I am working on several things and am I am always looking for input and advice. Rather than clutter my termie thread I will start this one and use it as an ongoin thread for all my work.

As the title says I am retired and I do have a sleep disorder, so being as it's winter time my hobby gets lots of hours smile.png

To practice my painting I dug up a rhino out of one of my scrap boxes and started building it. I soon discovered that the "back" wall was missing and I had to fabricate one.

The wheel in the corner is going to be a base for trophy pile. It will be covered with helmets, skulls, shoulder pads, and a few weapons. I figured the variety will let me practice the different colors and add something to the rhino when it's finished.

I also added the screens above the seats and attempted to make heart rate monitors. Partly to fill the empty space and party to show the rhino as a CnC vehicle.

More to follow I am sure and as always any advice, pointers, or general C&C are welcome.

Very nice wall. I usually glue hatches shut so I don't paint the insides. Be interesting to see what you come up with.

Have to say, I like your honesty too. There's time I wish I had a bit of insomnia. Unfortunately, I have a tough of the opposite.

Progress looks good, really like those heart rate monitors, kind of reminds me of the assault vehicle in the movie Aliens where it has the read outs on the squad. The hazard stripes are a nice touch as well.

I had a plan similar to the trophy idea but instead it was going to be a xeno container holding tyranid parts.

I really wanted to do a dissecting table with sound pick-ups and external speakers (night lords LoL), but just didn't have the room. If I can manage to pull off the trophy pile I may try the original idea with a land raider :)

I like the container concept too. Maybe for a small Ordo Xenos team vehicle..........

EDIT- started adding my trophies. Compartment is smaller than I thought. By the time I am done the stack will be at the ceiling

I think the pile is high enough. If I add more it will be on the floor or the seats. I do like the out come and I enjoyed the practice. Except the yellow. I now remember why I will never do an Imperial Fist army.

Thoughts?

@ Forte - I was torn between having an abundance of Dark Angel pieces for storyline or a little of everything for painting practice. Should the BL pieces not be in there? (edit - did you mean the Black Legion shoulder or my Legio shoulder?)

@Showatah - Thanks!

Yea, I put an Iron Warrior helmet in there too. I suppose there is no loyalty in the Long War :)

Loyalty? I'm working on an Emperor's Children. Loyalty means nothing even within your own Legion ;)

Well the right door was missing too. I decided that if I had to fabricate one I may as well try to "fancy" it up a bit.

I will hide it under some chains and skulls I suppose. Any sculptress have any tricks on achieving symmetry or does that just come with practice (if at all)?

Niiiccee! Did you do the skull yourself as well? If so thats really good, only thing i would say is make the brow sharper and the malar surface ( the bottom bit of the eye, yes i had to google what bit it was xD ) pointer a little like this

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110316070947/warhammer40k/images/1/12/Night_Lords_Livery.png

maybe not to that extent but make it a bit more menaceing ?

For symmetry it's a bit of practice which I need alot more of in that area myself. Try covering half of what ever you have sculpted and then see how it looks, then cover the other half and play spot the difference its just a case of reworking it till its as symmetrical as you can get it really... but hopefully someone with more knowledge and experience can give you better advise smile.png.

@ Squeaky - I am not nearly good enough to do skulls yet. I cut that skull out of an old kit and glued it to the door. I added the wings around it with brown stuff modeling putty. I tend to fail at the left side consistently when I built just about everything. Maybe I am holding the knife wrong or something? Thanks for the advice though I will try to do the " hide a side" thing out.

@Surreal - I have to admit I have tried flipping things over. That's why I think I am holding the knife wrong. It's just a matter of retraining my brain I guess. I get scrambled a little when I flip things around.

I added some chain and will add some to the other side as well. I will carry the trophy pile idea to the outside and have helmets and skulls and pads from the chains. I am thinking a few small piles on top. I will name her " Altar of War".

I am thinking of adding a magnet to the front armor. If I ever play again I can swap out a small trophy pile with a stack of whoever I am playing against. My little way of saying " We have come for you" smile.png

Oh fair enough still a good job on the Viii and wings. The thing that helped me the most ways diving in the deep end and making a model from scratch, as my dad said the best way to learn is to make mistakes. With things like green stuff and brown stuff it's easy to pull or strath off if you don't like :)

Anyway the chains do cover it nicely but you still get to see it aswell :) cool idea with the magnets as well you would have quite a collection of trophy piles to add up to all the possible armies mind you hehe.

Made some progress on the right side.

I have a whole army to build so I will for sure be using that advice in the future ppotts and Squeaky. Cut it, trim it to fit and fill the gaps with more GS. Makes perfect sense really.

Started on the top trophies and art work. I really need the practice as this will make my second attempt at large freehand. The first was an Imperial eagle on a dreadnaughts leg casing. This is a practice piece so I figured "might as well", I won't improve if I don't practice and all that :)

As always any pointers and C&C would be welcome. Yea, I know it looks like a blind guy with three fingers painted it while he was drunk. That's why I need the practice LoL

daniel day lewis used just his left footdevil.gif

i think you made a very presentable job on the rhino top ,for the pile of skulls you could put a little light shading in places to give a more 3d element,

also if you used a slightly lighter blue and ran the edge of the brush rather than the tip over some of the top edges of the rhino itself it would give a nice edge highlight

I might be better off with a foot :)

I was thinking of maybe using a small craft sponge to do the edge work when I start doing it. I have done a few lines here and there but the bulk is yet to be started. I will try the edge of the brush rather than the point, thanks for that. Shaky hands are a waste of Kolinsky brushes sometimes I swear wallbash.gif

Thanks for the input daemonclaw I may sound flippant but I do take advice to heart.
