I am thinking of bastardizing some names from the old Sagas. Tragically I've read the eddas, myths, as well as the histories of a few northern civilizations, but for the life of me I can't recall a single name :)

I need to research the Celts and Pacts for some inspiration, but feel free to offer any ideas thoughts you have.

Hmmm, well you always have names like Sigurd, Halfdan, Rollo, Erik etc.

I sometimes like to look up norse naming websites for ideas...

http://www.viking-mythology.com/index.php

Sometimes if you have a name, or atemperament in mind for your model it helps to come up with designs, for example the bulk of my helmed terminators will wear black helms with the lower parts in red, to denote that they have been blooded (stolen shamelessly from IA11).

My Raptor is named Night Fury, because my son likes how to train a dragon, but I couldn't call it toothless :D so, dragons are its theme, Valkyrie names will be themes for my support vehicles.

Warlord chronicles by Bernard Cornwell are a good read. The pale horseman, the last kingdom etc..

Do you want to go with tribal designs, celtic/norse designs, pictish, or just something of everything?

Okay off to bed for me...

Yes, the Lodbrok family is a great source for names smile.png ( and my current hair style LoL), however I am leaning towards naming my Dreads after famous weapons. Fluff wise, they see themselves as less than Astartes and more as tools of war as they no longer feel the "rush" of combat.

I was going to simply have the trophy skulls hanging from leather cords but hair was mentioned by Augustus in the Arena thread so I had to try it

The grey work will be dirtied up quite a bit when I start applying inks and oil paints so that is not the final color by any means.

As always any C&C, tips, or other input is welcome.

So the dreads are very grey with splashes of color for obvious reasons and I put them on urban rubble bases.

Should I add mud to break the monotony of the grey maybe?

In a shameless ripoff of Dantay_xv's style I tried to emulate his tribal designs on my Dread (as a reminder that he challenged me in the Arena and because it looks great on his guys)

I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination and I now have even more respect for the work that people do, especially on such a small scale.

That looks flipping amazing.

Very much like this design

I like to trawl the internet from time to time and look for ideas, so I have set up a few galleries on here to store them, like:

PS your models dreads are looking ace..

That's what I used as a concept. My freehand is simply not up to it :) I could tweak it a little more with brown and gold, but i'd most likely damage what I have to be honest.

I have a wolf I may try on the torso but no way that's happening without a transfer LoL

I'm glad you like it and thanks for the compliments.

My suggestion would be to get some modelling masking tape a pen and a very sharp knife.

Draw out the design you like on masking tape, or a simple version. Stick the tape to the model, and using the knife cut out the design, giving you a stencil to work from.

At the very least you have an outline to work on top of.

Great work though, what sort of wolf design are you going to go for?

I have decent transfer paper, I just have to mess around and learn how to use it. I should be able to get it the right size and then use it as a stencil I would hope.

I'm thinking this image on the right torso of the dread

Thanks for the pointers on the masking tape. I may give that a try too.

Thats a really cool picture.

With the masking tape, varnish before sticking on to reduce the risk of the tape pulling at the paint. Also household masking tape is okay, but the stuff i used damaged my paint. Modelling masking tape (tamiya) is much better.

Progress on the second Dread of the talon

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/meadows88/Mobile%20Uploads/CBA2E09B-59B1-4090-8460-99BCAC292A63_zps7wugfvcn.jpg

There will be three all together. Two will simply have Arabic numerals on their shoulders and the third (ancient) will have a name and his chest scroll as well as a roman numeral on his knee (rather than a rune). The concept is he is the "first wolf" a hold out from when the VI Legion were less feral, if that makes sense.

Thoughts?

Gave him the helmet with optics just for a little additional variety in the talon

DSS7 - Thanks smile.png

Flint - I'll take warm and fuzzy I guess LoL There are only so many way I can make a dread "wolfy" and I wanted variety to go with the wolf teeth and charms

Radiation - Thanks He's the first of my two "Greyhunter" Dreads so I wanted a more experienced look. Hence, wolf pelt and tails with spiked armor rather than the leather straps and skulls of the "Bloodclaw" Dread I did first.

Helterskelter - We all know FW will make the SW Dreads beautimous. I have four converted Dreads which will leave me room for two new Dreads when FW finally shows us some love smile.png Thanks for the kind words

Progress on the last Dread

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/meadows88/Mobile%20Uploads/12C24D40-EF38-4FCB-B443-824199C4E440_zps7zuqhf2x.jpg

I want him to look abused and worn, like he refuses/fights against maintenance. His time is done, he is weary of of the savagery of the Wolves (he is a warrior of the XI Legion) and is ready to die a good death. Hard to tell a story like that on a miniature I suppose smile.png

Any ideas on how to do it better would be cool or reasons why it is just "too far out there" for fluff would be welcome as well.

Thanks for taking a look.

Trying to decide if I should add damage to the weapon arms.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/meadows88/Mobile%20Uploads/D1C1CBF9-923B-4D44-AECC-840EC9A3EFC3_zpswkkotjw0.jpg

The arms are magnatized to be swapped around the Dreads and just having three with age/damage seems out of place to me.

Thoughts?

What a pain "sea green" has turn out to be :) the miniature is a joy to paint though

I'll work on his face a bunch more and then I should be able to base him. I'm not really sure how that will go? I'm up in the air as to whether I should go industrial (flight deck) or dirty up the mini a little and put him on a battle field. We'll see I suppose.

Any C&C is always welcome and thanks for taking a look.

For the Sea Green I mixed

2 parts Vallejo Model Color Verdigris Glaze

1 part P3 Gnarls Green

I added Verdigris for a highlight. Over a naked mini (no varnish) I washed it with a 90/10 mix of spirit and black oil based paint. I added a little paint and hit the areas I wanted darker (if I messed up I just "erased" it with pure spirit).

It's important to note two things: 1) I'd never paint more than one mini like this because it's too time consuming and 2) you have to be very light on the brush or the spirit will take off the layer of acrylic paint that is already laid down.

I hope all that makes sense.

You get to play with all the cool stuff!! I am not allowed any of ta stuff out here on the rigs (spirits and the like) I can't even carry Humbrol acrylics as they have a wee red box on them. (anything with a wee red or orange box on it is not allowed as carry on. Even milliputt is banned as it has a wee box marking it as an irritant).

The best I can hope for is pigments maybe if they canbe set without the aid of an alcohol based agent. Oh and no sprays either.

I got GW paints as they are "safe".

Anyhoo rant over, looks great. He seems a little icked off though, wonder which hapless soul he is about to yell at?
