Samitte
Hello, This plog will be the visual representation of my DIY Space Marines and their allies. (A Radical Inquisitor and her retineu being the first up.) Once its up I'll provide a link to the Liber article as well. Any C&C is welcome, so is advice. I'll be experimenting with a lot of new stuff so if you think there is something I could try, I'm all in for it. First up, todays progress: Second Squad, + Heavy Bolter http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030435_zpse70e2d1c.jpg And the other lads: Third Squad, + Heavy Bolter http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/b35a5948-ce66-4eae-bd1a-09944221062c_zpsff9c3ed3.jpg The force will be mainly small 5-6 man squads with heavy weapons and transports. I'm still on the fence about glueing on the arms before I prime them, because I remember the horror of the Great Weapon Grave Guards Anyway, since I had to start with something this is it (Else I'll keep putting it off while I keep making pictures), its not much but it'll grow. Samitte
Well, that was a bummer. First I was talking to a friend about my Marines when he commented on the name, as he had recently bought the Sentinels of Terra supplement. ''Yeah, GW took the name, they made the Sons of the Forge an Iron Hands warband.'' And then I found out that that old bottle of super glue I found had not dried up.. Turned out to be plastic cement. Spent a whole day trying to get some finecast models to stick with it and made a right mess of things. And then I had to take care of my gran for a couple of days. At least she had a good laugh while I was painting and how my ''Parkinsons'' was worse then hers with the current meds I have . Anyway, the first two lads, they will be the heavy weapons guys in the squads. I thinned my paints and as much as I love the way it paints, it does take me a lot longer. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030440_zpsfe8003fe.jpg And their heads: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030443_zps1b7322e3.jpg Planning to continue the copper/grey paint scheme, with cables and lenses being in the red and yellow spectrum. I am quite happy with how the eyes have turned out, always was horrible at eyes. But I do see some splutches that need cleaning up. When I have better light tomorrow I'll see about doing some highlights and finishing up the chest/legs and the helmets and hopefully the bases and arms/weapons/back as well so I can finally have my first two marines up! (I just LOVE Heavy Bolters, Plasma Cannons and Assault Cannons so expect to see a lot of those popping up.) Forté
Defo make sure you have better light. Or invest in a couple of lamps. Sorry but I had a little giggle about the glue and the Parkinsons comment. Be interesting to see how these turn out. Ch@oZ
Yup, grey and copper looks cool imo. I like the shade of bluish grey You've chosen for the secondary color, I think it'll look great in bulk. Phalanx Warder
i think that the use of the colors selected will be quite striking but i would sugest using a (black) wash to cover the seems between the two colors. Sorry but I had a little giggle about the glue and the Parkinsons comment. Be interesting to see how these turn out. Yeah, going to get some proper lighting this weekend. I get no natural light into my room, the window is directly aligned with the passing of the sun. And no need to be sorry, laughing makes all problems go away! (Except in the Warhammer 40k universe...) Yup, grey and copper looks cool imo. I like the shade of bluish grey You've chosen for the secondary color, I think it'll look great in bulk. Thanks, I am quite happy with how it turned out. There was another colour there first but I screwed up that paint job bigtime, and it didn't work at all. It's one of the old Foundation Paints, Adeptus Battlegrey. It covers so well, even when thinned out a lot. i think that the use of the colors selected will be quite striking but i would sugest using a (black) wash to cover the seems between the two colors. Cheers Battle8rother I was doubting about using a brown or black wash, but I'll be going for black then. Do you advice Nuln Oil straight from the pot or should I thin those down as well? Assembled the first Razorback today, ready for priming once the weather allows. Also cleaned the mold lines of most of the second one and painted all the base colors on the two Heavy Bolter marines and their bases. Found out I have no brown other then Dryad Bark so finishing up the rest tomorrow with something lighter for the pouches and the debris on the bases. Still waiting for my shipment of arms to come in, tracker says they arrived in the country almost two weeks ago. Samitte
Well, it's finally done! Two Tactical Marines with Heavy Bolter, and man do I love them. I had so much fun painting them. BattleBrother, although the pictures don't show it that well, the black wash worked very well! I am so happy with how they turned out, they look a lot more bad-ass in person then on these pictures. Once I have proper lights I will go over them thoroughly and see if and what I want to change still, but for now these two are finished, the first 48 points of my 500! EDIT: Doh, forgot to add the other heraldry and finish the skull+cog (Went with that as the Chapter symbol, since it was very close to my original idea and stuff and things) Brother Errik http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030447_zpse78e5adc.jpg Back http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030453_zps847cd381.jpg Sideshot http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030449_zpsa7071995.jpg Man do I love that helmet. Its so great! I think I need to grab some more. Brother Kaplan: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030445_zps6121a133.jpg Back http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030452_zps449316d7.jpg Them both together: And my gran' had a suprise as well. She wanted me to name a marine after her, ''some strong bloke, a general or something''. Of course I had to dissapoint her, since there are no female Space Marines. But then I remembered this lady, who was going to be my allied Inquisitor: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030464_zps05722d97.jpg Wonder what she'll think of that next time I see her. Samitte
