Using Warlord Offensively?

Usually when I run 2 HQs (e.g. Chaos DP and Huron, IG Straken and Creed, etc.), I'll use the non-Warlord HQ offensively but I'll keep my Warlord with a scoring Troop to defensively hold my own Objective. Doing so, unless I get tabled, my Warlord doesn't usually see any action.

But now I'm thinking, doing so might be such a waste of points for an HQ. Maybe I should not worry as much about losing my Warlord nor holding my Objective, but rather stick my 2nd HQ into another offensive unit. Especially if it has Traits (or supporting models) that can benefit an offensive unit.

Thoughts? Do folks ususally run both HQs offensively or do you keep the Warlord back?

Thanks for the opinions.

Your options as CSM may be a bit limited, but if you can take a 50 or 65 point HQ, just do that and reserve/hide it.

Most of the time my options are to have a warlord who can fend for himself and use him offensively, usually risking/giving up the VP. The other option is to have a very cheap warlord and hide it, or play it conservatively and not minding if it dies. The best option is something like Tigurius or a good psyker or other force multiplier who can protect himself/stay out of trouble and still do a lot of work.

Like Ultramarini, I'd take a warlord who is enough of a powerhouse in and of himself to tie up an important enemy unit.

Have you considered getting a daemon prince with wings and black mace? He's a FMC and unless you make him Khornate, he'd also have a psychic power or 2.

It depends on the HQ for me. Divination libby? usually in the back as support. Tarnus Vale? the same.

Lysander? up front. Pellas Mir'san? up front. Chapter Master w/ burning blade and shield eternal? up front.

Support HQ's do just that, support, regardless on whether they are Warlord or not. Combat HQ's want to be in combat, so you put them in the front lines and use their points doing what they do best.

Frankly, spending a heap of points on a warlord like Huron, only to leave him in the back so you don't give away one vp, is counter-productive to me. He could be up front getting you vp's. Not using those points doing what they are meant to do will likely cost you more games than keeping that one vp safe.

I agree with Axagoras, if you're dropping points on a commander he needs to get stuck in somehow. This is war, not only that but Grim Dark war and you don't win by staying at home! Your model's role should be dictated by his capabilities and not if he's the Warlord, leave the cowering to the lesser races ;)

Or if you give your CSM Lord a higher Initiative i.e. The Mark of Slaanesh and put him in a squad of CSM who've been "modified" by Fabius Bile, then you wouldn't have to worry about CC. Having higher initiative lets you get a couple of whacks in before your opponent does. Plus in a challenge Lucius's attacks go up respectively to the challenger/defender WS. Not to mention having Shred and reducing the number of attacks by 1. The rest of the squad can handle themselves.
