Stercus
I have just been unpacking my painting stuff following a house move, and I found some really old GW paints. The most venerable I think are four unopened pots, (hexagonal shaped, 17.5ml, white plastic lid) of snakebite leather, bad moon yellow, mithril silver and blood red. Oh, and a half a pot of blood angel orange which looks even older. Is it worth even attempting to use these, or shall I launch them straight at the dustbin? teblin
Open them and find out, or leave them sealed in case they become antiques in a few decades :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3599953 Share on other sites
Fibonacci
It's not like they go bad. I still have some hexagon pots on my table that I use. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3599955 Share on other sites
Forté
A lot of the paints I use are still the old hexagonal GW ones. I prefer some of those to the current paints too. So long as they haven't dried up and gone hard they'll be fine after a bit of shaking. BKZer0
If they are still wet, they are good. Even if they are gelatinous. If they are moist is some way they are salvaegable. If they are salvaegable, I would add a 10-20 drops of "Golden Airbrush Medium" or other brand airbrush medium to the pot and shake them REAL REAL good. It should become paint again. The airbrush medium thins the paint without watering it down. It is essentially what the paint is made out of in the first place. Stercus
Well, I've checked them and after a good shake, even the blood angel orange is good to go. That's pretty good considering it must be getting on for twenty years old. infyrana
Some of the ones like the old school hex tub chainmail colours (metallic paints) kept/keep really well (still have mine). Others like black seem to dry out so quick. Glad you have some useable ones there, always worth checking :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3600069 Share on other sites
Shadespyre
I'm painting my Marines with Hawk Turquoise from the original Ork and Eldar Paint Set (1989 I think) and I've got a Bleached Bone, Ghoul Grey and Bronzed Flesh which are the same age or even older. I just add a few drops of water now and then and give them a good shake, as long as they never dry solid you are fine. You can also use windscreen wiper fluid (the type intended to be put in cars). I’d recommend adding a little, stirring the lot thoroughly with a flat stick, and repeating as necessary until you get the desired thickness. Psy-Crow
Emerald green, woodland green, salamander green, blue grey (both shades, they lighted it at one point), hobgoblin orange, waaagh green, worm purple, blood angel orange, hawk turquoise, firestorm yellow, orc brown, moody blue, plasma red, polished blue and a metallic purple are staring at me as i type this, all in working order. IMO the older pots are far superior, the paint last much longer. off chance, does anyone know the official name of the metallic purple? the label is covered in paint and its been bugging me Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3603552 Share on other sites

When they introduced the metallic range, they used it to paint a slaanesh chaos marine in white dwarf. I had some as a teenager, but dogs and miniature painting do not mix. I had a metallic purple blob in my carpet for years. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3603713 Share on other sites
Forté
^^^^^ yup. Amethyst Purple is right. Still have mine too. Not used it in years and I'm painting Slaanesh. Think I may need to break it out again. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/287121-really-old-paints/#findComment-3603766 Share on other sites
MagicMan
Anyone else really like the old Hexagonal Paints? The new pots to me seem to be designed to dry out. They're easy to leave slightly open by accident, the paint gunks up and dries all around the rim because its not straight up, and it does the same on the little dipper that goes into the paint. Ive thought for a while that they're designed for early death. Stercus
I liked the hexagon pots a lot. The only gripe I had with them was that the hinge was slightly on the weak side. They were a whole lot better than the screw top hex bottles that replaced them. Those stank. Psy-Crow
Good looking Stercus, I bought mine because of a Slaanesh Chaos Marine from the Eavy Metal Gallery in the 2nd edition Rulebook.
