Lord Kallozar
hi all I was wondering if there are any paints suitable for warhammer miniatures that actually rust, so it can give models the real rust look? im from the uk so American products wouldn't help me here. cheers. Toomanyprojects
There is a paint in the model railway world (give me an hour and I'll find it for you) that when painted on creates a layer of iron oxide overnight. It comes in two parts and the effect is far from subtle, but it could be very useful if used properly Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286374-paints-that-actually-rusts/#findComment-3584634 Share on other sites
Toomanyprojects
Here you go: turns out I didn't need an hour. I knew alphabetising every aspect of my life would work some day :) youtube.com/watch?v=SH3qORastWE&feature=youtube_gdata_player Copy and paste it :) I can't get the video to show properly Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286374-paints-that-actually-rusts/#findComment-3584638 Share on other sites
Lord Kallozar
that's awesome cheers for the rapid reply. have you used it before? I was thinking of actually using the rust paint on the space marines to give them corroded/rusty armour so would it be possible to make the paste quite thin so that it doesn't ruin or lose the detailing of the space marine armour? Toomanyprojects
I've never used it personally, but I have seen it used to quite spectacular ends. Model railway detail tends to be smaller and more subtle than the detail on GW models. So if it doesn't obscure that then A thin layer, used sparingly would I'm sure work very nicely. However, Might I recommend trying it out on those push fit marines that GW does? It would certainly give you a chance to play before attempting it on a proper model Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286374-paints-that-actually-rusts/#findComment-3584652 Share on other sites
Gurth
I tried using this kind of stuff on some Chaos Marines ages ago, and wasn’t impressed with the results. My advice to paint rust would be to paint it. This isn’t very difficult to do with something like an orange-brown base coat followed by some washes and randomly-applied dots of two or three other orange, brown and/or orange-brown colours. Toomanyprojects
GW has just launched a quite realistic rust paint in its special effects range. I can only repeat that it might be a good idea to try this out on some worthless/ruined models before you put it to full use Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286374-paints-that-actually-rusts/#findComment-3584999 Share on other sites
Xenith
Dear god don't actually put rust on. The models are so small that it wont actually look like rust, and you can just use paint to get something that looks a lot more like rust than actual ruse would. And I'd imagine you'd have to seal an actual rust model. And be up to date with your tetanus shots. And oxidising iron/rust actually smells. Toomanyprojects
It looks like real rust at 1:76 scale :) im not sure about what scale Warhammer is, but it's bigger than that :) You only need to seal this model is you are going to paint over the rust. Might be a good idea to do it anyway though You'd only need Tetanus shots if you stabbed the model through your finger :) I'm pretty sure that no GW model can do that :) at least not since they ditched metal :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286374-paints-that-actually-rusts/#findComment-3585036 Share on other sites
DarkMark
Lots of scale model supply shops will stock rust effects sets. Here's a recent Vallejo reviewed. Bartali
You could in theory get rust by adding water to Vallejo Liquid Silver paint. It has actual metal flakes suspended in alcohol (as opposed to the silicon found in acyrlic metallics), and will rust when in contact with water. However it'll probably look terrible, and your much better off generating a rust effect via paint or powders. Probably my favourite is via a thinned red/brown oil paint.
