Looking to field awesome thunderwolf cavalry unit

I like to mix a 3 TW unit with a TW lord.  As Max said, I prefer using the wolf claw or frost blade due to save Ini 5 and put a Powerfist in the unit (for a little points reduction).

It's a "little" point sinks (nearly 600 points) but in big battles they can go unnoticed and then crush enemies.

I would also take a 10 fenris wolves unit to save me from the defensive fire of those pesky Tau.

(another thing that to me has gone surprisingly well is escort the TW with a swiftclaw biker unit and a divination runic priest on bike... Insane when the whole TW unit is allowed to reroll hits)

Id try run something like this if i were you, and you were looking for some sort of deathstar unit (it will draw A LOT of fire though)

1x Wolf Lord - TWM, R.Armour, S.Shield, SotBear, T.Hammer

3-4x TWC - 1-2x SS (depends on points), 1xW.claw

of course feel free to throw in a 5th guy. I think storm shields are too expensive to run on everyone, just make sure your storm shield guys are out the front to tank inv saves.

The lord with a 2+/3++ shouldnt need to worry about initiative (unless going up against one of the super expensive 2+ power weapons about these days) as he should take wounds like a boss, then crush anything in his path with S10 thunder hammer hits, however he's most likely going to get challenged and waste his attacks in any first round...which is a problem these days.

If you are wanting to run 5 without a lord...

5x TWC

-Storm Shield

-Storm Shield

-Thunder Hammer

- Wolf Claw, M.bombs

- Normal, M.Bombs

This way, you have to out front to tank invunerables, a low initiative monster (who cant be challenged out), a wolf claw for dealing with 3+, and then an extra body in there for taking more wounds/covering your rear.

I dont bother putting SS and a weapon upgrade on one model, as then if that model buys it, your losing a lot of points in upgrades...i find its better to split things up between the squd and simply run the storm shields at the front.

Note - the only reason i take thunder hammers instead of powerfists is cos i think powerfists look daft on a cavalry model.

In a recent game i used the following setup

Wolf Lord - TWM, RA, TH, SS, SotBear

attached to 15 fenrisian wolves

Wolf Lord - TWM, RA, W.Claw, SS, SotBeastlayer, M.bombs.

2x wolves

(i would have added another 15 wolves to the second lord but dont have the models). I find this a much more points effective way of getting thunderlords across the table and into combat. The wolves will probbly all die, but if they get into combat, do a lot of attacks. Very fun, but probably not competitve.

To answer the question of limiting the special cc weapons the Thunderwolves get rending attacks standard, unless you give them a power weapon of some kind. Since power swords no longer defeat 2+ saves and axes now strike at I1 the only worthwhile weapons to replace rending are going to be Thunderhammers or Power Fists, and it's best not to go overboard, after all you want to try and keep the cost of upgrades relatively low.

Everything

this made me laugh and reminded me of a game I oncce lyed against a grey knight player- Thor was in with his thunder wolves and my opponent wanted to charge the unit with a lone Dreadknight-

"whats your lord got??"

he asked-my response??#

"EVERYHTHING!!! he's tooled up to the B$%^^S"

he still charged and had a winge when my lord took the hits like a boss and beat his dreaknight back to titan in a matchbox!!

on topic?

running 5 TWC i'd go 2 shields and a fist (slightly cheaper than a hammer and wont do much more, unless youre going rule of coll ofcourse pirate.gif )

I agree about Canis, you can build a wold lord w/wolf claw, Stormshield for about the same, throw on saga of the bear to save those ID wounds and your'e good to go"!
