Ultramarines Honour Company

Greeting Brothers.

I started with a small group of SM that my son gave me to paint and play with. Not being at that time much into the fluff surrounding 40K I decided to form an UM 11th coy to be Calgar,s personnel Coy. I am an old wargammer, had a Roman legion as well as being amateur military historian, 500bc to 1000ad. Anyway I was having fun doing my own thing but when I told people what my Coy was I was often called a heretic, such a thing would NEVER happen in the world of 40K. Since then I have gotten more into the fluff and really enjoy it particularly the Ultramarines, ( ok have you finished rolling your eyes, yes you ) as they are sort of Romanish based. So I was in a bit of a dilemma what to do, repaint all of my models and become one of the Coy,s of the chapter?

Well bless the Emperor and our Primarch RG as he had obviously seen my dilemma and formed the Ultramarines Honour Company to fight against the forces of Chaos. Seems that RG made a pledge that the UM would supply a Company to help guard the Cadian Gate. This Coy would be made up of not just UM but also from their successor chapters, so sort of an UM 11th Coy with a bit of the Death Watch mix thrown in.

So now I am building this Coy and since they take members from other successor chapters they do not wear UM armour colours/markings since those from other chapters would not want to give up their colours. Main armour colour is Imperial purple for the Emperor, left shoulder is for unit colour and right shoulder is original chapter colour.

The Coy is based on the Roman legion, ie first squad, or decimus as they are called is a double squad of 2x 10 men Sternguard. 2,3,4,5 are 10 men Tac Squads each with a different squad colour on left shoulder. 6 is assault marines, 7 termies, 8 devs, 9 centurions, 10 snipers. Plus Company captain and command squad. Each squad has its own Rhino and Drop pod. Attached units of fast attack, bikes, attack bike, landspeeders, storm talon. Heavy support, Predators and whirlwinds.

Well brothers what do you think, I have found some fluff online about the Honour Company as well as getting hold of White Dwarf 286/7 and the codex Eye Of Terror which have them mentioned. Looking for more fluff so if anyone knows any more could you let me know and looking for digital copies of WD 281/3

Any and all positive suggestions/ideas gratefully received, TY

Ultramarines

The Ultramarines Honour Company is a specialized Company of Ultramarines that have been stationed at the Cadian Gate for many millennia, rotating officers and warriors from Ultramarines Companies elsewhere and also drawing from the Ultramarines Successor Chapters.[1]

Overview

The current commander of the Honour Company is Captain Echion, a member of the Patriarchs of Ulixis Chapter. The Company is made up mostly of Ultramarines, but it is not unusual for Marines from Successor chapters to volunteer for the Honour Company's service. As the Ultramarines resources have dwindled following the First Tyrannic War, Marines that are descendant from the Ultramarines are becoming more common.[1]

The Honour Company has been active in the 13th Black Crusade, distinguishing itself early in the war. Their first action was a space-borne counterattack against Abaddon's fleet as thePlanet Killer closed on the Agri-World of Lortox. The action bought the world's PDF time to evacuate a significant portion of the worlds population before the planet was blasted to pieces by the accursed Chaos starship. In the aftermath of the Lortox evacuations, the Honour Company was redeployed to Cadia and the surrounding systems, launching a series of operations to hinder Abaddon's forces as they invade the Fortress World. These attacks have included boarding actions against Chaos Space Hulks being used to transport hordes of The Lost and the Damned. In total, the Honour Company has disabled or destroyed 3 such Hulks, stranding an estimate 600,000 CultistsMutants, and Traitor Guard in the depths of space. A fourth hulk, codenamed Herald of Grief, was destroyed in a boarding action which saw an estimated 200,000 Chaos renegades killed.[1]

Ultras Honour Co. is certainly very cool, however I'm not sure I've read anything that suggests that the contributing Chapters change their colour schemes while serving? In fact, you said yourself in the top post:

since they take members from other successor chapters they do not wear UM armour colours/markings since those from other chapters would not want to give up their colours

My understanding was that the Honour Co. is pretty much like a Crusade force i.e. units/squads from several Chapters fighting as a whole, but each keeping their own colour schemes/markings/whatever, but tied together by wearing a Crusade badge somewhere on their armour (In examples shown by GW this is often a simple geometric shape combined with a symbol, like a white skull on a red diamond or something).

So in the Honour Co. you'd have squads painted in the normal colours of the Genesis Chapter/Novamarines/White Consuls/Aurora Chapter/... etc, but all wearing somewhere on their armour the Honour Co. badge (in my head, a kneepad/shoulder pad/coloured shape in blue with the Ultras U badge in white makes sense)

If you're set on the purple, have you considered making up your own roman-themed Ultramarines Successor Chapter?

Greeting Brother Captain, ty for your thoughts much appreciated. The repainting idea is based on the same way that the armour is repainted when a SM joins the Death Watch so they have a look of unit cohesion while having their original chapter on their right shoulder as with Death Watch. I had two thoughts on how each is recruited to the Coy. Since it was formed on a pledge by their Primarch I would suggest that he would have chosen from among his best troops to reflect well on the UM. Or else they were chosen from each Coy of the UM by their Captain who took the opportunity to weed out those who were shall we say less than pure UM  in their hearts. The troops who were a bit undisciplined and wild. I have been enjoying reading your story about the Iron Gods, truly wild lads of the imperium! I have been toying with a similar idea that I would like to do sometime in the future. It is an all bike chapter called the One Percenters and like your IG they are less than ideal astartes. Wild, undisciplined, hard drinking, smoking, tattooed, always trying to get into the Sisters Of Battle's pants, picking fights with other chapters just for the fun of it etc etc. Each squad of the Chapter would be its own club with distinct colour patches and sworn to the club and the brothers within. Anyway just an idea for now, again ty for taking the time to reply.

Greetings my brothers, well I have come  cap in hand to hear the wisdom of the legion Astartes. I love the Ultramarines Honour Company concept and am going to build a company to suit, not just UM's but successor chapters as well.

So my question is this, Roboute Gilliman made an oath to provide a Coy to serve at the Cadian Gate.

If I was to write the fluff around this oath and the formation and make up of this company, including colour scheme would I be stepping on purist toes? I cannot find any reference to RG's oath word for word and so therefore as the foremost battle master of the Imperium i,m am sure he would have written a full explanation of the companies founding and its format.

your views would be appreciated and advice, whether I take notice of it or not input is good

I've merged the two topics. The new one was nothing more than a continuation of the old one, which was still on the front page.

To answer your question - some "purists" (poor word choice) will take umbrage at anyone developing anything that doesn't mesh with their interpretation of the lore. Some of them may even tell you that you shouldn't do something or that you should do something. However, how you enjoy the hobby is up to you. If you decide to expand upon the lore in an area that Games Workshop has left undeveloped, feel free to do so. Just be prepared for negative feedback from those that don't like it.

I can't think of any instance in which Games Workshop fleshed something out without pissing someone off.cool.png
