Ultramar Defence Auxilia

Hi guys,

Finally managed to get a hold of some IG (after years of wanting some!) and I have decided that because my main army is Ultramarines, it would be cool to have an IG ally as the Ultramar Defence Auxilia.

What I'm stuck on is the colourscheme? Ultramarine iconography is out, so I'm feeling blue armour and a grey or off white fatigues?

I also suck at painting and I'm about as creative as the desk I'm sitting at, so I really do need a veteran to hold my hand here.

Many thanks,

Liam

How about white armour and grey fatigues?

It would give you a nice change from your Ultras but still look really coherent on the tabletop. - Maybe some bits of spot colour in blue?

You could also use Gold and White which would look super good, and still fit with Ultramar

Why is Ultramine iconography out? I mean apart from the difficulty of painting hundreds of little Us?

The Ultramarine iconography is out simply because that is reserved for the chapter - It is THEIR identity and THEIR source of pride (in my opinion), which is why I need to stick around the blue theme to tie them in with the Ultramarines. White fatigues could be a good idea for that clean and crisp, almost pompous look that the people of Ultramar are known for. Also yes, I don't want to paint loads of U's everywhere!

Hendrik... That is almost identical to what I want to do! Only difference I think would be omission of the Ultra symbol, and possibly a touch darker with the fatigues!

My colours for the ultras is Mordian blue followed by Ultramarine blue, highlighted with crystal blue, same again for the PDF?

that's pretty much how i would do them if i were to do it. does ultramar have a heraldic devise it uses? you could use the Ohm symbol instead of the ultra symbol. personally i don't feel using the ultra symbol would be bad, since these guys directly swear allegiance to the ultramarines, and are in a way part of their chapter.

Heresy!! Space Marines aren't allowed any non astarties as part of their chapter per order of Gilliam and his rules set forth in the index astarties.

I suppose the Command Squad could have the Ultra symbol as they are respected enough to actually wear the mark? Just a thought.

The company commander would look as close to a second company marine as possible (gold trim on his tunic for example).

I'm feeling some fluff coming on!

Thanks for the help so far guys! Keep this going!

yes! however, the defense of ultramar is at all times coordinated by the ultramarines. it's like the space wolves and their bondsmen, the kaerl who man their space ships and the fang. ever since the heresy not a single legion/chapter has been able to do all their tasks by marines (and even back then they didn't). it all boils down to this:

would the ultramarines be able to deploy the ultramar pdf in offworld campaigns? No!

Would the ultramarines take command of the ultramar pdf when ultramar is being attacked? Yes, calgar will decide the tactics for the ultramar pdf force to use, where to deploy them etc as the chaptermaster is in absolute control over their homeplanet. at least, that's what i'm assuming, based upon all the space wolf reference material (read battle for the fang, it's a great book and features a lot of information about the fenrisian pdf force, which i can only assume to do similar tasks to the ultramar pdf force)

iconograpthy is an entirely loose subject from it, since in a way it has nothing to do with the actual organisation of the PDF force. However, using the ultramarine iconography would visually tie both armies together very well, as you can see in the example army i posted earlier.

Organisation no, identification yes...

They are affiliated, but separated. So I *think* (could change rapidly!) I'm going to keep the Ultra's colour, leave out the symbols and try to keep it neutral at least, or lean it towards an IG regiment more...

Looks like hendrik beat me to it, but I'll post the link up anyway as this is the B&C version so you may participate if you want :)

I don't see a problem with using the Ultramarine's chapter symbol, it is their PDF after all and don't forget that Space Marines have complete dominion over their worlds so you have a lot of freedom in how you represent them. Why not merge it with a regimental number, that way it wouldn't be identical and would still be Guardy?

I have painted mine using pale blue fatigues, the same blue as my Ultramarines for armour/helmet/boots and coloured the shoulder pad yellow to show that they are deployed alongside the 2nd company.  Command squad and vets gets white pads as command.  Weapons are in red to copy

I started to paint tactical arrows, devastator symbols etc but with hundreds of guard that got silly so I stopped.

Here are some small images I found online of them in action at a game a while ago.  I will post some proper ones if anyone is interested.

Hopefully this link will work, the ogre models count as sentinels to represent the standard training they receive to have the same BS & WS as guard.
