Starting with no units on the board

The condition is small, but Fliers are now no longer 'musts', becuase you 'can' start on board.

Much like TDA isn't a 'must'.  TDA 'can' start on board (just with vastly less restrictions than Fliers - There's also the Tyrannid War Vet Dataslate, so Talons aren't 'musts' either...).

Drop Pods still are though.

(The way everyone would play it would of course be that any Flier that starts on board *is* counted, and others aren't.  Before I get flamed/lynched!)

But then we're back to 'must' with a condition.

TDA *must* enter play from reserves.   If you want to use it's Deep Strike ability.

Does that mean we can discount all TDA?  Discount all TDA we want to Deep Strike?

We don't discount TDA that is entering play via Deep Strike, as that suit of TDA *can* start play on board.  You've just chosen not to.

Any Flier you have *can* start play on board.  You've just chosen not to purchase the Skyshield.

Or the other way of looking at it is that if you don't have a skyshield then your flyers must start in reserve.

That's the same as saying if you want to Deep Strike your Terminators they must start in reserves.

Yet we don't discount them.

No it's not. Terminators always have the ability to start on the board. Flyers in an army with no skyshield do not. Therefore they must start in reserve.

Well, assuming that a player has purchased a Skyshield and paid the points for the relevant upgrade, I assume that would be because he wanted to take a flyer that was on the table first turn. As the rule only applies to one flyer and that flyer is on the table, ie not in reserve, I don't think anyone would be arguing that you would need to ignore it for the purpose of working out number of units that can be placed in reserve.

No, its not the same.

If you have the option to Deepstrike A unit of terminators but MUST Deepstrike atleast all but one, the remaining TDA would fall under the 'must' clause because its something you 'must' do.
