Flint's Tiny Tutes: 15min Recon Camo

Morning Folks!

A few people have asked how I do the camouflage for my Nightlord recon marines, so I thought I'd flesh out my process and make a little tutorial for it. For the good of the community!

I went for an icy city camo with blues and grays, but I've had success with mixes of browns, greens, grays and even some red and oranges for desert styles. The trick is picking three colors that complement your chosen terrain and a fourth that is slightly lighter than all three. A wash to tie them all together is essential, and lastly, you can choose a fifth that is lighter than all of those to highlight, but that step is optional. You'll see what I mean in a second.

On to the good stuff!

Here is our intrepid volunteer and his range of colors!

Step 1: Block out your cloth.

Step 2: Start with the mid-line color (Eshin gray for me). Drag tiny lines in one concise direction. Vary the length and thickness of some those lines. No uniform branches!

Step 3: Bring in the darker color (Fenris gray here). Pair those first lines with more from this next color. Try to keep most of the lines barely touching each other. They end up looking odd if just floating out in space.

Step 4: Bring in the lightest of your 3 camo colors (Russ gray). Try to bond the little lines together into little triplets. You can be a little more forgiving here. The wash does a better job of tying the light colors together.

Step 5: Wash to pull all the colors closer together. I used a thinned drakenhoff blue, since all of my colors have a blue hint anyway. Concentrate a little extra wash down in the recesses of your folds to imitate shadows. Be sure to thin your wash first. A super thick wash can obliterate some of the more delicate colors. Plus you can always wash a second time if need be.

Step 6 (optional) - I think your camo will look just fine here, but if you want to take another step to it, highlight the very edges and raises in the folds. It also helps give it a bit more of a shifty quality.

There you have super simple, yet good looking camo to keep your marines all sneaky!

True step by step guide, certainly looks quick and easy as well as giving a great result !  Approved :D

The last step with the shifty quality adds a real nice touch to finish it off.

(though I might substitute my colours for less blue and more green and brown lol)

Thanks guys. I hope you all get some good use out of it. It will work with pretty much any "natural" color combination for different environments and a wash to tie them all together.

Let me know if anyone has any questions.
