Started on the Devs and their transport as they are the only models I haven't painted before. I kinda wish I could add them to my army now :)

Look like an Ultra so far?

Thanks Flint - I wanted him to look beat up. I just finished rereading Fear to Tread. The left leg is my most intricate mechanical work so far.

Yeh it looks awesome as does the figure can we get a close up of the left leg :D? That's a great blue for a smurf.. Bloody smurfs xD

@ Squeaky - the leg (whole mini) is primered and I have started painting it, so no close up right now I am afraid. As soon as I get some color on it I will get some pics!

As to the Blue it better be *perfect* as it came from a can :) Its GW blue spray with Vellejo Ultramarine Blue applied and GW Teclis Blue lining. Pretty safe bet all around for an Ultra I would assume.

GW have changed their paints so I am really really hoping I will be able to recreate the color I got for my "Red Angel" conversion a long time ago.
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/meadows88/RedAngelcomplete1.jpg

That is the reason for the brown undercoat and the flesh wash. I am hoping to do all my Blood Angels in a similar color. I just have to stumble upon the right combination.

I think P3 has the closest reds that I am looking for.

I added the gold to give him a little bling. That with the bionic leg should be enough to say "veteran".

As always any advice or C&C is always welcome.

@flint - thanks :)

I went on a kick when I first got the collected visions art book and tried to make a few of the pictures. I was going to try to make the entire set of that whole group with the red angel. However, common sense and my abilities got the best of me hahaha

I ended up finishing the "Red Angel" and Captain Ventanus of the Ultramarines before I deployed and stopped.

Thanks for all the likes everyone. I am glad people still enjoy the "Angel" though I only posted him for a color comparison :)

I just can't seem to get the reds warm enough. I think they are passing for a Blood Angel but not exactly what I am looking for. Pretty much the same boat I was in with my Night Lords for the longest time.

Any ideas or C&C would be great. Especially on where I went wrong with red.

I would recommend that you check out the Vallejo Paints if anyone in your area stocks them.  There are several color comparison charts on the internet so you can find a perfect match for your old red.  The nice thing is that Vallejo doesn't change their entire paint line every few years.  I honestly believe that Vallejo is superior to the GW paints in every way.  I switched to their paints years ago and gave away all of my GW paints, their that good.

I can second that. I'm about 50/50 with GW and Vallejo right now, and I'm absolutely in love with their airbrush line.

Just make a clean break from the GW paints Flint like ripping off a bandaid.  Those GW paints are a waste of money.  Their brushes are a joke as well.  I bought their Heavy Metal brush set a few years ago as they were supposed to be Kolinsky Sable.  One of them just had all of its bristles fall out.  I used the brush twice and took care of it.  Get some Raphael or Windsor & Newton brushes.  Nirvana.

@Disease - I drug model chain through super glue and let it dry. Then I used three pieces to make it seem like the "angel" was straining at the chain when they were actually holding him up :)

@Mikhail - thanks again. I mixed Vallejo Gory Red with a Beasty brown as a base then washed it with P3 red ink and lined it with old GW Flesh Wash. I am MUCH happier with the progress to this point

I have the P3 main paint set, the Vellejo Gaming Color set, and about 1/5 of GW current line. I am still using what let of my silver case paint sets while I can. I brush paint so I use products from all three companies. I do see myself trying to use an air brush in the near future though which will see me go primarily Vallejo I would assume.

EDIT- I bought the master brush set when it first came out ( mostly for the box and Bolter casing :) ). They are the primary brushes I use. Now that you have given such a low review of them I have a viable excuse for my lack of improvement over the years hahahaha

Working on my Centurion's transport.

Yes, I am still goin to use it as a learning experience if I can.

First attempt at "mudding" on a vehicle.

I need to touch up the battle damage and lot of weathering left on the blue. I just applied (heavily) browns up with a torn sponge until i got to a light tan. Once I got to my lightest color I flicked some along the front runner when when I was finished. Not god awful for using normal paints.

My pigments are still shot in my Vallejo game color set. Added malachite ball to each shook them all till I look like I've never met a woman and more than half of them are still ruined.

Then today I found this:

I didn't even know such a thing existed. I am thinking the Emperor smiled on my painting today.......

Just wanted to share my good fortune.

@mikhail - I am not going to say the brushes were my problem but I went out and bought some new ones including a Trumpeter P02. After the first use I can tell a world of difference over my GW master brushes.

Still have a way to go, but it is by far the best face I have done and I didn't change my technique, so I am giving credit to the brush ( and you by default). So, thanks for the second time.

Second vet squad member is coming along. I have to say, GW really made the Sternguard a joy to work with.

Wish I could have made progress like this during the ETLIII (but at least there is all great news on that front)

Any input on what to improve on is always welcome. I am using this project as a learning experience as well as a penance vow.

If the guy in the middle is an example of what you're going for as a finished piece, I don't think there *is* much to improve. We're looking pretty awesome so far.

Your cloth, faces and metals look deep with plenty of definition, and your blues and whites are very crisp and rich.

If I had to pick a tiny something... hmm... maybe one step higher highlight on the ultramarine blue on a few edges? Maybe the scar tissue on storm bolter guy is half a shade to bright. Other than those tiny things, aces! Aces I say!

Always room to improve Flint :) I can see years of improvement just from the changing of my brushes*. I am constantly "fishing" for tips, tricks, and hints. Not a lot to be done with Ultras I will admit, but I did find a nifty trick for freehanding the chapter badge.

I am wondering how much variation there should be in the "blues" of the armor. Each marine is going to cherish and maintain his own suit and each suit is going to be different. Should there be subtle variations in shades for the blues to reflect that?

*I am going to have to paint a chaos marine soon to be sure I have not chosen the wrong team based on painting skills LoL

Work is coming along. The commander is nearly finished.

The vet squad is half done and waiting for the drop pod to arrive. The scouts are next on the block.

I just could not bring myself to give away a space marine army that was missing Termies. So, while at the store today I grabbed a box and Huron for a veteran SGT :)

Passable for an ultramarine vet sgt?
