Kilofix
Thought I'd start a thread on units and tactics to use with Deep Striking, Outflanking and Infiltrating. My top picks as CSM and IG are: Harker, IG Vets with Melta, Demo + Chimera with HFlamer against anything dug in. Creed giving Tac Gen to a squad of Hellhounds or Devildogs also against anything dug in. Other options are AlRaheem with a whole Platoon, Huron giving MoD to Chosen or Cypher and Chosen. The thing is, while mostly effective, the above are pretty basic tactics and not too creative. My regular opponents know I'm going to do that and are prepared. One time my whole Outflanking force was decimated by that Inquisitor (with a huge IG blob) that can out of phase fire on any incoming Reserves within 12". Anyone have thoughts or other more creative tactics? Wish Chaos had Pods or Homing :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286573-deep-strike-outflank-infiltrate/ Share on other sites
WarriorFish
I think you answered it yourself somewhat: Inquisitors. I'm not going to say that everyone and their dog will take them to spoil your plans but you must account for it being a possibility. I've never done wholesale on outflanking or infiltrating as it's always been more of a handy device for a few units to get up and disrupt my opponent. Especially for Guard, some outflanking Sentinels can cause far more trouble than their points suggest as they shoot and assault vulnerable rear table units. Given the rest of my army is manoeuvring and shooting their timely intervention can save the day. Otherwise I like Drop Pods for my Marines, but it's just another way of doing the same thing: podding Marines and Dreads engage the enemy allowing the rest of my army to attack easier. So generally speaking cheaper, faster units such as Scouts (including in a Land Speeder Storm) that can get in quick and take out threats is how I like to use them, or as a prelude to a greater assault. From the changes in the game - such as the aforementioned Inquisitors - I think it's become less "reliable". Not so much of a problem for me but I can imagine it making life difficult for certain builds. It would be very interesting to hear from those who run such builds, as I'm sure they've worked out best how to get the most out of the current rules! greggles
+1 Inquisitors. They basically stopped a lot of scout armies in their tracks. For basically the points of a drop pod, you can cover the entire center board with servo skulls, greatly reducing scout and infiltration advantages. SyNidus
Drop Pods, man, Drop Pods. In my long career as a Raven guard player, I've tried all 3 tactics and deep striking is the best way to get in. I like to drop pod en masse. 30 marines in the opponents face from turn 1 is devastating any way you cut it.
