Torbenos
So I've been playing Warhammer on and off for the last nine years but never really put any thought or effort into painting the miniatures til recently when a friend of mine managed to round all of us in the area up and get us active, currently playing a friendly coup tournament, I decided since I lurk here quite a bit to put up a project, both to get criticism and improve but also to motivate myself and see improvement. First of to list everything I've got to paint/assemble. Assembled (Not Painted) 32 Tactical Marines (With Bolters) 7 Tactical Marines (With Special Weapons) 7 Sergeants 10 Scouts 5 Assault Marines 1 Predetor 1 Land Raider Crusader 1 Stormraven 1 Librarian 5 Captains 1 Chaplain 5 Command Squad Marines 1 Techmarine 4 Servitors Still To Assemble 5 Devestators 5 Sternguard Veterans 7 Tactical Marines A fair amount! But I have managed to paint a few things so far! Let's have pictures. Squad Lemarius http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_173531_zpsfd605528.jpg The beginning of Squad Lemarius which so far is 5 Marines strong, I'd say these are my first painted miniatures really and I am fairly content with them although I have since learned I use a bit too much paint on my brush when I paint, I like to think there is some improvement on that later on! In the background you also have the Rhino which is my first vehicle. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172747_zpsf452211a.jpg Brother Cathan Brother Cathan have served in the 5th Company for just over a hundred years now, and have proven himself the marksman of the group ever since his early days. He's earned the Marksman's Badge three distinct times during their engagments with the Tau during the Battle of Peecajunkie when they fought for the bio-mass samples to allow them to engineer a weapon against the enroaching Tyranid Splinter Fleet. Was the third marine I painted, and I was pretty happy with the pose I managed to get him although I shrink away when I see how he looks in a close up photo, amazing what you can pick up then you don't with just your eyes. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172651_zps1ec9687f.jpg Brother Crixus Crixus is a hardened veteran of Squad Lemarius, always a quiet man he is an outsider to the camaraderie which otherwise runs true as blue through the brothers of the squad. Despite his stern and silent behavior however he is a true Ultramarine and have served with distinction for almost two hundred years, and earned his glory long ago during the Battle of Krinx where he struck the killing blow against Captain Tempest of the Hawklords, sending the other Marines into a rout. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_171846_zps8f13b17d.jpg And here you have the beginning of the next member of the Squad, still working on poses I am happy enough with this one I currently have, where he's charging forward firing with his bolt pistol making ready to throw a grenade, with his bolter slung back and attached to his waist. Yet to name this one or make up a background for him, suggestions? http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172050_zps6015bbdc.jpg http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172143_zpse7d9ac9e.jpg http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172130_zps1c79f6f4.jpg Aegis Carrying Squad Lemarius into battle like a trusted steed brings a knight doom to his enemies, Aegis have been attached to the 5th Company for a very long time, It's the first vehicle I have painted and I am quite happy with it, the arrow on top and the name is me trying to freehand something and it went appropiatly poor, but you can atleast see what it is which makes me happy enough. I know I am meant to apply something to the decals to make them shimmer less and now be all plastic although I personally do not remember what it is, anyone here know and feel like sharing? http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172222_zpsc6f83a14.jpg http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172252_zps6e87f53a.jpg http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_172242_zps28d54797.jpg The Dreddddddd, my second vehicle I suppose! Am happy enough with him, although I keep not getting a decal with the V stick to the black knee to mark him as 5th Company, but I keep trying! http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_173642_zpsdc69e78b.jpg Prettiest Marine in my Company, a friend of mine painted this fellow for me since I wanted a cool banner and asked him to put some nice decal on it or a pretty white U, and then he went and freehanded the actual Company Banner, he's a pretty awesome guy! I really love it although I've not used him much since I realised the Banner isn't that good, which is a shame. Close up. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140208_173714_zps33de8d7a.jpg Well as you see in the fancy list at the top, I've got quite a way to go before I'll allow myself to buy more miniatures, decided to save money by not tossing out more until I am done with what I've got. Let's see if I have the willpower shall we? Courage and Honour! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286629-ultramarines-5th-company/ Share on other sites
