Considering returning to the Wolves..

So, I have a few armies but none of them where realy super huge, And I kept changing between them and buying for all of them and my friends kept bugging me to focus on one army and finaly, I decided that I could not buy anything for any other army untill I had 3000 points of Necrons. Now I'm almost there and while I was planning to start a Eldar army once I hit 3000 on my Necrons, I'v been feeling like playing an Imperial army again. And my only imperial army is Space Wolves..

I remember I got a bit bored with Space Wolves cus I endd up using the same stuff every single match. A Rune Priest, 3 groups of Grey Hunters with 2 Meltas and Mark of the Wulfen (Love the mark on grey hunters) 1 or 2 groups of Longfangs (If 1 group then 5 missile launchers, If 2 groups then 3 Missile Launchers and 2 Lascannons per group) And 1 group of Thunderwolves. And thats basically all I used on the Space Wolves, Sometimes I would use Njal Stormcaller, Or have a Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor in each group of Grey Hunters and Longfangs.. But I got bored of running the same things all the time..

So! What other units could I use to mix it up a bit? What other things are good? Is the Wolf Lord good? How should I equip him? What about scouts? They seem a bit costly for being scouts and not being troops.. Swiftclaws and Skyclaws? Are they good? They are more expensive then the vanilla marine ones, But at the same time they seem a bit weaker with their lower weapon skill and ballistic skill.. But they have twice as many attacks right? So they are better at Assaulting..? Maybe..? How should I equip them? Give them Wolf Priests? What about Land Speeders and Fenrisian Wolf Packs?

There are many good builds that you could try, here are a few:

Beasts

-Wolf Lord/Canis Wolfborn on Thunderwolf, Thunderwolf Cavalry, backed up by Fenresian Wolf Packs with rhino mounted Grey Hunters and other mobile units in support. This is a fast moving, hard hitting army, Thunderwolf Cavalry and Characters on Thunderwolves are extremely tough, hard hitting units and the Fenresian Wolves add ablative wounds to help ensure they reach combat intact enough to succeed. Scatter some Storm Shields amongst the Cavalry and take a Storm Shield, Runic Armor and Saga of the Bear on your Thunderlord and you've got a force that is incredibly difficult to destroy.

Bikes

-Swiftclaws, Wolf Guard and Characters on bikes. Taken in large squadrons and again backed up by Grey Hunters in Rhinos or Razorbacks and this makes for a similarly hard hitting and even faster force than the beasts, capable of rapidly encircling and destroying an enemy army. Bikes are awesome in 6th Edition, fast, tough and effective and while Swiftclaws may not have the WS or BS of full marines Wolf Guard on bikes can be very versatile in their equipment and tough to take down.

Drop Pods

-Grey Hunters and Long Fangs in massed Drop Pods is an excellent and very effective tactic. Bringing lots of bolters, special weapons and/or heavy weapons into range quickly and en-mass with solid cc-defense capabilities, particularly coupled with overwatch shooting makes for a devastating attack. Back that up with some Terminators and/or Wolf Guard ready to lead an assault and Rune Priests, especially Njal, can act as great force multipliers in a drop assault. Stormcaller's abilities can really cause trouble when dropped right into the heart of the enemy and Drop Pods can be used extremely aggressively. You can literally place them on enemy units and they scatter the minimum safe distance rather than mishap and if you want to delay an arrival placing the pod in the very edge of the board and purposefully scattering off the table puts the pod back into reserve to arrive next turn with only a 1/6 chance of being lost, allowing you to control when and how your forces arrive should you wish.

Tank Assault

-Land Raiders are great in my experience, even with the decreased survivability of tanks in 6th Edition the AV14 of Land Raiders can be very hard for enemies to deal with, especially if they are more focused dealing with lighter armored threats like the Duke or Screamerstar, etc. Filled out with Grey Hunters, lots of Blood Claws or Wolf Guard you can take as many as 4 of these (3 in Heavy Support, 1 as a Wolf Guard dedicated transport) in up to 2000 points and at 2000 you can take 8 of them if you so wish. Backed up by Land Speeders, Dreadnoughts or other units this can make for a tough, mobile, and very hard hitting force. Alternatively a lighter force of Rhino/Razorback mounted troops backed by Vindicators and Predators can also make for a highly destructive bit of tread-head fun.

