Forté
Hi. I've always ended up with paints that have separated in the pots over time. I heard that adding a small ball to the pot works well as an agitator while shaking them. Does anyone have suggested balls to use as I want to avoid steel as I've heard they rust in the paint which won't be good. Cheers. Hemal
Ceramic might be good.. http://www.ortechceramics.com/store/product.asp?prodCategory=17 http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Loose-Ball-Bearing-1-4-Bike-Ceramic-SiC-Balls-/150294965590 Bit pricy though... Forté
You ain't kidding about pricy. Pretty much doubling the cost of the paint. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286477-mixing-seperated-paints/#findComment-3587001 Share on other sites
Gurth
Kids these days … Have you ever considered that it may be helpful to stir the paint with a thin stick? Hemal
You don't get the agitation required using a stick to stir, the ball bearing works better as you can vigourously shake the tub as hard as you like - without really risking spilling it... Hemal
Anti-bumping garnules might also do the job - if you know anyone who goes to Chemistry labs e.g. http://www.thelabwarehouse.com/laboratory-consumables/boiling-chips-anti-bumping/glass-beads-soda-lime-8mm-dia-approx-pk-1kg.html There are probably enough beads to add to your entire collection of paints.. Forté
Did find someone mentioning heamatite beads. 75 for about £2. May be worth a try. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286477-mixing-seperated-paints/#findComment-3587078 Share on other sites
Seleucus
Stainless steel ball bearings should be fine - they are specially coated with a rust resistent coat of chromium oxide and should last years. Fibonacci
Did find someone mentioning heamatite beads. 75 for about £2. May be worth a try. This is what I use. They have a good weight to them, they are cheap and they can be found at just about any hobby store (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc.) When the pot is empty, just wash off the bead or pour it along with the last of the paint into the next new pot. GumbaFish
I got some gemstone beads off of ebay, two packets for $6.75 and I haven't used all of them and I have a lot of paints. I got some 8mm ones and they fit into most of my bottles but I think they were a little to large to fit into my reaper paints. I think they fit into every other bottle I have including Vallejo though. Have you ever found them to rust? Someone mentioned they do because of the iron oxide in them. Fibonacci
After at least 5 years of using them, no, I have never seen them rust. I was not aware that malachite would form in the same place that iron oxide would but I suppose anything is possible. Made quite a difference too. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286477-mixing-seperated-paints/#findComment-3595085 Share on other sites
Shadespyre
Haematite won't go rusty because the iron is already chemically bound to oxygen. It isn't going to get any "rustier" ! I use tin or lead shot (which I use at work) - I've tried various plastic or ceramic beads, even small stones, and I don't find them dense enough. Haematite (or stainless steel, though I would beware of cheap stainless!) sounds ideal to me. Or am I missing another way to open those bottles? Forté
You can take the dropper of very easily. It can be messy but the hole is about 10mm. Just pops back on too. Fibonacci
Haematite won't go rusty because the iron is already chemically bound to oxygen. It isn't going to get any "rustier" ! Hemitite comes from copper that is bonded to carbon from a chemical precipitate. There should not be any iron or oxygen involved. Forté
Fe2O3 is the chemical compound for it. A type of iron oxide. No copper found. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286477-mixing-seperated-paints/#findComment-3595666 Share on other sites
Fibonacci
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2 http://www.mindat.org/min-2550.html Formula:Cu2(CO3)(OH)2 Malachite is a green, very common secondary copper mineral with a widely variable habit. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/malachite a green mineral that is a basic carbonate of copper used especially for making ornamental objects [edit] well chalk that up to poor reading skills for me. I was talking malachite and you were talking hematite. I use malachite beads that I bought several years ago. I'm old and senility is setting in. But that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Forté
Haha. Not a problem. It's always good to hear other options anyway. And even better to know there's a large cross section of ages on here too who all share tips and stories.