Ultramarine vet
Very good for starting off! How many coats of paint do you use and what are the colors? Torbenos
First I spray it black and then paint everything that's gonna be blue with Macragge Blue, and then atop of that a layer of Altdorf Guard Blue everywhere except the edges of the previous layer, and then finally I slap on some Ultramarine Blue from the previous colour line leaving the edges of the last layer still there. And when I feel I can bother to try I try highlights with Calgar Blue. So in the end I guess 3-4. Ultramarine vet
Alright. This is what I use. 1st layer the model with Abaddon Black. You can use the black primer but I don't bother. 2nd layer I use is Kantor Blue. A really good blue to use as a base. 3rd and final layer I use is Macragge Blue. Very good, vibrant color. As the first layer, I suggest either white or black. Makes the model look much better after you are done. Just joined, so if I can somehow learn how to post pics on here, I will show you what I've done. UltraRich
Is a good start follow the advice above and then Id invest in some Drakenhop Nightshade wash and Lahmian medium If you hit the blue with a 50/50 mix of them it will run into the recesses and give them some depth. then you are onto highlighting ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286629-ultramarines-5th-company/#findComment-3590171 Share on other sites
Torbenos
I've actually got Drakenhop Nightshade I think, some weeks ago I went and bought all the blue colours listed on the GW site in their painting of the Ultramarines. So Macragge Blue. Drakenhof Nightshade, Altdorf Guard Blue, Calgar Blue, Etherium Blue and Guilliman Blue. I'll see about actually making use of the wash, I am told those are pretty simple although I'll admit I have no idea where I'd put the blue glaze, have been working a little on the highlights though, although I got a shaky hand it seems. Got the fellow I showed above painted. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140209_011021_zps36db6d59.jpg Here I actually got pretty happy with the blue, doing the stuff above and gonna try to do the wash next I am working on it. Again I noticed some black spots in the photo I hadn't before, so that'll get worked over too. The white got screwed up bad, my friend advised me to mix it with Lahmian next time to get it better. I am however very happy with the helmet, actually managed to get decent highlights (for me atleast) onto the brow and the slits in it which was a personal acomplishment. Together with eyes that actually fill out and don't spill over! Overall pretty happy so far. Ultramarine vet
Don't worry. My first paint jobs were absolutely horrifying. You're doing pretty good. Courage and honour! Kronus Stormbringer
As a few others have already said for some of your earliest work the marines look fine, especially since your building a tabletop force and not a display army. My only comment would be to always thin your paints and use a palette never straight out of the pot. A wet palette is a great tool once your used to it. Keep up the good work! Torbenos
Greetings Brothers. So today I tried watering down the colours some and not taking directly from the jar as I was instructed, I gotta say the base layer was better than I had thought. Watering it down and letting it dry really removes the brush strokes that otherwise can ruin it. I think I messed up a bit on the way though, too stark of a contrast between some layers I still need to work on. So my process was. 1. Primed in black spray. 2. Cover it all except helmet in watered down Mcragge Blue, three layers til it was a real pretty blue. 3. Add a layer of thinned Altdorf Guard Blue to the top parts of the armor. 4. Wash with Drakenhop Nightshade, did forget to thin it out with Lahmiam Medium, so my fault there. 5. Add a layer of thinned Ulramarine Blue on the very top of armor to make it lighter. 6. Add a glaze of Guilliman Blue to the darker bottoms of armor. That was pretty much it, I still think it's better than the last one admiteddly, so I'd like to call it progress. Also dared myself to do some highlights. Note, I fixed the blue spot on the chainsword and the spotty black under the shoulderpad after this, photos bring out so much I miss with my eyes. Maybe I ought to get them checked. http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140212_214314_zps9f5df027.jpg http://i1333.photobucket.com/albums/w633/Olsson1027/IMG_20140212_214231_zps2304b275.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286629-ultramarines-5th-company/#findComment-3592873 Share on other sites

Monstra Sumus
The Sergeant is a very good improvement on the first 5 Marines, well done. I look forward to seeing more. Torbenos
So I am looking at these tombkings shields thinking ... would they be good for Storm Shields? But I can't really decide, although they are dirt cheap. http://img.tradera.com/images/517/181228517_17532397-8a7d-42a9-b139-f19348d997d7.jpg Thoughts?
