The Stormlord Rides to War! (Pics!)

So I've been looking to create a suitable command vehicle, a centerpiece for my Space Wolves army. At more than 5000 points strong when deploying for an Apocalypse game I wanted something that would really stand out. I considered a Fellblade, a Spartan or some other big forge world tank, but none of them seemed to fit. Then I looked closer at the rules for the Stormlord Super-Heavy tank. Now it's not an option using Escalation as only Guard can take it or ride in it however in Apocalypse virtually anything goes, and that is where I planned to field such a large centerpiece so I figured it would work just fine. After months of contemplation I went ahead and got the tank and spent the next several weeks tweaking and adding onto the tank. I considered getting a second set of sponsons but I wanted enough space for my four greenstuff wolf banners as I wanted this thing to really display a lot of heraldry, a lot of banners and pelts on either side of a single set of sponsons gave me a good balance between display and firepower. I was almost finished when the new Dwarfs hit the net and I saw the new slayer throwing himself from a sculpted dragon figurehead and I knew immediately that I wanted that bit on my Stormlord. After getting it this is the result:

All told I just made a few embellishments here and there. Tusks on the front taken from Ork kits, some sensor dishes and a bits bashed pintle-mounted heavy-stubber, and I cut down the communications antenna to better fit a box for transport. Some green stuff and bits wolfy icons, teeth and talismans and the runes on the side spell "Storm Lord" as I decided this isn't just A stormlord, it is THE Stormlord... at least for my Great Company. The four pelts on the side will display the Company symbol, the tank's personal heraldry (A sea-serpent/dragon rising from a Fenresian ocean I think), the Wolf Lord's personal heraldry and a campaign banner respectively.

Also no Dwarves were hurt in the making of this vehicle:

As some added stuff the last couple models for my army are awaiting priming:

An addition to my Blood Angels allied detachment representing a Wolf Priest and Wulfen I have added a Furioso Dreadnought to be carried by the same Stormraven Gunship as the Wulfen Death Company. I cut down one of the magna-grapples and placed it within the fist of his DCCW because I didn't want the big back-mounted thing (Let Scorpion "Come over here!" jokes commence).

Lastly a new Wolf Guard Battle Leader to join my Skyclaws. The idea for this guy largely came from the sword he wields which is the power sword from the new Ravenwing Command Squad/Black Knight kit that bears Dark Angels iconography and says "Wrath of Caliban" along the blade. I love poking fun at Dark Angels, my Wolf Lord has a DA helmet on his base and when a friend gave me this bit I just had to model it as a weapon in my army, a relic taken from a victorious duel and carried as an eternal insult to the Unforgiven! Rules wise it's simply either a power sword or a frost blade.

So whatcha guys think? Lemme know!

It's all brilliant and I think your logic is very consistent. The banner work is also a very nice touch and I like how you modeled the pelts. I'll have to borrow that sometime as well.

Two things:

1. I know it's cool looking, which is a good enough reason, but Squats are mutants. Do you think the Wolves would grace one of their greatest chapter relics with a mutant on the top?

2. So I am intrigued by the "stormlord" letters on the side. How exactly are you going to paint those up? For some reason, the first thing that came to my mind is that they look a bit like some of those Nurgle pustules those guys are so fond of.

Cheers,

Lemme see if I can do my best product description speak: "Stunty shown only for comparative and illustrative purposes, model not fielded alongside super-awesome tank."

Cheers,

They will be painted as stone like on this tank:

Let Scorpion "Come over here!" jokes commence).

The line is actually "Get over here".

Good looking tank and dreadnought conversions Vash, the serpent from the new slayer kit in particular is a nice touch- like Jormungandr rising from the depths to devour armies whole.

Quick question though, are you going to remove the blood angels chalice on the dreadnought? I can't help but think it clashes with the wold motif a bit.

As Imperialis_Dominatus suggested I left it as a representation of the Cup of the Wulfen, to represent the fact that this dread will be subject to the Blood Angels rules and is part of an ally group representing Wulfen. In Space Wolves fluff initiates all are required to drink from the ritual Cup of the Wulfen filled with (at least in part if I recall correctly) the blood of a Wolf Priest which imparts the Canis Helix, the first part of the Space Wolves gene-seed, to the recruits.

What does the Cup of the Wulfen look like? Could be that.

That's an interesting symbol on the Crusader Hurricane sponson. What does it represent? Your Great Company badge?

The symbol is actually a representation of Exterminatus being performed on a world where the Land Raider was fighting, a symbolic representation of that action. The Great Company symbol for my army can be seen in this following picture of the Land Raider's other side on the left of the picture:

A lightning bladed sword laid over a horizontal crescent moon with a single star in the upper right corner.

Each vehicle I paint has it's own heraldry, for that Land Raider it's the howling wolf depicted on the wolf pelt banner seen in the first picture. All my Rhinos, my Stormraven and Land Raiders, and the Stormlord when I'm finished, all have their own icons as well as the GC symbol. I also occasionally add other symbols representing past battles, campaign badges and so on and my Wolf Lord has his own personal heraldry in addition to the Great Company badge seen here:

It's a representation of the Blood Moon, an idea I took from the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to represent a time of turbulence and bloodshed on Fenris.

As far as the dwarf/squat goes.. The wolves are based on Norse culture, and in Norse mythology the dwarves made all of the Aesir's artifacts (Mjolnir, Megingjard, Brisingamen, etc). I can totally see the wolves having squats hidden in the background making their wargear so they don't have to kowtow to the mechanicus, rebellious chapter that they are and all that.
