Kro's Sons of Medusa - Revived

Recommended Posts

I probably revive these marines and my painting skills more times than a Necro tomb world but here we go again!

I am once again in the position of NOT working 60 hours + a week and I am able to paint. Having previously taken around 10 years off without lifting a paintbrush I am once again re learning skills and slowly (very slowly) assembling a small force of 40k marines. Once these are complete I will commence work on a 30k force .. at this point you will all probably be finishing your 50k armies smile.png

This thread will hopefully be updated at least once a week but im not the fastest painter in the world. Anyway enough talk here are a few progress shots of what I did earlier.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_0982.jpg

Base coated and a small amount of zenith highlighting via the airbrush.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2604.jpg

Vintage shovel hands right there ... rugby players do not possess piano fingers :)

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2606.jpg

Green is finished ready for weathering and chipping. Squad number and Ferrus both completed , I will possibly add more purity seals to the armour as he will probably take the role of a veteran sergeant.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2605.jpg

Right arm will be magnetized for a chainsword or power sword.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2602.jpg

First of my Sternguard, both arms are magnetized in case i want to use him as a squad sergeant.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/08aa6b10-9fce-4bfc-a8ca-3b53bf65314c.jpg

Right shoulder needs trim highlighted and the Crux finished, apologies for the photo quality as its iPhone only

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/4af4cc87-17b1-4a14-bdbd-a1f7e45dd447.jpg

I went with a red helm on the sternguard, its not the usual colour as normal marines have white helms however I wanted the contrast and I think it works. The eye lenses will probably be green with a small amount of OSL, I was considering pale blue or orange too as these would also work with the white hems and the black helm of my captain etc.

Anyway thats it for now, please feel free to comment and critique the work, its the only way we learn ;)

The name and numbers, are those freehand? I'm seriously liking what you've put up and look forward to seeing more from you.

Most of the company markings, squad icons, names and chapter badges were designed by me on photoshop then sized and printed on to clear transfer paper using my laser printer.  I did these a number of years ago, I now have a much better colour laser that should allow me to get better badges etc.  I say most as I am practicing my free hand etc and will replace the transfers in the future with freehand designs, or certainly use the transfers as a baseline for freehand painting.

A little more progress this week made on my 40k Sons of Medusa although a lot of the week was spent cleaning and assembling an order of parts from Forge-world.

The test mini for my Sternguard is finished bar the final highlights on the bolter, this model was a reject from Games Workshop that was kept when they replaced the whole box due to faults. While its had green stuff applied and mould lines removed the squads painted from now will have a little more care applied. Its also my first attempt at weathering and battle damage on these models as normally my marines come fresh from the paint shop!

Also started this week is a Librarian, the blue has been base coated and had two highlighting coats applied although the photo has washed them out, a few watered down coats of wash in he recesses should sort this out. The robes will possibly be painted in green to match the chapters armour.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2622.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2621.jpg

You can see my razorback as well as my Librarian in these next pics, its been primed and base coated with hairspray and sand applied, one again its my first attempt at this process so it may or may not work smile.png

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2620.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2614.jpg

Next i've done some work on my Dreadnought, I've tried to show the process the green armour goes through on its way to weathering and chipping etc. The Dreadnought will have an assault cannon and power fist/flamer as its primary weapons although the arms are magnetized to allow swaps. The Dreadnought is also magnetized at the waist to allow a bit of rotation smile.png

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2615.jpg

So whats left from this weeks progress? A few tactical marines have been started as well as work on my company captain, its an old metal mini that's been stripped bare, it is magnetized at the left shoulder to allow a swap between bolter with box mag and the Mechanicum force axe, its also magnetized at the left wrist to allow for a combi pistol or power sword depending on setup. I'm not sure whether to go bare headed or with a helm yet so one again I have magnetized for both options. The jump pack is finished and ready for weathering and possibly some thruster OSL depending on how brave I am.

Finally A look at my Devastator sergeant, i've previously shown this one without the backpack and using an anvil industries rifle, i'm going to replace the weapon with a forge-world sniper rifle and then do some weathering and chipping on him to match the rest of the force.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/5fb93e75-5ab0-46ed-a65b-8bbe6b7c03e2.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2626.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/40k%20Sons%20of%20Medusa/IMG_2625.jpg

And that's that, for one of the slowest and self critiquing painters I know i'm quite happy with the progress made this week. Comments and pointers and welcomed brothers!

Any chance that you could share how you apint those chaps? They look great! I especially like the deep red helmets and how they contrast nicely with the light green armour :tu:

Also, how do you do the chipping/weathring? Do you use a sponge or a paintbrush?

Lastly, the green armour seems dirty in some places; did you use a brown wash or perhaps weathering powders?

