Printing white decals; a serious question

Recommended Posts

Many thanks for the reply, Discord. It's a lot to think about. I used to be a small business consultant so I know about a lot of the hidden costs and considerations for something like this. I'm going in with my eyes wide open and my expectations low. Looking over the options out there, I'm stymied by the very lack of it. Most of what I find is based on a sort of tribal knowledge that printers surely understand, but not lay folk. I'm wiling to learn, but your point about the quality maybe not being up to par is very concerning. I frankly assumed that anything I'd be printing would be perfect, of course... Maybe the cheap printers are just that. I'm also concerned now because I read that that 3200 model OKI was Windows-only. I guess I can run Winblows stuff on my Mac, but let's get out of the Stone Age! Most designers use Macs, and that's what I've got. I'm sure it can be worked around, but I love not having to run Parrallels or Boot Camp. I'll deal anyway. But, yeah, I don't think I want to blow 2 grand on a cheap solution only to find the results sub-par. I need to find someone who has worked with these printers, frankly.

Surely anyone wanting you to spend thousands on equipment will be happy to provide a demonstration or just a sample of the output from the printer? And couldn't that be a page of your choice on the paper you prefer? That would allow you to see whether the OKI can actually do what you want it to.

I don't know if I can find one locally. I see Staples sells some OKI printers, but not the ones that print white. They're a very niche thing apparently. I'm sure they're pretty much the same as the non-white printing ones, so maybe I can try out a normal one at the store and check to see how fine it is.