While waiting for my shipment of arms to arrive, still. I decided to start working on my Master of the Forge and Razorbacks some more. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030465_zpsef3b96de.jpg Going to use greenstuff to cover the gaps that the chest piece thing leaves, and then cover up the shoulder with that pad. Not sure yet on what I will do with the skulls which have tendrils coming out, but they are probably going to go in favour of something less Iron Warrior-ish. The tendrils will have a varying assortment of goobins on them, ranging from plasma cutters and servo arms to a thurible. I'm still spotting chaosy parts all over the model but most of it has been removed now. A cog will go on the belt and then I think he is ready for painting. The other thing is these two: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030478_zps2523449b.jpg The Erebus and Iapetos.Whats left to do on them is to fill up any big gaps the second one might still have, and make the chapter symbol out of plasticard for on the back and ontop of the Rhino hatches in case I ever plan on using those. And drill out the barrels on the storm bolter. I just go straight from the pot but the choice is yours, If you are torn between brown and black I would thin your wash down and do a test of both. At the end of the day they are your minis and it is all about what YOU like! I have found that it helps blend the the seems between two stark colors like this: Below that wash between black and yellow it isn't pretty! Samitte
It's good to see that the master of the forge can be dechaosified and still stay looking cool as ever. Well done. Thanks! Just waiting for one more bit to come in and I can finish him. My shipment of arms came in and ooohh boy do they fit together like it was destiny. Also worked on a lot of things and didn't get much done. First up, my first and hopefully last (yeah right >_>) impulse buy of the year, a Land Speeder Vengeance! I will be a Land Speeder Typhoon once the last bits come in. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030487_zps070d451f.jpg The crew is not glued on, just for showing purposes. I absolutely love this kit. Its amazing. And the little turret in the front and the cool missile command in the back make up for the slight price difference with the normal land speeder. (You keep telling yourself that mister) Next up, the sergeant of the first squad is almost done, really pleased with how the banner is starting to shape up. I sort of kept on painting with a really bad brush and the kneepads show the result of that. Almost all the highlights I did after a certain point need to be redone. At least I won't stubbornly keep on painting with a bad brush in the future. (Really?...) http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030484_zps5e2bfff0.jpg Next up is another guy from the same squad, two objective markers I made up on the spot and a Ministorum Priest. Still working on getting rid of the last remains of the Icon and then a little touch of me and he's off to the painting table. (LOVE the model, was so sad when I found out it was OOP...) http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030483_zpsf990da55.jpg And last but not least, I finally finished the design of the Razorbacks! After I found the tutorial posted in the modelling section I became infatuated with the idea (if you scroll up, I had some of the Empire candles in there before and well.. Their mono look was a dissapointment) The world the Sons come from is a Feudal world and since they don't ride the local horse variants into battle (Haven't named them yet) their ''steeds'' instead are their tanks, speeders and planes. The candles in their mountains of wax are in veneration of the machine spirits of said ''steeds'' And icons/relics/stuff related to the vehicle is stuck in the wax and slowly becomes a part of the vehicle. The only time they take off the wax is when it clogs something or obscures view. It also has another purpose, which is making the task of painting vehicles a lot less scary! Since it breaks up the, what would be, massive patches of bronze which were quite scary, with red (and possibly beige/yellow) wax and candles. With a relic here and there to break up that monotony. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030492_zps2994af60.jpg (The candlepatch on the left headlight came lose before I took the picture) http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030491_zpsab8e5697.jpg And their bums, with my adopted Chapter Symbol http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030493_zpsaa33364d.jpg Just plain plasticard and a print out of a cog and skull. Samitte