Anyway, looking forward to seeing more from ya! :)

loving that green .as for weathering try looking at chaplain mortis thread on the horus heresy http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286088-imperial-fists-model-now-with-added-worldeater-wip/

i think his battle damage would make these look awesome and keep that beautifull flat green colour

just my 2c

The green is a pretty simple recipie, after priming them grey I base coat the models with Vallejo Heavy Blackgreen (72147) Then a 50/50 mix of the Blackgreen and Vallejo Escorpena green is applied. I made my own wash of roughly 1/20 water/paint of Vallejo Tierra Earth (72062) and apply several coats using a cotton bud to clean any excess from the flat panels before it dries. I then highlight with Escorpena green again and then Vallejo Livery Green to the upper edges. The command models etc may receive further highlights depending on how I feel :)

For the weathering seen above it was done with a brush using mixes of boltgun/ Vallejo German Grey and AK airbrush chipping colour.

The weathering is a mix of MIG Dark Mud powder brushed on and then set with Matt varnish and AK Streaking Grime applied with a brush where i thought it would collect.

Just looked at this .. man thats some nice weathering, just subtle enough for me and exactly what im looking for, i'll give it a shot on my next model, thanks.

Also heres a final pic for this week of the captain model etc awaiting attention, for some reason I didnt post it above.

  • 4 weeks later...

Good afternoon Brothers!

Another small update on my painting progress as I struggle to find a recipe i'm going to be happy with and paint easily so I can field a force of marines on the table.

I actually haven't done a huge amount of painting this time as I spent a good week or so prepping, assembling and priming two Tactical squads, two terminator squads a devastator squad and an assault squad. Since my last update I've changed the way i'm painting the green on my marines, i'm ex British forces and decided to try and paint a more realistic green instead of a luminous glow in the dark green teehee.gif

First up is my Razorback, I've layed down the green and i'm more or less finished with it, although once the other colours are completed I may blend in some more edge highlighting.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2693.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2695.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2696.jpg

The lumps you can see in the paintwork is salt fixed via hairspray, once removed the rust coloured base layer will show through.

Next I layed down the green to the body of my dreadnought trying to get some depth into the flat surfaces which is something I've struggled with in the past.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2698.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2697.jpg

Next I have my first Terminator squad, green is completed to one squad member only so far but thought I would show them to get comments on poses.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2699.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2701.jpg

The squad sergeant will be a deathwatch veteran, the fluff side of retaining the shoulder guard etc I have no idea about however I like it so I don't care tongue.png Both arms the head and the right wrist are magnetized in any event so I could change if I was asked nicely lets say be John Blanche or A-D-B lol

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2702.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2703.jpg

Lastly a small amount of progress was made on my librarian with most base colours added although his tabard was finished in the previous green recipe so i'm not sure if i will change that before completing him.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/kroweuk/IMG_2704.jpg

Sorry for the huge wall of pictures, they seem larger than I thought they were when I re-sized them. Comments and criticism are very welcome particularly regarding the change of green and whether people like it.

I'd lean towards the second option, but thats just because of how Space Marines are in general...

Bright colours, almost medieval Knight like in their approach. They want to stand out, and scare the **** out of the enemy.

''Oh ****... Its the Sons of Medusa. Where's the white flag?''

But if you want Camo, go for it, could be cool. The Raptors chapter uses camo a lot, so its not like all Space Marines are the same. smile.png

A very small update today and less of a wall of pics to bore you with :P

Decided to go this way and just detail the green with some understated grey/black trim.  I've base coated the metal ready for shading/highlighting with only the body of the bolter and the power coils of the main weapon to do.  I'm considering doing both the headlights and the power coils in an ice blue with slight OSL, what do you think?

Once painting is complete I can add weathering, pin washes and mud!

Excellent work here, Kronus. I love how smooth the transitions are and how good the colours look; not too bright, not too dark. Also, really looking forward to seeing that Razorback all weathered and beaten up :tu:

Deus Ex Ferrum

Very nice, I love the color. Just one gripe. More bionics, son of Ferrus.. biggrin.png

Yes I agree and disagree to an extent :P I have bionics on order from Anvil and various bionic leg sets from Maxmini, I've also just ordered some helms from forge world to be spread among my veterans etc. I'm of an opinion (rightly or wrongly) that bionics need to be controlled, yes there will be bionics on show however I believe a lot of the bionics that marines receive would still be covered by cerimite armour.

Battlefield augments that are applied in the field would be a different matter but permanent alterations carried out by the home world or battle barge apothecary would be of a greater quality and able to be covered in armour.

Hopefully I wont be sent on a penitent crusade for these opinions lol

Kronus, ive checked out this thread after your comment on my Night Lords Plague Rhino, and I have to say mate this looks awesome. You're "relearning" skills??? I dont think they ever left you. Im in awe of the green youve managed to produce and am now inspired to do my own Sons of Medusa! Seriously man, ive been wondering what colour my SMs would be if and when i ever started a loyalist force and this month-old thread has inspired me to do SoM. Well done! Looking forward to more!

From painters such as yourself I consider this high praise indeed :) Thanks alot, I should have the Razorback finished this weekend, im just putting on a few small chapter and company icons at the moment and finishing the main weapon barrels.

Plus you play a real mans sport so that goes along way lol

Theres nothing quite like charging around full tilt and knocking seven colours of :cusse out of people only to have them pat you on the back and buy you a pint of Guiness afterwards lol of course being 6ft 2 and weighing nearly 20 stone counts for a lot :)  Rugby and bodybuilding i'll be ready for scrumball if its ever 'invented' lol
