First Blood IC question

So I've seen the question asked "do ICs give up first blood if they get sniped out of a unit?" I think the answer seems to be yes. However, the opposite situation came up in a game recently. A unit was entirely wiped out except for the IC that had joined it. My opponent claimed that this shouldn't give up first blood because the IC was part of the unit - I thought this was a silly claim to make, but I said sure because I don't actually care that much and didn't feel like getting into a heated debate about this (I ended up winning 8-1, so karma was kind to me there - ironically his 1 point was "first blood" the following turn).

So my question: if I kill every model in a unit except the IC that has joined the unit, does that count for first blood? If not, why not?

The unit was purchased by itself, as was the character. Two separate units become one.

"While an Independent Character is part of a unit, he counts as part of the unit for all rules purposes." (p.39)

"The first unit, of any kind, to be removed as a casualty..." (p.122)

He was right, in that at the moment of the unit's death, the character still counted as part of the unit, and so no first blood. However, if he is going to argue the details, he'd best make sure he's right next time:

"If an Independent Character joins a unit, and all other models in that unit are killed, he again becomes a unit of one model at the start of the following phase." (p.39)

So, if you shot his unit away, no First Blood during the shooting phase. At the start of the assault phase, however, he's no longer part of the unit he joined (because it's dead), and because it's dead you get First Blood.
