Death Watch detachment

So I've got an apoc game coming up in a couple months and I really like the idea of fielding a Death Watch detachment. Plus I can use them for any DeathWatch RPG sessions I get into in the future. So I've started working on the detachment. It will be comprised of 21 marines which will make up 2 squads of ten and a captain. For variety I'm going to include members that are representative of several chapters. this break down will include 3 Ultramarines, 2 Iron Hands, 2 Crimson Fists, 2 Imperial Fists, 2 Black Templar, 2 Dark Angels, 2 Blood Angels, 2 Space Wolves, 2 Aurora Chapter Marines and 1 black shield to round out the two squads. Oh and the captain himself.

In the Warzone Damnos book the DeathWatch detachment has a converted Kantor model for the captain and I really liked the look of that. The Kantor model is a very solid design that lends itself well to a battle field commander sort of look. He doesn't fall into the trap that other marine hero models fall into, like Calgar and Khan, where they look so bedazzled and bedecked out that they stop being fighters and become... well the officers that were pushed onto the front line.

The biggest conversion here is the shoulder, the left shoulder specifically. For those that are unfamiliar with the model, the Pedro Kantor model has an ammo feed that connects behind his shoulder pad, which is prominently sculpted displaying Crimson fists heraldry. Well Death Watch members have the Death Watch mark displayed on the left shoulder. So the shoulder pad had to go. At first I thought I would be able to carve down the shoulder pad and put the death watch shoulder pad over it. But the original shoulder pad was made in such a way that it came far further down on the arm then a normal shoulder pad would. So by carving off the original I lost implied detail that would need to be replaced.

So in the end I replaced the upper arm with a plastic one from the tactical kit.

So next is building the respective members of the two squads.

As always, feedback and comments are welcome.

Well since everyone is so interested I got 9 members of the detachment built today.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-group-01_zpsd8e6b9f0.jpg

Thus far I have 2 Iron Hands, 2 Blood Angels, a Crimson/Imperial fist (You know, since the only difference between their symbol is the color of the paint) a Space Wolf, Black Templar, An Ultramarine, and Aurora marine built.

The Ultramarine and Aurora Marine are pretty straight forward builds:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-aurora-01_zpsb246c297.jpg

The Black Templar and Fist marine are only slightly more involved, each being on kneeling legs:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-bt1-01_zpsea585d94.jpg

The Blood Angels and Iron Hands and space wolf are more involved build wise:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-bloodangel-01-1_zps538af31b.jpg

One of the Blood Angels has the Mk 5 Torso which I found in my bitz box.

Yah for another day off. I was intending to get down to Game Vault for a couple games tonight but just not feeling up to it. It's flipping 9 degrees outside I didn't sleep terribly well last night and the entire day I've just kind of been "blah". So yeah not going down to game tonight. but I did work on a couple project in today. First thing I finished 8 more members of the Death Watch detachment including 2 heavy bolter marines and one of the sergeants.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-group-02_zps33790863.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-darkangel-01_zps1c32379b.jpg

First up is a Dark Angel Death Watch marine. Helmet, shoulder pad and back pack from the Dark Angels sprue give him his required Emo-ness.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-impfist-02_zpsb25d0fec.jpg

Next up is another Imperial/Crimson fist marine. Pretty straight forward.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-spacewolf-2_zps3004a9cc.jpg

Then we have the 2nd Space Wolf for the detachment. I had intended to have the the knife in more of a "preparing to slit your throat" sort of pose but it didn't quite work out that way. Still, he's suitably Wolfie.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-impfist-03_zps07e058f9.jpg

Black Templar Death Watch marine. Added a Bionic arm for some character.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-impfist-03-1_zps82788afc.jpg

This imperial/crimson fist marine was a happy accident. I rather like the slightly raised/lowed level of the bolter, it gives this look of the marine preparing to fire.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-ultramarine-02_zps468aba55.jpg

Then we have the first Sergent. I added a bionic head I found in my bitz box.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-impfist-04_zps5abadd40.jpg

Here we have the first of 4 Heavy Bolter equipped marines, this one from one of the Fist chapters. I added the Servo skull because it looks cool. The Big challenge here was adding the chapter badge to the right shoulder because the way the arm is designed. I had to cut out the plain shoulder, and then add in an un-shoulder pad clad shoulder joint with the chapter badge on that. Worked out well enough.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/deathwatch-blackshield-01-spread_zps8daee9cf.jpg

Here is the second Heavy bolter marine. He is also a Black Shield. Black Shields are Death Watch marines who have no chapter, either because they are the last surviving members of their chapter or because they have been excommunicated by their chapter. They wear an shield as a designation of their commitment to the Death Watch.

