Mortarion's Heart (Spoilers)

So i've just finished listening to it, my first audio book. What did people think?

I like how we're starting to learn more about the chapters hierarchy, even if they squabble much more then I expected them to.

They also made the fight seem somewhat believable, instead of 'Draigo beats him with 1 hand behind his back' like what was inferred in the codex.

It was also heavily hinted that Janus is Garro, at least from what I know of the HH series.

(Spoliers) He got knocked about by Mortarion, just managing to parry his blows. The battle went downhill from there untill he dropped the True Name bomb which blew Mortarion up. He was basically in pieces when Draigo engraved his heart, still alive but parts were all over.

What of the two Deathshroud that I understand he was to have basically 'slapped aside' to get to Mortarion ?

From first spoiler bits I read previously it seemed as if they just dropped a deuce on everything that wasn't Draigo...  (kinda like - yes Draigo is awesome, yeah he can slap a few termies and primarchs around with his little finger when he's angry...)

The idea of the true name and blowing Mortie all over sounds a bit more like it...  But, if you ask me, Draigo should be slapped about a bit for being so macabre ! (ok ok so I am DG biased :D )

The Deathshroud are hit with a psychic blast, then shot at. He finishes them with his sword, its not exactly a 1 vs 1 duel scenario.

The fight with Mortarion goes very badly for the most part. How easily Mortarion takes out the previous Supreme Grand Master should please you DG fans.

The last GKSGM didn't get chance, he needed to be in contact with Mortarion to pass it on. It was kind of like a mental suitcase bomb that was rigged to blow when opened. Draigo didn't actually open it so he never knew the name. He passed it into Mortarion when Morty pinned him down.

Mortarion killed his predecessor and paladin bodyguard with a toxic mist that melted their skin and armour.

The name itself was not known to anyone except the GM who found it in HH records and the SGM. With a name you can control a daemon or bind it, so for safety, they never told the rest of the GK incase Mortarion found out and wouldn't fight them. The plan was to bind him permanently.

What did you hear to suggest Garro? I heard Mortarion elude to Janus being a traitor legionnaire but I didn't hear any indication it was Garro (unless I missed it)

I have limited knowledge of the HH, only reading a few books, mainly flight of the einstein, but Draigo says Janus was the first to confront chaos. Morty takes the mick out of him saying 'oh noble, pious Janus' then says he was a coward seeking some half imagined redemption who betrayed his legion.

To me, Garro was the first against Chaos, the fact that Morty seems to know him and that he was from a traitor legion.

The betrayal and cowardice would be from Mortys point of view. His own captain flees on the Einstein and is ashamed of the Death Guards actions, fighting against his own brothers and going against his primarch.

in terms of of "betrayal and cowardice” that's exactly how I took it. In the classic belief "the devil mixes lies with truth" The way Morty pitches it makes you think Janus could have betrayed the imperium. But we knowthose who did not side with their parent legions and fought against are of course another type of traitor. I just didn't think I heard enough to pinpoint Garro. I did not remember the part about the first to confront Chaos however.

I had a read through the script after I listened to it. Draigo mentions that he was first. Like I said though, I may be wrong. I'm only familiar with Garro and Loken so there may be others that would make more sense.

One think I had mixed feelings about was the naming of all 8 GMs. It gave alot more insight into the leadership but it knackers up my fluff.

Liked the inclusion of the Dreadknights also, if only an appearance. I actually like the idea, and to see usage of them helps me feel comfortable with the new units. Paladins included.

Well yeah, but the GM's aren't immortal. You could always set your timeline backwards to before the current leadership.

Sounds like the audiobook was good. I'm still gonna wait for the text version though.
