Vor
So, this might sound very weird, but a number of my models built about a year ago are.. just falling to part. All my Ogres, a number of my Bretonnians and some of my Space Wolves. In the case of my ogres, it also seems to have disfigured then which is very frustrating because legs and arms now no longer seem to even fit onto torsos. I can literally pull them apart with my fingers without exerting much force at all. The glue, rather than bonding the plastics, seems to have just... crystallized. Has anyone experienced this? It makes it really difficult to reglue them too. So I'm after a way to get this crystallized glue off the models. Ramell
What brand of glue are you using? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286061-crystalizing-glue/#findComment-3578256 Share on other sites
infyrana
To get dry glue off of a model ? Scrap, file and otherwise pick it off. The GW plastic glue seems to melt the plastic together. Super Glue* doesn't, and will dry to a breakable substance that you can part in the future depending on how much you used and what material / strength of part glued (*well, at least the generic UK super glue does this). If it breaks, just reglue using basic superglue between the existing glue - a thin layer should stick to the two glue surfaces together. That is, assuming the parted pieces have a flat or matching designed area that is broken. Forté
Never heard of that happening. The polystyrene cement (or plastic glue) works by melting the two parts together. It does only work if it's plastic on plastic though. As in, no layers of paint. You'll have to scrape/ file/ cut it down till you get back to the bare plastic for both parts for it to bond. AtlasDM
I've had that happen to some of my models before. I had used some regular super glue from Walmart and shortly after I had arms falling off everywhere. Just take a hobby knife and scrape the crusty glue off the minis. Then go buy actual modeling glue from Hobby Lobby of someplace similar. It's always in the isle with the plastic models and model accessories. You can get a bottle twice the size of the GW glue for half the cost and it works great. Vor
It is plastic glue. GW brand. Found a few other topics on this from around the same team I built my models. Doddy batch it seems. Really annoying. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286061-crystalizing-glue/#findComment-3578477 Share on other sites
Thunderhawk3015
There was a dodgy batch of glue at one point from GW. messed ups happen so far the glue since then has worked just fine. Xenith
I've heard of lots of problems with GW poly-cement, bottles sold a year to 6months ago crystallised and are able to be broken apart. I believe GW had an amnesty on them at one point, and you could trade in ruined models for brand new ones, and get replacement glue. Call customer services. That should always be the first point of call. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286061-crystalizing-glue/#findComment-3578598 Share on other sites
netminder69
While looking for replacement glue, if you can, get Plastruct Bondene. I fell in love with this stuff. It's a liquid plastic solvent cement and comes with a brush. You hold the two pieces together and brush it along the seam and goes in by capillary action and sets the pieces in seconds. It's amazing stuff. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286061-crystalizing-glue/#findComment-3579327 Share on other sites
Forté
I usually use humbrol glue but you can find all sorts of brands in normal hobby shops (the sort that sell Airfix and Tamiya stuff). Tried and tested. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286061-crystalizing-glue/#findComment-3579480 Share on other sites
Excessus
I used to use the GW superglue, but I find that in many cases it has crystallized now and bots just keep popping off. Nowadays I use galeforce nine glue and it works like a charm on plastic, metal, resin and fingers! Rik Lightstar
Super Glue is prone to getting "brittle" if there are changes in temperature/humidity and more so if these are repeated, so storing your minis in either a garage or shed may be part of the cause. Vor
GW have confirmed this was an issue. They've offered to replace all models damaged by the glue and have given me a voucher.
