New Player, First Army, Raptor Chapter WIP

Sadistic Imp

This is something else to take into consideration. I am a firm follower of SM Codex standards. If you are sticking to that as well, Shoulder trim typically denotes company affiliation:

I - White/Silver
II - Yellow/Gold
III - Red
IV - Green
V - Black
VI - Orange/Brown
VII - Pink
VIII - Gray

IX - Blue

X - None

Now, to throw my opinion into the mix. I would go with the yellow trim. The yellow helmet looks excellent with your green. More of that yellow/green mix throughout the squad would be great.

If this is truly your first attempt at painting 40k miniatures you are well on your way to painting some amazing miniatures, now don't get me wrong I have little in the way of critique you seem to have all the basics down pat. If I were to offer any constructive criticism it would be to use the highlight technique for highlighting that you used on the toes of the boot in other areas that the light would hit (top of helm, backpack and shoulder guards) but glaze over them with your base color. But you dont need to do that as you have some sweet painted miniatures!

I was always under the impression that this was strictly for ultramarines, but i can be wrong. This also explains, why there's so few people willing to build seventh companies.

I think a steely silver trim would fit the "no nonsense" feel of this color scheme best.

Imperial Fists in the Codex seem to follow the Ultramarines' own interpretation of Company heraldry (coloured pauldron trim).

Seventh can also be purple IIRC.

As for the three options linked before, I like the yellow trims, but both the other options feel much more military, which I feel suits the Raptors best.

7th is more purple than pink. Used to be Warlock Purple. Pink isn't used by Imperial that I'm aware of. It's reserved for the Emperors own Children ;)

I don't think the Raptors really use the company colours apart from a helmet stripe on the sergeant black helmet. They more go for squad numbers on the knee. Makes sense with them being the main chapter know to actively use camouflage.

You can download the FW Chapter Tactics V2 which has the Raptors

Only know that due to old Index Astartes stuff and I've been looking at a lot of pink and purple of late.

Best bet is companies 2-5 as these are the standard 6 tactical, 2 assault, 2 devastator companies. The others are more specialised.

You're all wrong, it's violet! no.gif

I was going to weigh in and say the grey trim from the third photo caught my attention. I know I suggested yellow trim, and I think that could look good, perhaps for your veterans, to go along with the higher-ranking helmet markings, maybe? I'm keen to see how your black/grey trim worked, anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much about sticking to the codex company markings. Only boring space-smurfs fret about those anyway!

Yep don't forget that according to the ultramarines our reckless disregard for the codex astartes is legendary ;-)

Id go with what you...

A = find visually pleasing and

B = enjoy painting the most

personally I find painting shoulder pad rims a chore. When the enemy sees a Raptor he's dead anyway. We don't need colour codes to know who's killed who, honour and glory are the wicked little sisters of foolishness. Getting the job done is all that matters to us.

Who he disowned.

Emperor: There will be NO pink in my frickin' army, Fulgrim. Got that!

And thus, the Heresy was born...

  • 2 weeks later...

So I haven't yet got around to the weathering but I have finished another four marines. It's been a slow process with work and all. Regardless.

Oh, also changed my bases. The ones you see in this pic will be for my entire army. Also going to load them up with all the little belt packs just to help fit the 'survivor' theme.

I feel my painting is improving :)

Thanks!

These look awesome! And I'm jealous of how well done your FIRST minis are. sweat.gif

The only thing I would point out is the decals. Before applying, go over the spot with a clear gloss like the GW 'Ardcoat. This will give a nice smoth surface for the decal to adhere to. Then get yourself some Microsol/Microset/Solvaset which is a solvent that softens the decal and makes it lay flat and adhere better. Then go over it again with a gloss coat, then when that's dry give it a matte coat (Lahmian Medium or matte spray if you're spraying your models). That will help keep from getting the white-ish air bubbles you see in the edging around the symbol and make it look painted on.

What did I do this time?

Dude, you don't have to do anything. You're the face of the EC. Innuendo is one of your Warlord traits. ;)

I may have to steal that for my sig ;)
