Mixing seperated paints

Hi.

I've always ended up with paints that have separated in the pots over time. I heard that adding a small ball to the pot works well as an agitator while shaking them.

Does anyone have suggested balls to use as I want to avoid steel as I've heard they rust in the paint which won't be good.

Cheers.

Anti-bumping garnules might also do the job - if you know anyone who goes to Chemistry labs

e.g.

There are probably enough beads to add to your entire collection of paints..

Did find someone mentioning heamatite beads. 75 for about £2. May be worth a try.

This is what I use.  They have a good weight to them, they are cheap and they can be found at just about any hobby store (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

When the pot is empty, just wash off the bead or pour it along with the last of the paint into the next new pot.

I got some gemstone beads off of ebay, two packets for $6.75 and I haven't used all of them and I have a lot of paints.  I got some 8mm ones and they fit into most of my bottles but I think they were a little to large to fit into my reaper paints.  I think they fit into every other bottle I have including Vallejo though.

Have you ever found them to rust? Someone mentioned they do because of the iron oxide in them.

After at least 5 years of using them, no, I have never seen them rust. I was not aware that malachite would form in the same place that iron oxide would but I suppose anything is possible.

Thank you. Put my mind at rest as I'd already put them in some paints. Made quite a difference too.

Haematite won't go rusty because the iron is already chemically bound to oxygen. It isn't going to get any "rustier" !

I use tin or lead shot (which I use at work) - I've tried various plastic or ceramic beads, even small stones, and I don't find them dense enough. Haematite (or stainless steel, though I would beware of cheap stainless!) sounds ideal to me.

How would they fit into vallejo eye dropper bottles? The opening isn't even 3mm wide. Or am I missing another way to open those bottles?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2

Malachite is a green, very common secondary copper mineral with a widely variable habit.

[edit]

well chalk that up to poor reading skills for me.  I was talking malachite and you were talking hematite.  I use malachite beads that I bought several years ago.

I'm old and senility is setting in.  But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