Small update, the first Squad is done! ''Sergeant, movement spotted on ten o'clock, it looks like Deamons sir.'' Sergeant Karim grunted and gave the sign to hold. ''Thorbad, left flank. Lucas, right flank. Harmadik squad, what is our craft?!'' ''Our craft is death!'' they shouted as one as their bolters spat the Emperor's wrath at the filthy creatures. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030497_zpsc637957c.jpg I gave up at 8-9 pictures taken to get anything decent done. Summer can't come soon enough. I'm shaking too much to get anything on the banner but the Roman numerals and even that took me almost an hour. So the empty area below that will remain that way for now. Xwingt65
Looks cool! But fluff alert. Naming one razorback the "Erebus" might not be so awesome. Samitte
Looks cool! But fluff alert. Naming one razorback the "Erebus" might not be so awesome. He was one of the architects of the Horus Heresy :-) Ah thanks, I knew that but did not make the connection. Plenty of names in the sea still so no biggy! I shall now be called the Phobos (There is a Deimos somewhere in the future as well, fitting as these are the moons of Mars) Might even make that a theme for the vehicles, have them named after Forgeworlds. Seconded on the Rhinos, great job. Thanks, looking forward to painting them as I got a bit tired of Marines. Was trying to paint all 8 at the same time but that was just a bit too much, finishing these 5 was a breeze in comparison. Samitte
Hubba hubba, Murphy's Law kicked in almost the full 100% the last two days. Somehow all my good brushes went missing, my first pressing vinyl became warped and a string of other things... So instead of painting I decided to do some work on the thing I was looking forward the most to creating. Risky? Si. But I'd say it worked out rather well: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/P1030503_zps11213d6d.jpg B&C, meet the Iron Father of the 4th, Malachai Jakris. For a long time doubted wether or not I would stick on the pistols but went with it as I could not find a good solution to having the chains while they were magnetized. And I don't like the feeling of magnetized arms anyway, but I can live with a backpack. Any ideas on how I might still improve? He feels pretty done to me except for basing that needs to be finished. Then on to the hard part... I think I bit off more then I could chew when I started on my Master of the Forge conversion from the Warpsmith. I feel like I went past the point where it is easily salvagable by me and am thinking of putting it aside for now. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/P1030499_zps1d94d391.jpg Reason being I am not ''feeling'' it anymore. With all my previous things they felt right when I was busy and as of yesterday this just stopped doing that. The idea still feels good though but I am thinking of instead doing work on either of these two: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/P1030506_zps69354bd9.jpg Valthex > Master of the Forge/Techmarine with Servo Harness. I love this scult, Iit is probably THE best looking in my books and certainly sounds like a lot more fun to work on right now. I have most of the parts there except for the Plasma Cutter and Flamers for his Servo Harness. I was thinking of maybe using something akin to a Multi-Melta barrel mounted on a Servo Arm for the first, and the Flamer on another (the Plasma Cutter is what I struggle with, anyone has any ideas?) The other option is this bloke: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/P1030508_zps1fbdcdb0.jpg Planning on removing that stupid plasma thing on his backpack first and have a LOT of big holes to fill with GS. The other problem a small one. The Chapter Symbol I chose is basically a silver skull and cog. Now on everyone else this is on their left shoulder. To do that with him I'd either have to add a plastic shoulderpad to the existing one. (Doable) or stick with the one already on his right shoulder. Would that be really strange? And well, Iron Father Malachai made a friend this week: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/P1030517_zpsddf6dfd4.jpg Still letting it simmer and soak before I do anything with it. But I think I have a way to make myself some Centurions in this guy. But I might just paint him up and have them because they are bad-buttocks. (Therapeutic writing this was, I think I will go with Valthex. I've wanted to use that model for a long time now and actually having it makes me all giddy.) Samitte
Busy week, but I'm happy with the fruits of my labours. Got a date and got most work done on my Master of the Forge: Close up detail shot: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030521_zps232bb805.jpg Then, as you can probably see on the above shot the right Servo Arm isnt a 100% quality cast. I was thinking of putting a Psyber Vulture over it so the wings cover most of the badness but I am worried it might make the model too crowded. Also, I am not sure if non-Librarians even use or CAN use Psyber animals. Shot with the Maybe Psyber Vulture: (who needs to be psybered up of course) http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030518_zps396735bc.jpg Then a WIP shot of the Razorback, got all the base colours down except for on the thing holding the dozer blade. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030522_zps26267971.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030524_zpsdf2802d4.jpg And then here is the Land Speeder Typhoon. I will either put it on the base at this angle: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030528_zps4f32a0ab.jpg But it might be a little too much movement and look off. Using the Valkyries missile pods as the Typhoon Missile Launcher. I was shocked by their size but after a while fell in love with them. In its normal condition it would look a bit like this: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd116/Thrask_VCModels/WH40K/P1030529_zps21db5336.jpg Any C&C is welcome!
