some resin goodies. I want to get some cataphractii. Now, will this work? On lexicanum it says death guard used tda quite heavily, so if I was to build a force around cataphractii would that be fluffy for death guard? Down the track I'll get a couple of Spartans too. Any advice you 30k veterans can offer would be awesome! Btw it's 46•c here today in Adelaide, stinkin! GhostMalone
Brother Molokai, I live in Adelaide and play pre heresy death guard. Shall I help you? TDA is the way to go using the right of war the reaping we can use heavy support and elites as troops Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285686-starting-out-cataphractii/#findComment-3570570 Share on other sites
Molokai
Hey Jaspcat that would be great! Honestly because I don't have betrayal yet I don't know where to start. I figured a set of tda would be something to get started with as I love the models, which is no doubt something important for most of us. So I did read some stuff on 4chan where you get a rite of war that lets you field tda as troops. This I find great as in 40k I play bikes and really want to do something different, so yeah... Cheers, great to see a fellow traveller on here. DuskRaider
I've got a Death Guard force myself and I use Pride of the Legion, which allows me to take Terminators as troops. It's not a cheap army to play, both points and money wise, but when you have 30+ Cataphractii opposite your opponent, it's pretty awesome. I would suggest two things: have two squads of maxed Tactical Marines. In a game where you're probably going to be lining up against a large number of Power Armor, TDA has it's disadvantages. Throw the Marines down if anything just for a meat shield. Second, Spartans Spartans Spartans. Cataphractii are slow, if you walk them you will lose some. Or a lot, depending on your opponent. The Spartan, while not cheap, is an absolute beast. Third, Primus Medicae in TDA. Thrown in with your Terminators, it makes them quite literally walking tanks. Moritat with Destroyers using Jump Packs is a good support choice to hop around the board as well. depthcharge12
Part of the crew....part of the ship...part of the crew...part of the ship.... *ahem* Don't neglect some grave wardens and deathshroud in your army :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285686-starting-out-cataphractii/#findComment-3570718 Share on other sites
lokkorex
a full terminator Death guard army sounds incredibly awesome! just imagine the enemys reaction, after a full night of phosphex and Cham bombardments, out of the poison Clouds walk hulking warriors that no fire bites on, and then they open up fire with grenade launcher, combi-bolter and chem-flamer and then cutting down the rest with Power scythes. and then they set their sights on the next enemy line... DuskRaider
Yup, you can take Grave Wardens for your Heavy Slots and Deathshroud as your Elites. Problem is, Grave Wardens kind of suck for Heavy support... their very short range makes them impractical for anything other than using the Death Guard Rite of War, IMO. Deathshroud are awesome, but I'm too much of a fluff bunny and limit myself to only four, accompanying my Praetor. Excubitor
South Australia is being lost to the Traitors... For some reason, I'm not surprised! Molokai
Thanks for the inspiration so far guys, this is gonna be awesome! So next question. If I was to do a couple of tactical squads which mark of armour would be most fluffy for pre heresy? I'm not really up on history that much so I don't know exactly where on the timeline I'm going to theme my force. I know I don't want any mutations, so they may well still be loyal. I know rule of cool and all but I quite like most marks so am open to suggestions. I was originally intending on keeping one mark across the board, but Ive opened my view to maybe having a mixed bunch. What say you? Cheers Jamo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285686-starting-out-cataphractii/#findComment-3571215 Share on other sites
infyrana
Which legion ? My DG will stay MkIII except specific roles like Destroyers, the odd Centurion, or if I decide to integrate a Reaver squad for some alternate models. Can't go wrong with MkIV for any marine except maybe certain roles (breachers). If you're going DG, IH or IF, try MkIII, far heavier and suits their tactics of siege or foot slogging warfare etc. Best of all, check the Wiki's online for "Space Marine Armour", and you can read up on all of them. DuskRaider
For Death Guard, Mk. II and Mk. III work well. I mixed a few Mk. IV models in as well just for kicks and to break up any monotony. Molokai
Yeah cheers. I've had a look around the net and am quite impressed with some of the renditions of both marks ii and iii. I've built plenty of mk iv in the past as its my favorite, so I've now, with the help here, decided on mk ii and iii evenly distributed across my force. Gotta love fw!
