Mobile Support Units?

I am an old player who is getting back into the hobby.  Building a SM army around 3 Tactical squads with one Dev squad for anti tank.  I have one Drop pod, a rhino and a Razorback. I am picking up the codex tomorrow and I want to buy an infantry support unit.

I am thinking about a Storm Talon or a Landspeeder Squadron.  I want something that can move around the battle field and support the troops while they take objectives.  Could the Storm Talon handle this task or would the Landspeeders be the best bet?

(sorry for the spelling error in the topic line, can't seem to edit it out)

Stormtalons are a great little unit, lots of firepower and difficult to hit owing to being a flyer, but they will go down if your opponent puts his mind to it. With assault cannon and sky hammer missiles they put out 4 x S6 and 3 x S7 shots a turn, making them good against pretty much everything except really heavy duty armour (and even then the asscan can be used in a pinch). Being a flyer though the earliest they can turn up is turn 2, and they can be difficult to maneuver. They have a special rule that allows them to accompany another unit from reserve but only roll for the one unit, so you might want to consider outflanking a unit of scouts or getting a Stormraven to accompany it.

Land speeders are a mixed bag. Different players will swear by different configurations, while others will condemn them for being too fragile (AV10 all round). My personal choice is the basic heavy bolter with a typhoon missile launcher - fairly cheap and has the mobility to get shots off on side armour. 2 frag templates and a HB also make it fault good against infantry. Deep striking dual heavy flamer speeders is also popular, but a bit of a one trick pony. Don't expect them to survive many games though, if your opponent so much as looks at them funny they'll blow up.

The rule with all armour is to take it in multiples. Even a land raider is unlikely to last very long if it's the only armour on the board T1. Speeders in particular are vulnerable to this because they're so fragile, may be worth taking single speeders as separate units if you have the slots.

Hope that helps you decide which route to take.

Stormtalons can't escort a unit that is outflanking. That being said, Stormtalons are indeed an excellent fire support unit. Landspeeder typhoons are also an excellent means of bringing mobile fire support and shifting fire lanes.

If you have enough money, try and invest in a stormwing formation. 3 Flyers coming in on one turn with one dice roll is extremely power and they and reach pretty much the whole board.