Okay, lemme try this again. For some reason the internet is being unkind to me today and it's messing with a lot of my links and pictures.

And construction of the Kill Team Detachment has been completed (You know baring the possibility that I want to build a Death Watch Dreadnought just because I can, or I have that Land Speeder I could build. And a Storm. A little speedy transport wouldn't be unwelcome for a Death Watch team).

Anyway. 20 Death Watch marines with a watch captain:

4 Heavy Bolter armed marines comprise the Heavy Weapons Section of the detachment:

Each of the two squads are lead by a Sergent:

As with all Death Watch Kill teams, the detachment is comprised of Marines from various chapters. Here we see the 4 Fists (2 Imperial Fists, 2 Crimson fists).

Honor bound to destroy those that would endanger the Imperium of Man, the Black Templars have a presence in the Death Watch

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/SAM_0766_zps5449d402.jpghttp://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/SAM_0765_zps5286d368.jpg

With the cold methodical logic that makes them so dangerous, the Iron Hands provide fire support for their Death Watch Brothers:http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/SAM_0764_zps7188ceea.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/SAM_0763_zps8d05bb27.jpg

I use very simple conversions through out the entire detachment to keep it as uniform as a Death Watch can reasonably be. Mainly part swaps. the Iron Hand marines are good examples of this as I use the torsos and one set of bionic legs from the Iron Hands upgrade kit for the pair of them.

There were only a hand full of 'free form' conversions through out the entire detachment, and by free form I mean I didn't simply decide to use a different part to accomplish the effect.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/d663feff-0e7c-41f0-b5cd-0e42b62352ff_zpscf8c3a0c.jpg

This Sergent is the first example. I use a pin in the left Wrist to angle the sword outward to signify him declaring a charge.

Another example is basically every one of the Heavy Bolter armed marines.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a316/maverike_prime/Warhammer/DeathWatch%20Detachment/SAM_0756_zps3150b16f.jpg

The right shoulder of the Heavy Bolter set up has the ammo belt coming right across the edge of the shoulder pad meaning the shoulder pad is actually one piece with the ammo feed and a couple cables. So I couldn't pop on the shoulder pad of the respective chapter. I had to literally cut away the old shoulder (minus the shoulder for the Black Shield mind you. He can just be a flat shoulder pad). I then had to use should segments from other arms (I used the shoulders from the tactical marines for reason I will explain in a bit) to replace the upper arm and then added the shoulder pad to that effectively rebuilding the bit with the chapter iconography.

Through out the entire detachment I wanted to keep the various little accoutrements and symbols that so characterize space marines

The Marksmanship honor hanging from the barrel of the bolter on the left.

So, I mentioned I used the shoulders from the Tactical marines arms for replacing the shoulders of the heavy bolters and I alluded that there was a reason for this choice. Here's why:

In the new tactical kit, the hands are built into the bolters while the arms are separate pieces. You attach the hand and arm at the wrist. Nice option for conversions, but in this particular case it created a little bit of a head ache as it means I had to cut out the hands from the bolters, and then attach them to the Death Watch Bolters. 15 times... It gets a bit boring after a while. Anyway, This now means I have 15 arms, that I don't have hands to go with. So I further canalized 4 of the arms to rebuild the shoulders of the Heavy Bolters.

And there we have a 21 man Death Watch Detachment complete and ready for paint.

... you know, I do have all those extra Dreadnought pieces. I might just do a Death Watch Dread.

yeah right. Like that's ever the case. Was flipping through the Death Watch Books and the Dreadnought entry caught my eye. I mean REALLY caught my eye. So I started shifting through my bitz box to see what parts of which dread kit I could find. Well I found almost an entire Ven Dread kit. I say almost cause Don't have the assault cannon arm (oh boo hoo). So what's going on the Death Watch line up next? Yup You guessed it, a Dreadnought.

Here's what I've started on with it already: (lemme try to fix this little problem with my pictures)

so, had the day today and decided to work on the Death Watch Detachment. I am still working on the dreadnought, but I can't find a couple pieces just now. So that will be on hold for the immediate time.

So what did I work on today? Painting of course. I got 8 members painted at least to an identifiable le

Oh man, the dreadnought is off to a great start- what did you use to make the lettering indentations in the green stuff trim?

Your deathwatch marines are looking pretty spiffy too Maverike.

As an aside though, any chance you'll be putting up a new video on your storm talon conversion anytime soon?
