Emperor's consuls redux (a DIY wip log)

Thanks so much guys!  You know I am not exactly sure how long it takes to paint a marine actually because these first two were both kind of prototypes to try and get down the scheme so they took a while when I had to redo things.  Also I do the airbrushing part in a batch of like 5 marines.  I would say they are certainly taking longer than I'd prefer but I am really happy with the scheme so I don't mind it so much.  Once I finish the dread I am sure it will seem like I am flying through finishing marines by comparison!

Sorry for the long delay in the updates but I haven't had much hobby time and what I have had has been split with some fantasy projects.  Anywho I finally finished the bad boy and though I might go back and touch up a few things at a later date for the moment I am pretty happy with it.  It has been ages since I painted something large and it really took more time than I expected.  I think I'll move onto some more marines or something else smaller for the next project to get some quick satisfaction at finishing some minis!

Colours are beautiful, orange really pops against the grey.

Chips are also amazing; as someone who is currently having his first go at doing a 'non-parade ground' army, I feel quite inspired (and a bit rubbish by comparison!laugh.png)

Wow thanks for the high praise but I'm definitely sure I don't get paid for it, especially since I paint so slow!

Strike Captain Lysimachus the chipping effects are actually pretty easy to do once you get the hang of them.  I pick a suitably dark color that works with my main armor colors and then rip off an old piece of blister foam to use as an applicator.  I usually dip the foam in the paint then dab it 4 times on a piece of paper towel to remove excess paint and then just go about applying it.  I focus on areas that I think would show more wear, outer edges, sharp edges, etc...Using the foam gives some randomness and then I use a brush to go in and add/modify what I have done with the foam.  Sometimes there are a lot of small ships that I amalgamate into one larger one or I add in slashes or other shapes.  Then just pick a suitably light color that works with your basecoat and underline the chips.

Slow painting doesn't matter when you're turning out such a good finished project. You've managed to make orange look badass, which isn't easy.

I would really like to see you paint something crazy intricate and detailed - not that the Dreadnought isn't cool, but I'd like to see what you do with a really 'detail-intensive' piece like one of the Primarchs or a heavily converted special character for your Chapter. I know the former option is expensive, it was just meant as an example.
