minigun762
Three was my personal number as well, probably came from Termicide squads. The simple 3 shots = 2 hits = 1 explode seems a good starting point. UltraTacSgt
My regular units capable of the job are: Two Vindicators Melta-bombs on Assault Marines as well as other units Orbital Bombardment 2 Lascannons on Dev squad 6 or so Missiles for AV13 Less frequent units include melta equipped units of various sorts and more Lascannons. Azash
More and more the melta guns are starting to stay at home as I find a mix of Grav and Plasma more optimal. Grav wrecks armor...I ran the math and did a simulation with a dice roller. A unit of TL Grav Cents wrecked a Land Raider 15 out of 15 tries and that was enough for me. Now it's less about what the armor value is and more about how many hull points does it have. A squad of bikers with grav guns (6 shots) can reliably get 2 sixes and that's 3 hp's gone...doesn't matter if it's armor 10 or armor 14. Also if your focus is not trying to pen then things like the eldar shield that downgrades pen's to glances is moot. Ishagu
In the last FOUR games I have played I have run a squad of Grav Centurions backed up by Tigarius. They have literally run entire armies in to the ground, and have ALWAYS destroyed ANY Vehicle they targeted in a single turn of shooting. *Edit* You should have seen the face of a Tyranid player after they came out of a Landraider and killed the Swarmlord AND his Hiveguard in a single turn of fire :-P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/286776-how-many-units-do-you-field-that-can-reliably-kill-av1314/page/2/#findComment-3625873 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Been thinking about this topic and I've come to the following conclusion; reliably killing AV13/14 has become a sort of an army ability for me rather than a unit specific role. What I mean by this is I have hard core melta units of course, in the shape of 2 Tactical squads with melta and combi melta in Drop Pods, who being Ultramarines can re roll misses first turn (I have a third Drop Pod in the list) and combat squad pre game to actually target multiple targets if necessary. The added numbers (20 Marines on your doorstep) are there as a heavy distraction from the rest of the list. The rest of my list consists of 7 lascannons. On their own they don't do much against heavy armour but they wear down heavy armour through sheer numbers. You'd be surprised how many penetrates you'll get when you fire off that many shots a turn! And that doesn't include the 2 Vengeance quad lascannons I'm getting! Sneaky trick: when the 2 Drop Pod squads come in it is a good time to use the Tactical Doctrine right? Well make sure your Chapter Master is standing outside his Land Raider (but within 6" so can embark next turn) and in coherency of a Tactical squad camping on an objective etc (careful planning). As part of the squad he rerolls his shooting too which is great if you've got an orbital bombardment!