Allies

-Allies opens up a ton of interesting options, one of the most common is Imperial Guard allies. A Valkyrie or Vendetta Squadron can make for an extremely destructive bit of air-power to back up your forces, a squadron of Leman Russ tanks can also be a fearsome proposition, with front armor 14 and side armor 13 the Leman Russ can mount a variety of incredibly fearsome firepower including my favorite, the Executioner, which when armed with plasma cannon sponsons can put out a devastating 5 plasma cannon blasts a turn. Artillery is also a great option, the humble Basilisk or more specialized artillery such as the mighty str 10 ap 1 Medusa or the str 6 ap 3 Colossus which denies cover saves and can make enemy marines cry. Alternately taking other Space Marine allies opens up a host of other options including the use of the Stormraven and/or Stormtalon gunships, Ironclad Dreadnoughts, Baal Predators, special characters and all kinds of other things not normally available to the Space Wolves. I use Blood Angels rules to represent a unit of Wulfen salvaged from my old 13th Company force, 10 Death Company mounted in a Stormraven, led by a Chaplain modeled as a Wolf Priest and backed by a Furioso Dreadnought. The entire force arrives mounted in the Stormraven and provides both air cover and devastating cc capability and I just love the Furioso's frag cannon, so fun.

Those are just a few suggestions but are by no means the limit to what you can do with your own force and with allies!

The problem I see with Wolf Guard on Bikes is, Ouch they are expensive! Sure you'd only take one per bike group but still, Ouch.. XD Hmm.. And the biggest problem I have with Thunder Wolves is that they are costly, Aspecialy if you add Storm Shields, But they do deal massive damage when they get into close combat.. I would like a mixed force.. Maybe a group of Thunder Wolves with Wolf Lord, A group of Swiftclaws with Wolf Guard and Wolf Priest, And a group of Fenrisian wolves..?

Ah yes.. What models do I have? *checks* I have

5 ThunderWolves
3 Rhino
1 Land Raider
2 Rifleman Dreadnoughts
30 Grey Hunters (Atleast 4 Meltas)
5 Wulfen
6 Missile Longfangs
4 Lascannon Longfangs
2 Longfang leaders
10 Scouts (2 with Melta)
6 Wolf Guard Terminators
Arjac Rockfist
Logan Grimnar
Ragnar Blackmane
Njal Stormcaller
Canis Wolfborn
2 Rune Priests
1 Wolf Priest

I'm not quite sure how many points it is but I think I can make a legal list of arround 2000 points.. I would like to get it up to 3000 like my necrons.. Oh yeah! I also got one box of un assembled Grey Hunters (Well, Two of the models are assembled.)

Well you have the makings of a nicely mobile army there with the Land Raider, Rhinos, Dreadnoughts and Thunderwolves.

A couple Predators or Vindicators could help but I'd particularly suggest getting a Land Raider Crusader, assemble your 4th Grey Hunter Pack and mount them in the Land Raider and take Logan Grimnar and Njal along with the 6 Terminators and mount them in the Crusader. That way you have 5 mechanized troops choices and back them with the Dreadnoughts and Thunderwolves and I think that would be a viable and effective army on it's own. Long Fangs or infiltrating Scouts can also be effective additions from the rest of your roster.

Ehehe,.. I just had a silly idea to mess with the opponent.. A Max unit of Thunderwolf Cavalry, With 4 Wolf Lords on Thunder Wolves in the unit.. XD Would have been fun and awesome.. But oh so expensive, Aspecialy after upgrading all four thunderlords..

Just counted at it.. XD
