Imperial Navy squadron

Recommended Posts

I'm attempting to scratchbuild a squadron of Thunderbolt fighters using the JSV templates. I've been following the works/advice of the plasticard sorcerers machinator, subtle discord and blackadder, but nothing on this stupid thing is coming out the way it should. I'm using a metal straightedge and utility knife for major cutting, filing the edges and also using an old toothbrush handle to press the ridge back down on the cut edges. The interior frame is reinforced with Lego blocks. The structure is 1mm and the detail bits are 0.5mm.

As you can see, I used a LOT of squadron green putty to fill gaps, and I've about given up on making the cockpit canopy fit. Since the earlier pictures, I had to tear the left wing off and straighten it out. I don't think any two pieces have fight properly together. Any advice?

It looks pretty straight thus far, I can't see what seems to be the problem. Some things You need to remember are:

-account for wall thickness

-start from the most horizontal, flat, bottom, center part You can find, it's easiest to build up in various directions later

-try dividing the model into sections- tail, center, front etc. and screw them together later

-plan the thickness of wings and stabilisers in the beginning (i used 4 mm, i think, and 3mm respectively)

-build up some internal structure with 2mm plasticard (you can glue two layers together for ease/best results)

-glue the templates onto plasticard with watered down pva glue

-making long parts sucks, You can alleviate by cutting the template of such a part in half, making two halves out of plastic, gluing them together with pva, adjusting so that they look the same and then gluing the mirror image pair onto another layer

You can also check out these two threads (one is mine) which touch up on the subject of working from templates to build flyers:

I prefer the first method for making wings, but it's obviously entirely up to you. It's looking good so far, I'm going to be following Your thread and possibly showering You with unwanted advice;)

Well the wings are 2mm in total; 1mm structure with 0.5mm details on both surfaces. The overall structure breaks down to fuselage, wings, engine blocks and three tail fins. I thought about gluing the templates to the plasticard but at 7.50$ each to enlarge them to 155% from their print out size that is too pricy for me atm. And no advice is unwanted, otherwise I wouldn't have posted asking for help.

This fail prototype is my "derpy pattern" Thunderbolt that I will use for testing paint schemes.

PS: Lesson one I learned from this project is don't ask friends who don't play 40K for advice on naming your squadron.. you get suggestions such as the Galloping Thunder:cusss..

7.50$ each

That seems... harsh? Is it the patoroch template? Because i clearly remember those have blank unpainted templates included, which should be printed out for pennies. Is it still possible to send files through PMs? I've been printing out those templates on a standard A4 printer and have encountered no problems whatsoever. You can find them here, although You're gonna have to do a bit of guesswork as it's all in russian. So You click on the image in the gallery, click the link under the image that appears and click download top right corner:

are the Stroming Thundertits out of the question? It's combining thunderbird and a smart, territorial bird in one name, shouldn't be too bad ;) And You've got a painting scheme cut out for You already- the sombre tit plumage pattern would look good i guess.

I'm using the JSV templates, which state to print them out 1:1. Unfortunately this makes the wingspan a little over 6". It costs me over 7$ at kinko's to enlarge them to 155% to give me a wingspan of 11.5" (0.5" wider than the Forgeworld model). The name he suggested was thunderc*nts lol. As far as a color scheme I'm looking at a couple of ideas from Macross.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mk II in the works. I found the full plog of his work and saw where I made some mistakes. Already this is looking better.

I'm going to pretty much use the templates of the fuselage and end up cutting the rest from scratch.
