Remind me - what's the official stance and / or opinion on same codex as ally?

Like IG + IG in order to get 4 IG Heavy Support choices?

For a Tournament that allows allies - is the above always allowed? Sometimes allowed - depending on tournament? Never allowed, ..etc?

Thanks again!

The only codex that openly allows you to take allies from the same codex as your primary detachment is codex: space marines.

Supplements are a different issue. As you can ally a supplement allied detachment to a primary from its parent codex and vice-versa.

Imperial guard may ally with the forge world lists (elysians, death corps, armoured company) in the same way as a supplement, but straight up guard with guard allies is a no go.

Apart form the first Supplement.  The Ilyanden supplement specifically states it *cannot* ally with Codex: Eldar.

Heaven knows why...

Yeah...

And Farsight fight his lone war against Chaos and considered traitor, still ally Tau, while Shadowsun will give no hesitation shooting a Space Marine, she join centurions and make them ignore cover.

If anyone could manage to herd the GW design team into a single room and
show them the current ally rules (inc supplements and whatnot) I'd be
very interested to hear the discussions on the logic behind some of the
decisions made.

I've wanted this since seeing 'nids when 6th was released!
