KJB
Ok, being the king of indecision that I am, this has been doing my head in for about 6 months and has cost me a small fortune so far, but I've finally decided on a legion to choose.... As always, I'm inevitably drawn back to my first 40k army, the sons of Vulkan, the XVIIIth, the great and glorious Salamanders Now, what I need from my brilliant (and annoyingly decisive) brothers (that's you) is a few final pieces of advice before I get paid on Friday and place my first order of the year to Forge World... So, on with the questions... 1. Armour marks. So, the Salamanders are technically advanced, which suggests Mk IV armour, however, they specialize in shortrange fire fights and enjoy burning things, which always makes me think Mk III - What do you guys reckon? (The new Mk III command squad sure looks purdy...) 2. Armour marks (part 2) When you build your legion forces, do you try and keep the full force in the same mark of armour? Or just keep squads in the same mark? Or just mix and match bits up for the fun of it? 3. Inferno pistols The only Inferno pistols I can find are the plastic Blood Angel ones, which lets face it, don't scream 30k, or even look good - What do you think of using the Hand Flamer from the MkIII weapons set? That's all for now, undoubtedly I'll be back with more random questions - Cheers guys!! Excessus
1&2: Use Mk V on all of them, scavenged and repaired armours with visible battle scars, mixed and matched pieces of different marks in a low resource environment. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285824-legion-chosen-modelling-advice-required/#findComment-3573549 Share on other sites
Conn Eremon
Excessus his right if this is a Heresy army. If you want to model a Great Crusade era, I would go more for mk III, heavy on the embellishments. Darthsillyness
I would of said Mark IV tbh. Like you said, they're technically advanced and that would of been the the top mark at the time. Jus sayin Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285824-legion-chosen-modelling-advice-required/#findComment-3573723 Share on other sites

Jus sayin Mark III better suits their temperament. That, and Mark III has the oldest look to it, aesthetically. Adding embellishments would make it very Salamandery. KJB
Yeah, it will be a crusade/Istvaan era force - So, Mark III it is Hmm, I'll need heavy flamers and Melta guns... Lots of them Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285824-legion-chosen-modelling-advice-required/#findComment-3573996 Share on other sites
Barabbas Sogalon
1. Mostly Mk III with some Mk V to show post-Istvaan scavenging. Perhaps use Mk IV for veterans? 2. I like to keep the individual squads in the same marks, that's because I like a uniform look, and only characters are given mixed armour. But each Salamander crafts his own armour and after Istvaan they will have been forced to use any material available, so mixing marks would fit your army. 3. Not sure. Try removing the muzzles from the Mk III hand flamers and replace them with those from the pre heresy meltas. Russ Brother 92
There are flamer and melta gun sets out, you could easily cut the down for your inferno pistol wielding pyroclasts Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285824-legion-chosen-modelling-advice-required/#findComment-3575078 Share on other sites
Emperors Teeth
My Iron Hands' core is MkII, but I will embellish the army with some smatterings of MkIII. I see it that MkII is standard issue, and would have eventually be replaced by MkIV. MkIII is a special upgrade to MkII that certain units may require for their hazardous roles.Tacticals = MkII Breachers = MkIII Heavy weapons = ...depends on the unit. My Missile Launcher team are MkII, Lascannons will be MkIII. If I do a Volkite Caliver squad, it'll also be MkIII. My Master of Signal will be in Artificer MkIII. DuskRaider
I'd suggest the Iron Hands squads... yeah, you'll need to file off some of the excess stuff, but their Mk. III armor is heavily personalized, there's a lot of bionic bits to be used as well, and let's face it... a Veteran Astartes is going to lose a limb or two along the way.
