Flint13
Afternoon guys! Starting out with my tiny dark mechanicus army, I'm coming up on a bit of a problem. For anti-air, most of my choices are sadly lacking. I've decided on grabbing a couple of FW fighters, but I can't decide between my two options. What are thoughts on the Avenger and the Lightning Fighter? I'd be using the mainly for anti-armor and anti-air work, so I'm slanting towards the Lightning. The Voss (Boss) pattern looks pretty awesome too. With the Kraken penetrators at BS5, I can't see even heavy armor living for long. But it is pretty darn expensive. With a single set of kraken missiles, and the tracking auguaries, and battle-servitor control, it comes out to 175pts for a two HP flyer. The avenger seems pretty sad by comparison. Only 10pts less when given the servitor control, with one less BS and no kraken missiles. It does gain the avenger bolt cannon and comes with "strafing run," however. Is there any reason to even consider an Avenger? And if I take a couple of Lightnings, it is worth it to pay the extra points for four Kraken, or are two and the lascannons normally sufficient w/ tank hunters? Thanks in advance for the help guys! BassWave
I will offer an alternative and say wait until mechanicus gets more stuff released. Right now their air support is meh. I'd focus on getting the robots for now. *Furyou Miko
The Avenger is a ground attack fighter. It is excellent at taking out MEqs and their vehicles. It's not supposed to compete with the Lightning Interceptor - they're designed for two different roles. You're basically asking if you should take a Messerschmitt 109 or a Stuka (Or, well, an F-22 or an A-10). If you want anti-air, you want the Lightning, or maybe the Thunderbolt if the Lightning's too fragile for your tastes. Interrogator Stobz
Or make some robotic Helios Hyperios launchers or Sabre Platforms and stay on the ground. Interrogator Stobz
Haha, It just seems fluffier to me for Mechanicum units to be on the ground. If I were to make a predominantly 'Mechanicum' army and wanted to have Naval air support (that always sounds weird) I would have an Inq or IG unit or two present to make it feel 'right'. Crawling spiders of Blanchetsi creepiness would make cool Hyperios tarantula.
